How Can I apply the old 3D border in Snagit Editor?

I still miss a feature that disappeared with the new gui. In Ver 8 or so - you could apply a very narrow border in the editor and then apply a 3D effect to it. This raised just the border and made it look 3D.

You can still do this but only as you capture. If you go to Options | Border and select the 3D effect, it applies that type of border. BUT - very often I don't get a regional capture quite right and have to crop it. So I want to be able to apply that 3D border after doing a bunch of other stuff.
(This is NOT the Bevel effect, which is much more limited.)

PLEASE can we have that old feature back again.

  • Hello,

That option really wasn't a feature by itself. It was actually just a preset we made from the Beveled Edge effects.

Here is how you can create the same effect in about 10 seconds or less and add it to the Quick Styles gallery for easy use whenever you need it.

    Thanks for using Snagit!

    Hi Kelly,
Thanks for trying to solve this. I wish your solution worked, but unfortunately, it doesn't.
The old tool - and it was a tool not a preset, as it had options and still does in the capture border tool - you could resize the width of the border easily. When you try to do this with your bevel solution - it looks like a bevel and not a border at all.
If you zoom right in on the corners of the attached graphic, you will see that the border created using the Bevel is not anything like the 3D Border that the border capture tool creates.
    Sue.

  • Hello,
I see now... I thought you were upgrading from version 9 or 10. You must have been using version 7 or 8.

So yes... that border option was removed and replaced with the ability to add the current borders and edge effects.

I guess my only suggestion / workaround for this would be to:
    1. Take your capture.
    2. Edit as needed in Editor.
    3. Setup a profile in Snagit that has the border you want and set it to save the file. Disable the View in Editor option. Apply a hotkey to it then save.
    4. Go into Tools > Program Preferences > Program Options and uncheck the Hide Snagit before capturing option.
    5. Re-capture your image in the Editor window using your profile hotkey. Snagit will apply the border you need and save it for you.

Sorry.. this is the best I can come up with for you.
Perhaps you could begin moving your new captures over to the new Snagit look?

I hope this helps in some way!

    Hi Kelly,
Thanks again for trying. My hope is that you will be able to put the feature back into the editor soon :). It really is a one I used for almost every screenshot.

I actually upgraded a long time ago, but I have continued to miss that border!
Your procedure would take too long to do to every screen shot when I take upwards of 30-40 a day.
But thank you so much for trying to help.
If you get a chance, maybe you could ask for this feature to be returned.
