Camtasia 8: noise reduction tools do not seem to work ... I've attempted to apply the noise reduction, adjusting sensitivity and yet I don't hear any reduction of the noise level. In Camtasia 7, I hear the noise reduction very clearly.
... Is this a known bug?
I am using Win 7 home premium on a Samsung series 9 ultra book.

Quick update:
I've been looking into this issue more today and there is a confirmed bug with Noise Removal in CS8. The internal parameters used to apply the noise reduction aren't treated the same way as they were in CS7, so that's causing the noise removal to not have as much of an effect.
We're fixing it right now, and it will be included in our next maintenance release. Sorry again for all the trouble.

With the render engine rewrite, we changed the noise reduction components a little. They are a little more subtle in CS8 and you may have to adjust the parameters a little bit to get a good result.
Also, in CS7, when you turned noise reduction on, by default it would automatically search the clip for a good spot to do noise training. That process could take a long time depending on what you were training on. The default now is to do training on the first second of audio when you enable noise reduction. If you want auto-training, you will have to actually click the auto training button. Or you can manually select a range to train on. If auto/manual training and adjusting the parameters still produces no noticeable effect, it may be a bug that support should take a look at.

Oopps, I should mention that the color change on the timeline does NOT seem to take place unless I restart camtasia with the same project.
... But even when it does turn orange, the noise reduction is not there.

... I am guessing as you slide the slider right more and more noise is removed. Regardless, the functionality is not as clear as it was in previous versions.

That's correct, moving the slider to the right should increase the amount of noise removed. However, using a sample clip with a lot of noise, I was able to confirm that we aren't removing as much as we should. It does have an effect, but it's not quite right. We may have a bug there that needs to be addressed in a maintenance release.

Randy I can also verify that there is not to much of a difference with the noise reduction. I tried and tested this myself this morning and it did not perform as expected compared to CS 7. Can you keep us informed on this and I hope this helps to verify maybe a small bug in that section of the application. Have a great day and keep up the great work!

It will be a little while. We have a maintenance release in the works, but development has ended for that already. There likely will be another one following that, and I think that would be the candidate for this issue.
Just a thought. I played with my sample clip a little bit, and you may get better results doing manual noise training.
I zoomed in on the timeline as far I could go and then selected a 10-frame segment of really quiet audio. That made a noticeable difference in the amount of noise removed. You may get an error message if the segment is too short, just bump it up until you don't get an error any more.
Ultimately, we need to make it a little easier, but I think if you fiddle with it manually, you should be able to find a reasonable amount of noise reduction.

I always use noise reduction to kill any background noise on my vocals, and I often use manual detection. It was super quick in v7 and yielded great results, however in v8 it often feels like there is no noise reduction happening and trying to do manual reduction doesn't really work as fluently. I usually pick a small area of background noise and cancel it, now it requires me to pick 5 seconds, which I rarely have 5 seconds of silence to choose from.
I also do not see the coursor progress across my manual selection when I choose it, in v7 when you use noise reduction based on a manual section, it will actually show the progress of analysis on the timeline.
Audio is one of the main things I edit in camtasia along with videos, and quite a few of the changes, both major and minor, are making me not even use v8 as things were much more fluid in v7. This issue, along with not being able to highlight and adjust the timeline by dragging, as well as the change in waveform display have made v8 feel quite clunky in terms of editing audio compared to 7.
Maybe I'm missing something with the noise reduction option that has changed in v8 but as of now I do not find it to be working as well as v7.

Hi,
I have a related question. I am using Camtasia 7, and when I apply manual noise reduction the sampled noise is removed, but 'blobs' of a gurgling sound emerge. I tried different sensitivity levels, but that seems unrelated.
And another question, a high pitch (chipmunk?) is added to the recorded voice that is not there in the original mp3. I noticed the issue was discussed for wav and flv, but is there a solution for mp3, too?

Also, in version 8, is it possible to apply different noise reduction to different clips? i.e. In 7 the sample noise that was used would automatically be applied to the whole project. Is it possible to now have it apply to only 1 track?

That's amazing. Thanks Randy. In 7, the noise removal feature worked really well (I actually found it more efficient to work with than Soundbooth).

Is the maintenance release ready? I am trying to do very obvious noise removal and it is not having any effect whatsoever. I selected a portion of the clip that only has a very loud buzzing and when I click "manual noise training" nothing happens.
It used to work very well in v7 . . . -

Yeah and the fact that we are forced to choose 5 seconds for manual detection really bothers me. In 7, I would just select a small snippet of silence and it would work flawlessly.

Hi everybody,
Version 8.0.2 addresses the issue with noise reduction not having much of an effect. We missed setting some internal parameters that CS7 used, so sorry about that !
As for the 5 second thing, you are not required to choose exactly 5 seconds. The message that pops up there is a little misleading. What is actually happening is that the noise reduction engine we use is returning an error when it tries to generate a profile for the audio you had selected.
We have seen this internally with certain files or certain sections of particular files. But, since we use third-party software for noise reduction, we will have to take it up with them to see if there is a bug that needs to be fixed.
In the meantime, just know that 5 seconds is not a requirement, it is the *maximum* length. Try training on a different segment, or slightly longer or shorter than you were using and it should work.

I have the Version 8.0.2 and I still have problems with the Noise Audio Reduction. Are you still working around fixing it?
Example:
I have 2 camrecs, 1 of them with backstage noise.
When I apply the noise reduction, both of the camrec's sound like inside of a box, with crappy sound too. I try to undo, and don't do nothing, only closing and reopen the project without saving it. -

Hello, will CS8 be able to apply noise removal to an entire project using a sample file? In 7 I used to just record silence in the room I was in for a couple seconds. I would then apply that noise profile and it would in turn apply it to the entire project, which worked amazingly. It would be awesome if this could be brought back in 8.

Hello guys. I had the same problem with applying the noise removal tool on my audio - it seem to have no effect at all. Then i tried to use this tool not to the track with (System Audio) header, but to another track with (Screen) header and it worked excellent! It's unlogical, but try it and maybe this will help you.
