Good news!
We published a maintenance release this morning that should address this crash for all of you. I thought it wasn't going to be until next week, but our awesome Web Presence staff did us a favor :-).
You can get the build here:
http://www.techsmith.com/download/cam...
If this build does NOT fix the issue and you still see a 0xc0000005 or 0xc0000142 error trying to run Recorder, please get in touch with our support department.
Thanks for your patience with this issue, hopefully you can now enjoy the full product.

Chris are you getting 000142 error messages when trying to play a recording or are you getting a different error?
The gist of this discussion thread is that several people are getting the x000142 error message when trying to record the screen. We are not getting crash dumps when trying to record the screen, just an error message.
Can you record your screen (make a recording) with Camtasia 8? -
-
Hello everyone,
My bad on the .NET installer. I was hoping to give you a way to resolve the issue while we continue to investigate it. But I forgot it won't run on Win7. We're getting close to a solution for the recorder crash (needs some testing). So, thank you for being patient with us.
About the search toolbar solution:
What's happening here is that these third-party applications inject themselves into every application that starts, and due to the fact that we are a 32-bit mixed-mode .NET application, that injection causes some problems. It's not only search toolbars that cause the issue. The Acrobat 3D capture application also does it. We had a user in support that was able to solve the problem by uninstalling that application. That's not a viable long-term solution, but I noticed one of you (Larry?) mentioned it.
I'll be back soon with another update.

I also get an error running the Recorder, 0xc0000005, on a Vista 64 Business workstation. It crashes, I click on the window to "look for a solution & close", then the recorder finally closes from the screen. I do find that the Recorder is still running in "Processes" in Task Manager. Once I end the process, the Recorder will run again, only to crash again when stopping the recording.

Yes hello TechSmith I would like to report that the Camtasia Studio 8 recorder does not work whenever I start it up it says ''Camtasia recorder has stopped working'' while Camtasia Studio is working fine.

Hello everyone,
I have had similar problems with the recorder and have found a solution of my PC.
I have adobe acrobat pro extended installed on my PC and the conflict is with a dll file called acaptuser32.dll located in the system folder.
I run win 7 x64 and this is a very easy fix:
1. go to C:\Windows\SysWOW64
2. locate the acaptuser32.dll
3. make a new folder to move this dll temporarily into
4. launch the recorder and done.
5. once you are complete, move the dll back into SysWOW64 so that acrobat can work appropriately.
Hope this can help a majority of individuals.-
But everytime you need to capture have to do this?

unfortunately, thats how it works for me right now.. maybe there will be an update later on, but its a quick fix

@samhaywood or @alex: I'm not sure why this thread was merged here. This sounds like a separate problem than the one in this thread. Please contact our TechSupport staff by submitting a question at http://support.techsmith.com and someone will follow up with you by email to help troubleshoot further. Thanks.

Taner you are the man!!
Success!!
That was brilliant work.
There were hints that acrobat pro extended may be involved but no one came up with your solution.
I just renamed acaptuser32.dll, AAAacaptuser32.dll and had success.
Thanks for your solution. -
-
I looked at Taner Tunca's solution and it didn't work for me, as I don't have that Adobe program or the "acaptuser32.dll".
Mike at TechSmith asked me to uninstall the DivX program. That's what worked for me, though any "*.MKV" movies no longer work.
Hopefully they will come up with a real fix that doesn't involve breaking other programs; i.e. Adobe products or DivX. -
-
Big day today.
Just installed new update from Techsmith 10 minutes ago and it works!!!
Renamed AAAacaptuser32.dll file back to acaptuser32.dll. Installed new update and all is working.
A big thanks to all those who must have worked hard on this issue. -
-
Thank you Taner for the solution. How did you isolate the problem? Very good detective work.
So there is an update from Techsmith? Where can it be found? Many thanks to all who worked on the problem!!!
Larry-
well i have had previous trouble with adobe products creating conflicts with other apps and the same error has popped up before, so I gave it a try, and it worked, I forgot how I originally figured out the solution, but im sure it was a mix of both trial and error and research
-
-
Taner that is brilliant.
It is becomnig a mindfield out there. It is going back to the crazy days when every programmer dumped on everyone's program. Keep up the good work. -

New update does not work for me. It's still not working. and I have the latest version. I'm getting a little sick of this... -_-

SHeldon and Shaya have you done a search in your /windows/system32 directory for the file acaptuser32.dll?
This is one major solution to the 0cx0000142 error.
Larry you may need to open an issue with tech support in order to get the update. -
-
Downloaded the latest update - no difference - the screen recorder does not work

Hi all,
The new update (8.0.1) is not intended to address this issue. It was completed and pushed into a release cycle over a week ago. We are doing final testing right now on a build that should fix this issue for all of you. If everything goes well, expect to see it early next week. I will post an update when it's live to make sure everyone knows about it.

I have been having these problems, but you all have my Camtasia working via a support ticket. I look forward to a permanent fix. But I have to say, TechSmith has been the most responsive to my issues compared to other software companies. I'm a user of many high-end software and none of the other companies communicate through crisis as well as TechSmith. Thanks for your accessibility and communications.

-
I have checked my installed applications that might be preventing Camtasia studio from running on my computer. So far none of the applications that was identified by the technical support link is installed on my PC.
Note: I have a windows 7.
So how do I get this issue resolved?

I gather that you're not publishing a patch, but requiring users to download the complete set of installation files again (242MB).
Uninstall the old Camtasia 8, then install this new build?
I sure hope this works.
No such luck. :-((

Yes, it's an updated installer. I wasn't directly involved with this fix, so I'm guessing a bit here, but my hunch is that was the quickest way to get it out there. There's no need to uninstall, it will install over existing versions of CS 8.
Thanks for the extra info. Based on that and your earlier post, it looks like the crash is due to a different issue than what others were seeing. That DirectShowDemuxFilter.dll isn't part of our install, it's a DivX demuxer filter. It sounds like you've already talked with Mike in our tech support department. I would recommend you get in touch with him to diagnose it further. -
-
Hi Kevin, Dro,
I filed a report with DivX and notified Mike. Hopefully they can figure out what's wrong with your program and fix it so I can have both programs available.

I just installed the 8.01 update and it fixed the problem for me. Win 7 Pro 64 bit (4 core i7 Ivy Bridge). "Check for Update" wasn't showing an update, so I'm happy I found this discussion (through Google).

Hi,
Just raised a question for TechSupport, because even after install the version 8.0.1 I got the same error when I start recording the screen. As soon as TechSupport answers my ticket, I let you know. -

When I click on "Record the Screen" in Cam 8, it is displaying "The application was unable to start correctly (0x0000142) Click OK to close the application.

Hi Jben, TechSupport answered me last week. The issue in my case was related to Record System Audio option. I unchecked this option and the problem is over. Also, the issue is related to the microphone driver, if you have a microphone driver that's not working properly you can get the same issue.

Okay, so I click on the link for the 'new build' and get taken to the download page. Is that how you get a 'new build?' What am I missing here?
-
Okay, so it was a little too early for me to tackle this problem. This whole issue (camrecorder.exe - code 0xc0000142 - application unable to start correctly...) was resolved by a simple update!
Opened my Camtasia 8 program > Help > Check for Updates > located 8.02 release > downloaded > installed > and so far, no problems at this time.

I am having the same issue: on Windows 8, using the latest version (8.0.4) when starting the recorder as recording starts the application crashes because of an unhandled exception.
The details of the exception are:
Unhandled exception at 0x66A9A2B5 (TSCRec3.dll) in CamRecorder.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x0FF81058.
Call stack is:
TSCRec3.dll!66a9a2b5()
TSCRec3.dll!66a985d4()
kernel32.dll!75498543()
ntdll.dll!77c4ac69()
ntdll.dll!77c4ac3c()
Please could you let me know if this issue is being tracked and can be expected to be resolved.-
This is a great conversation that's separate from the main topic, so I created a new topic to continue the discussion. Please reference the new topic here: Camtasia Recorder crash after clicking record button
