Exactly. I suppose you could crank up the system sound loud enough so that the mic picks it up, but this is a rather crappy, low-quality solution.

Hmmm... that's just odd.
On another note AirServer just gave us their app so I am going to check it out compared to Reflection.

I like Reflection except I am experiencing a lot of snap, crackle and pop when the app has continuous background music.

We'll see how AirServer stacks up!

Just realized that AirServer for PC is still in beta so it does not yet support sound. We have a copy of it and will continue to follow it's progress as the promised updates are rolled out.

Okay... I just bought and downloaded the Display Recorder app and made this video on my iPad. It not only recorded the sound of the app it very ably recorded my voiceover too. Not studio quality but I wasn't in a studio. I might try a mic next time! In the meantime I think it did a very good job... see for yourself: http://youtu.be/JKVkMDW1p9Q

Carlos, so if I got that right you are recording your voiceover on your PC while you walk through the app, recording it on the iPad with Display Recorder? Interesting.
What program and mic are you using if I might ask?

I just use the iPad mic for my voiceover and then clean it up in Camtasia. It actually does a good job but I'll have to dig out my USB mic and try it your way too.... always looking to make it better.

FYI AirServer is expected to have audio in the PC version by the end of the month! Then we'll have yet another option!

Hi MaggieB, there is no problem, you can use any audio program in your PC, I use Camtasia to record my voice, but there are many apps that can do that (audacity, audition, wavelab, sound forge, etc.), I use the Display Recorder app for Cydia on my iPad, also on my iPhone.

Then I do this:
1.- I copy the video that I recorded from my iPad to my PC, using an iPad/iPhone/iPod explorer called iExplorer: http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/ is free.
2. In Camtasia start a new empty project, import the video and audio to the timeline, then sync them, you can edit any portion of your project as usual, add callouts, captions, etc. like the videos you saw, I use a video for my animated logo at the bottom right.

Other things:
-In Camtasia I have a custom preset for my iPad recordings, 1024 x 768 pixels the screen resolution for iPad 1 and 2., mp4 80% quality, no controls, 192kbs audio, 24fps,

-In Display Recorder I locked the framerate about 20fps (I think is in the half of the slider), landscape right, h.264, video quality high, opengl off, grayscale off, scale full, show taps when recording, tap size small.

-I have a USB mic, Rode Podcaster (US$ 229)

-I enhanced the audio with Adobe Audition, using a VST plugin called "Izotope Ozone", (select produce special from file menu in camtasia, and then export audio as wav for better quality)

Thanks for the explanation. I hadn't heard of macroplant so I'll have to go read up on that. I hate using iTunes to transfer stuff to my PC.

The only thing I can't envision is how you start your Camtasia recorder AND start the Display Recorder so that you get them to sync. How do you get your voiceover to match exactly where it belongs on the DisplayRecorder video? On my videos if its even a little bit off its going to look like something is lagging. So how do you do that so your voiceover matches what's displayed on the screen once you have both in Camtasia?

I have made note of how you do your recordings so I can refer back to them.

It is not easy for me explain it in English, but I'll try it.

What I do is to start recording the audio about 2-3 seconds before starting to record the video, then, I speak after that time...the final audio track is bigger than the video track, in seconds, 2-3.

Just before I start to record my voice, I touch my iPad twice (on blank space), Display Recorder shows "two taps" in the recorded video (the little gray circles), those circles are my guide.

In Camtasia I look for the first double tap in my video and my first word I said in the audio track, you can sync them using this “trick”. You need to move the video track a few seconds, the first seconds of silence in the audio track.

Otherwise you can, for example, use the movement in your recorded video, suppose you said in your video "click the Camera app icon ...", in the recorded video the app opens, there is a movement when opens, you can look for it, then move the audio track when you said those words and sync them, the whole audio track is sync.

It's a bit difficult, but I think the end result worth it.

I downloaded and installed iExplorer and it opens up a a box with the files on my iPad, BUT how do I find the DisplayRecorder files in this list that isn't in any sort of order?

Could you briefly explain how you use that to transfer files to your PC?

Hi Maggie,

Movies are stored in this folder var/mobile/Library/Keyboard/DisplayRecorder.

Just drag and drop your video files from iExplorer to your PC desktop or folder in Windows Explorer, Finder in Mac.

Can anyone teach me that how to capture iPad screen?
I have just started using iPad & having some urgent work to capture the video of the iPad screen when I am working on it.
Plz help me out.

All you need to do is get the Reflections or AirServer software set up on your PC or Mac. Have your computer and iPad on the same wi-fi & you should be able to go onto the iPad, double-tap your home button to reveal your multi-task bar, and then swipe ALL the way to the left to reveal your AirPlay button.

From there all you do is tap on that button and select your computer to stream to. As you work on your iPad you'll see what is happening mirrored to your computer. Your iPad screen will now show up on your computer monitor. Use Camtasia or another screen-capturing software to record the area of your computer screen that contains the iPad.

@Joe...are you using WIndows? If so, you can use a software called Reflections which works great. For Mac, you can use Reflections or AirServer to capture the screen. They are both $15.

I'm able to capture it without a problem. When I import it into Camtasia it looks crystal clear. But when I export it to YouTube or Screencast it becomes very fuzzy. I think I've tried practically every permutation possible of resolutions.

I work at a University where we have loads of iPad's. Staff and Students have been asking if there is a version of Camtasia which will work on an iPad , if not are TechSmith thinking about this.

This would be a big coup' if they ( TS ) did.

They don't, sadly. "Coach's Eye" promised to be, but Techsmith fans complained that they wanted full control over the video they creat with it, and Techsmith had some restrictions on the app's use.

I use Explain Everything in the classroom. Not a great app, but useful enough and easy for students to learn.

Great video Helen. I've wondered why people have been screaming for Camtasia for the iPad when it is so easy to do with the apps you reviewed. One of the limitations an iPad would have is drive space. If you start recording HD video on your iPad for a screen capture, how long before you're going to run out of drive space? With the Reflector/Air Server method, the video gets saved on the host device which will almost always have more space.
