How do I copy and paste a pan and zoom from one track to another in Camtasia Studio 8?
I have done this for a long time in v7 for split tracks to retain its current pan and zoom position when a clip continues into the next cut clip. For example I split the video, apply a faster clip speed with pan and zoom, then copy that pan and zoom to the nexp clip which is at normal speed, this way the pan and zoom keeps its position and zoom level?
Thankyou.

1Hi Daniel,
As you may have noticed, the timeline was completely rewritten, which meant we had to start from scratch on the existing features. Unfortunately, copy/paste on Zoom/Pan keyframes fell off the bottom of the list and didn't get re-implemented.
I'm very sorry about that.
As a workaround, if you just want to continue a zoom across splits, you could group the two clips and then apply the keyframe to the group. That will apply the zoom at a higher level that will be maintained across clip boundaries.

I hope the current product manager gets fired - to sign off on these changes and remove features without consideration of the needs of the users is a very fast way to destroy customer loyalty.
Up until now, Techsmith had very loyal customers. This loyalty is now being very severely tested - how quickly and effectively you are able to rectify this will determine the fate of this otherwise brilliant product. Right now it is effectively useless and I regret upgrading to v8 - it has already cost me a huge amount of time and frustration and is impacting on my clients too. -
I was sure I was doing something wrong when I couldn't figure out how to copy and paste the zoom in v8. This is such a basic efficiency/productivity feature that I didn't presume for an instant that this feature had been removed--I only thought that I didn't know how to do it.
How did something as simple as "copy and paste" of such a key feature ever get dropped from the list? -
I found the suggested fix inadequate. Not only did this not apply the zoom across each clip, when I ungrouped the clips, it caused the focus to go completely random - scattering the zoom and screen position of each and every clip. The copy and paste was a simple and effective method. Whatever this group/ungroup suggestion is I won't be using it in the future. Not my first problem with v8, hardly expect it to be my last. May recommend my company moves away from techsmith products if this the quality we can expect in the future. Work fast, 50-100 licenses here.

Being able to have the exact same zoom and pan from one clip to another is CRUCIAL.
I routinely shoot the video long so I can make multiple cuts instead of extend frames...it gives me more room to adjust things quickly.
I need to be able to add and adjust my zoom and pan both before and after such cuts.
This alone is enough to tempt me to revert to Camtasia 7, despite liking a lot of other features...
It's simply crashing my productivity...causing a snafu with my work and my boss. -
I hate to say it, but I am getting ready to uninstall Camtasia 8 and return to version 7.
There are just too many "updates" that have made my usual workflow uh, unworkable.
In less than an hour, here's what I've found.
1. No ability to copy/paste zoom/pan keyframes. HUH?!
2. No ability to copy/paste transitions. Double-HUH?!
3. No ability to move all audio clips (you used to be able to SHIFT+drag to move all clips at once - now it's a one-by-one operation?! Ridiculous.
4. Having to select clips to apply transitions? Why can't you add a transition when the playhead is on a cut, which is of course the actual location for a transition.
Hopefully I'm just missing something and all of these features are there, just undiscoverable.

How do I copy / paste zoom/pan keyframes and transitions?. -
In camtasia 7 I could select a zoom key, copy and then paste it to another part of the timeline to match the zoom level. This was especially useful after some kind of cut. However, if I select a keyframe in 8 and copy I copy the whole section of the timeline and not the keyframe.
I have manged to match zoom levels by manually inputting the information from one zoom to the next clip but that is really long winded.
Please would you give us back the ability to copy and paste zoom keys.
Thanks

Very difficult to copy and paste zooms to match footage. -
I won't be upgrading to Camtasia 8 until this feature is restored.
-
I use manually inserted zoom-n-pan markers alot, and in version 7, it was easy to copy and paste them between clips - with settings intact.
In version 8, it seems that this isn't possible anymore - forcing me to having to manually create each zoom-n-paan marker, inserting it to each clip. This is a big drawback from my point of view!
I also dislike that zoom-n-pan markers cannot be placed on a separate track as in previous versions. It just feels unnecessary having to open or close animation windows all the time. If left open, the track annoyingly overlaps the track above.
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Is it not possible to copy / paste zoom-n-pan markers?. -
One feature I really liked, which seems to be missing in version 8, is the ability to copy and paste the zoom marker on the time line.
I often split up frames, and when I zoom one, I want a seamless transition to the next frame. If the zoom in not exactly the same on both frames you can see a slight jolt in the video. So, in Camtasia 7, I would right click the little blue ball on the timeline and hit copy, then go to the beginning of the next frame and hit paste, and it would put the zoom at the exact position.
But with Camtasia 8, I right click on the blue zoom ball, but there is no option to copy. So I have to try to manually put it at the exact position, but I can never get it just right.
Please bring back this feature.
P.S. Camtasia 8 is awesome
Thanks!

Yes, this HAS to be put back in. There has to be an easy way to get the same zoom and pan setting from shot to shot. Big step backward here IMO

This missing functionality is slowing me down big time!

Another voice added to the "WTH" how can you take away such basic functionality.
A number of the changes I'm noticing using Camtasia8 look pretty, and I bet they demonstrate really well in the sales environment, but when you're actually using the product and trying to tweak things in detail they are frustrating and slower than before. -

Adding my vote to fixing the copy/paste with zoom. It's excruciating to edit videos without it.
Please prioritize this fix above everything else. Seriously. -
-
Add me to this list! It's been a little while since I upgraded from 7 to 8 and just now trying a new project in 8 and couldn't figure out why I can't copy and paste a zoom-n-pan...sucks!
FIX ASAP!
Oh- on the firing of the manager...I second that! How can you remove copy and paste functionalities these days?? -
-
I have recommended Camtasia Studio to all my clients that have a need for screen capture. I get them to buy a licence to install the software on one of their own pc's so when I come to create demo or training videos for them it's all legal and above board. Over the past ten years I must have been instrumental in twenty or more such purchases but I have never had a need to buy it myself, though - until now.
I was just about to purchase my own copy of Camtasia Studio 8 when I came across this topic. No copy/paste of zoom keyframes? You're kidding?!
Not only is my order on hold until this feature is returned but I will also email all my clients with CS7 to not upgrade. It's probably the most use feature for me!
Please, please put it back! -
-
-
Add me to this list too! This was a regular part of my workflow also. There are other aspects of 8 that I like. It is a more regular interface. I can understand inadvertently leaving out this feature - development is a complex process. But now that you have heard how important this is to so many customers, please fix!
update 12/17/2012 - Grouping does work well. I have now added grouping to my regular workflow and don't have as much of an issue with this any more. Key point is that once you group them, you don't ungroup. This isn't a detriment, though. Grouping can give a cleaner timeline. Chalk this one up to 'retraining' cost of transitioning to version 8.

Matching scale from one clip to the next is a must. Please add back in.
Thanks -
-
I'm new to Camtasia, and I already miss this feature. Had to make multiple cuts and would very much like the ability to copy and paste zoom keyframes. In the meantime I'll try grouping and see how it works for me as others here seem to havehad hit-or-miss success.
-
-
Eric, Jeff, Erin and others:
If you are looking for efficient ways to use grouping, check out this short video tutorial: http://www.techsmith.com/tutorial-cam...
The key is to not scale/zoom until your cuts are done.
Thank you for your feedback!
-Josh-
Thanks Josh. I had seen the video and it is helpful. Your right. The key thing to remember is not to zoom before the grouping. Unfortunately the auto zooming has usually don't that.
I copy and past zoom data from one clip to another would be a a nice update.

Yep, that's great, but it still doesn't help me copy and paste keyframes from one point on the timeline to another (regardless of whether they are on a single clip or across a group). For example, I create a zoom 'a' at a particular point on the timeline. It lasts ten seconds. I then restore the frame to its original size. Now I create zoom 'b' which lasts for a few more seconds before I again revert to the full frame. Now I want to create another zoom identical to zoom 'a'. How do I do that?
-
-
Ian, I think the way you have to do it is to cut the single clip into part 'a', part 'b', and then the remaining part after 'b' (let's call it 'c'), then designate 'a' and 'c' as a group, then apply the zoom to that group. I agree it is not as easy or intuitive as in CS7 but I believe it is at least possible to accomplish it.
-
-
Thanks for the video on grouping. That clarifies some points for me. @Josh, it didn't really matter to me whether I zoom before or after my cuts are done. If I zoom before cutting, then Cam8 automatically applies the zoom level to the newly created cut. If, however, I need to zoom after cutting, then it is necessary to group and then zoom.
@Ion and @Charles, if you absolutely must apply the same zoom to two disconnected cuts, the way I found to do this is to double click on the first zoom, note the values for the zoom (see the screen-clipping), create a new zoom on the second cut, and then set the values from the zoom in the first cut. It is awkward, but it works. This shows that it certainly is technically possible to copy/paste a zoom, so certainly hope that TechSmith adds the feature back in. However, at this point, it no longer slows me down.
I really like Cam8. In many ways it is more intuitive than Cam7. This is the weirdest thing that I found. (Cam8 does crash more than Cam7, and in some cases, it completely destroys the project file, so it has proved useful to me to save often. Josh, other TechSmith employees, if it would help, I can send a corrupted Cam8 project so you can hopefully fix this.)
-
-
Well, I wouldn call that a copy paste at all. Just the ability to create the same zoom/pan.
-
-
Right click, copy. Right click, paste. Somehow I prefer the old way ;-) Thanks for the suggestions though.
-
-
I too will be migrating back to Camtasia 7 (or Premiere). Having to constantly manually enter numbers into the Visual Properties screen is making me crazy. With each Camtasia update (1,2,3,now 4) I keep hoping to see this fixed.
Feels like this is the buggiest Camtasia yet :-( -
-
I'm not sure that you can call copy/paste a feature it's pretty basic.
I think I'd honestly be happier if you said "we forgot" than "we chose not to include this".
I always worry when I suddenly realise that the people making the software, appear not to have used their own software in any meaningful way...- view 3 more comments

It's really not. I said upon its release that CS8 is the best release of the product they've ever done, and I stand by that assessment. For the record, they took nearly two years to release CS8, significantly more time than any whole number release that came before it. But revolutionary upgrades such as this are obviously at much stronger risk of being panned by those who "just liked the way it worked before." CS8 is incredibly powerful and flexible for those who learn to leverage it.
Mark: Just group your callouts with the video track before you move or extend it, and you'll be golden...
I do agree that copy and paste of animation (zoom) points should be back in the product, and while understanding in the beginning, I'm actually a tad disconcerted after having seen four maintenance releases come and go without its inclusion. I know it's no small deal to implement, but c'mon y'all...

I concur with Daniel that this is not a crappy product. I really do like your products.
I agree that a few items need to be put back into the product (and sooner than later). I also concur with Daniel's statement about being understandable in the beginning and being a tad disconcerted about how long it is taking to get these items back into the product. Does the timeline have to be completely rewritten to put back some of these item's functionality? The not knowing is "killing" us. Just tell us you are working on it and we can be patient.

I downloaded 8 again three days ago after buying initially 8 months. Back then I immediately switched back to V7 due to the many crashes.
V8 is now more stable - but within 3 days it destroyed one of the 5 projects I created, no longer recognizing it. Fortunately it was only a small one.
Not being able to copy zooms and other effects is a major pain, but I could probably live with it, if the grouping suggestion listed above was working reasonably well.
But A it doesn't and B there are too many other issues which make working with V8 much less efficient and more risky - at least for me.
To clarify: I am using Camtasia only BECAUSE of its effects, especially zoom and pan and call-outs. Otherwise it would be just a video editor and screen recorder and there are better video editors available.
Making it hard or impossible to work with the functions which make Camtasia what it is, is a huge let-down for me.
I can not first finish all editing and then add effects as described above. That's just not a realistic workflow for me.
I must be able to make changes after everything is ready, based on reviewing the finished video, to synchronize effects with audio or based on feedback by others or based on not liking something when looking at it again.
1: I find the fact that all the effects are now hidden and I have to open them up to see them when editing frustrating. Lots of extra clicking and less overview. I don't
2: I have to select a clip to split it instead of just positioning the head and then cutting. While this has some potential advantage, the reality is I have to move my mouse around much more than ever before.
3: When adding a call-out I can not see it - making it very difficult to position it. I have to move the head before I can see the call-out - only then can I correctly position it. A lot of extra work again.
4: When reopening a zoom effect I can not re-position it easily in 8 - the zoom preview window is gone. To get it you have to realize that Camtasia now jumps to a different tab rather than to the Zoom Tab when you double click on the zoom effect. Again more clicks. (click to view the hidden zoom, double-click on the zoom, then click on Zoom Tab to view zoom preview window re-position it)
5: If you zoom a clip and then split it and remove the zoom from the first part of the clip there is no easy way to remove it from the 2nd part of the clip. Although this does not seem to happen all the time.
6: If you groups some clips and then zoom and then want to add another cut or adjust some speed of parts of that group you are in trouble.
7: You can not copy zoom and pan effects
8: I just grouped three clips, then added zoom, then removed the zoom, and suddenly the first two clips no longer fitted into the screen - they were way smaller than the preview window.
If I could even group items, apply the zoom and then ungroup them and all clips would remember their settings, it would be great. But a workaround which causes this many problems is not a workaround at all.
V8 might look somewhat cooler - but I prefer working functionality.
I don't mind changing my workflow to accommodate improvements - but the only useful improvement I have found for my needs is that I can move multiple clips together.
That function alone made me want to upgrade to 8. Not the fancy looking interface.
I was looking for ways to improve my workflow and to speed up tasks - not to have extra work.
Unfortunately in 8 there is no way to have all the content move from the right to fill the empty space after a deletion: a simple and extremely useful feature in many video editors.
If you are happy with 7, only upgrade after seriously evaluating 8: For me the few nicer functions do not make up for the extra problems, the much more complex and time intensive workflows and the potential of ruining my projects (Frequent saving is not enough - you will have to back up the changes as otherwise the project is useless when you try to open it, and all the work is gone, regardless how often you saved it).
If you have never used 7, this will not affect you as much - you will simply be missing something that's not there - not something you had before.
But I won't hold my breath waiting for a fix. After 8 months of requests by customers there is not even a potential time line other than "a future release" (how long is a piece of string?) provided for restoring these functions.
Looks like they have much bigger problems to solve before they can start restoring functions which were lost when upgrading to 8. I'll give 8 another try maybe in 6 months or so - there are too many issues to be resolved even in the very latest version to hope for anything earlier than that.
I won't give up on Camtasia - it's too good a tool for what it does. But it looks as if V8 seriously went off the rails, if I am still encountering this many problems this far down the track.
:( -
-
8 months ago this was posted and there is still not a fix.
You would think a basic function like this would have been worked out much sooner or are we going to have to pay for the next version to get it??? -
-
SIrs, Please refer to Jessie Lathaie's comment. View the entire thread. She already stated this will be fixed in a future release and no we will not have to pay for it. No need to give up on Camtasia. It will be fixed. We just have to wait patiently.
-
-
Hi Mrs Notetaker -
I already wrote I won't give up on Camtasia - but I have given up on 8 for the 2nd time and will wait until it works properly.
I was spending way to much time in 8 performing simple tasks which take up much less time in 7. I will try 8 again in 6 - 12 months.
I am sure they are working feverishly on improving 8.
But a statement: "Will be included in a future release" by any software company means simply that the task has not even been scheduled yet.
So they have no timeline when they can release it and can not give you even a general idea of when the feature might become available.
So don't hold your breath - it will take at least 6 months - if not much more.
Of course I'd love to be proven wrong. If all the 7 features work properly again and the new functionality of 8 are added, it would be a great product
But please Techsmith, do not hide the effects and animations in little drop down tabs.
They are the most important functions of Camtasia and make Camtasia what it is and what differentiates it from other video editors. I have to see all effects when editing - and can't guess where they are or click little tabs all the time.
At the very least add a function to ALWAYS show them for ALL clips and turn that function on by default, so users can hide it if they want to. -
-
I have taken to editing in 7 and importing into 8 if I wish to add features not available on 7. Someone missed the boat here, going from a simple, useful interface to this one, which lacks usability and makes people on a deadline (me) regret the $150 upgrade fee.

Any idea on timeline for this, I see notes saying to be added in upcoming update (3 months ago.)

It is unbelievable that this absolutely essential feature has still, 11 months after the first posting here, not been reintroduced in V8. Unfortunately I just upgraded to 8 before realizing that I would be losing featres like this one. This is going to be a huge step backward for my productivity in using the product. A staggering misunderstanding of how customers use the product...
-
-
Personally I think V8 has gone so far down the wrong track that it might be hard to recover many of the features that made the workflow of 7 so brilliant compared to a real video editor.
8 seems to want to be a real video editor as opposed to being a great tutorial generator.
Unfortunately the result is the worst of both worlds. I dumped 8 because the new functions in it do not outweigh the loss of features which make 7 so useful. I am better off editing in 7 and doing some extra work on an other editor - still leaves me with plenty of time to spare compared to working in 8.
The fact that Techsmith doesn't even bother responding does indicate they don't even recognize how far down the wrong track they went nor that they are interested in resolving it.
A cool looking interface does not make a great application - no matter what the designers are saying! -
-
Personally I like the new features inside of Camtasia Studio 8 but have to admit there are a few features I miss. What are some of the things in detail that make you not like Version 8 over 7? Just curious of what you would like to see and if it can be done with Version 8. Let us know and thank you.
-
-
If you scroll up a bit, you can see a big list of issues I encountered in 8 while giving it a very good try and running 7 and 8 next to each other for comparison.
I'd love to know, if any of these issues have been resolved.
Yes, 8 has some great new features. But many of them - at least when I tried them three months ago - do not work reliable or cause a much bigger workload to achieve things. Crashing wasn't as much of a problem as it had been when 8 came out and I dumped it within two days, but too many crucial functions are (were) just too hard to use. -
