Can I record audio from Skype conversations with Camtasia?
This question came in through Twitter, and I thought it would be appropriate to post it here as well.

Yes, this is possible. I did some testing today and found a process that seemed to work really well. Here’s a video tutorial that shows you the process I used.

Here are a couple important steps to remember:
1. Recording system audio with Camtasia Studio 7 requires Vista or Windows 7. If you are running XP, here’s an article that mentions some workarounds: http://www.techsmith.com/learn/camtas...
2. Within Skype, make sure you set your audio output to Speakers. I tested this using my usb headset as the audio output and it didn’t capture anything.

If you are using Camtasia for Mac and Skype, you would need to set the audio output from Skype to Soundflower and then the system audio input (in System Preferences) to Soundflower. Camtasia can then pickup the audio from Skype.- view 2 more comments

You may also want to try MX SkypeRecorder
http://skyperec.com/ which seems quite stable. Well, at least it never let me down unlike other apps. Hope it'll help. -

Daniela, if I understand correctly, if the sound is coming through your computer's speakers, you can capture it with either Camtasia Studio 7 or Camtasia for Mac. In Camtasia for Mac, you can see how to record system audio here: http://www.techsmith.com/learn/camtas...
Ryan's process shown above I think should still work in your case. -

so how do you capture the video portion of the call with Camtasia?
I do not want to buy or download another program if there is a way to do it with Camtasia. -

I'm on Camtasia: Mac 2, and I am trying to record a skype conversation while playing a game. When I change the Skype output to soundflower I can no longer hear the skype conversation (just through basic headphones) which is a problem. I need to be able hear it in real time and record it... Help?-

I am trying to record a Skype conference call and my PC video with Camtasia. I get the video and my microphone input just fine, but I don't get the incoming audio. I'm running Windows home 64-bit, and have tried analog audio and USB audio with exactly the same results.
I've spent hours on this without any joy. Can anybody suggest something that might work or name any other recording software that I could try as an alternative? I've really got to get this wrapped up!

This helped. I finally found that I had to use analog audio through the rear panel connectors, and then it worked. I had been connecting through the front panel analog audio connectors, and had mic but no system audio. And of course USB, which is what I really wanted to use failed the same way.

if someone could go into detail about how to record both sides of the skype conversation that would be great! ... all the above does not seem to work with snagit ... i can either record the mic or the system audio but to get both seems unatainable at the moment ... i have tried everything above so anymore input would be great thanks.

Hello chinapassage. It cannot be done in SnagIt 11 that I know of without other audio equipment. Are you using SnagIt 11 or Camtasia Studio for the PC? The above methods that Ryan Eash had explained and posted links to are some great methods. I could give an explanation on a mix-minus hook-up that can only be done with a small mixing board and most people do not want to spend the extra money and consider it overkill unless they are making some Professional Videos that they get paid for. i am using snagit 11 i was going to purchase Evaer as i was wanting to record skype conversations however i thought snagit would be a better overall tool to use for other purposes as well ...however i am having trouble doing what is needed ... i have tried Ryans methods with no success only able to record the audio of either my mic or theirs .. doesnt need to be professional but would like to be able to hear clearly both sides of the conversation. So yeah i dont want to do the overkill and get a mixing board ... my current PC is running 64 bit win7 and the driver i am using is SoundMax integrated studio HD sound driver ...
if you watch Ryans videos they are empty just one slide and doesnt say anything ... unless of course i dont know how to use his site properly...
so open to any ideas as i would prefer to use snagit than Evaer...

chinapassage. I was able to view Ryan's videos so I am not sure what is going on with that. He is using Camtasia Studio 7 and not SnagIt 11. Like I stated before, you cannot record as far as I know Skype conversations using SnagIt 11. You would have to get Camtasia Studio but, before doing that if you just want the audio on both sides, yours and the other persons you could try using Audacity and see if that works. Let us know and sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Like I said with a small mixer it is possible but, without it I do not think it can be done using SnagIt 11 for recording both sides of the conversation.

Hi i bought Camtasia 2 with the intensions to start recording gameplay for my youtube. This went great until i wanted to play with some friends. Camtasia was not able to pick up the sound of Skype. It can pick up the sound of the game that i was recording and my voice but not that of my friends. I found a make shift solution but the audio quality is terrible! What i do is play the conversation without headphones so it picks the sound up just like my voice. I like my youtube fans and i dont like doing that to them :/ Please if anyone could help me out. Other details are im on a mac. This is the reason i need to ask this even thought it has already bin asked. Thanks in advance

Im trying to recored a game and im trying to recored my skype conversation with the camtasia 7
but only my voice i can hear since i don't have the output of skype in speaker.
And i don't want it to be in speaker i want the out put in my head set
so how can i record skype output from my head set setting with my gameplay? -
