Captions under video in Camtasia Studio 8

The first 2 pics are CS7. The last 2 pics are CS8 showing how not being able to place the captions under the video cause an overlap confusion with the slide beneath.

Unfortunately, this doesn't help me at all. I already edited my video which created "breaks" in the video track. Changing the canvas size or adding "zoom and pan" refuses to cross the breaks. Now I'm stuck. I cannot manually create the exact same canvas size across dozens of breaks. CS8 is so brain damaged...it didn't work like that in CS7.

There is one thing you could do UltimateBargins. I'm sorry it's going to be time-consuming to recover, but I think this will be much faster than starting over or living with the captions you don't like.

1. Export your captions.
2. Remove your captions from the video.
3. Produce your video--highest quality setting possible. I think MP4 would be fine, but you could go down the Custom Production Path and do something like an AVI.

Then...

4. Create a new project.
5. Import your recently rendered video.
6. Position it on the canvas, and resize the canvas so that there are 80 extra pixels (I think that's the number) below your video.
7. Import your captions.
8. Render the final video.

I know that's a huge pain, and we've been hearing this feedback from others as well, and we're taking it seriously.

In the future, what you might do is similar to what I mentioned above, but you could do all of your video, except for the captioning, in version 8. Then, produce the video, bring it in to version 7 and add your captions there.

Again, not ideal, but I wanted to put it out there for you.

I think the problem that I mentioned with captions and "zoom and pan" is a "symptom" of an underlying worse "cause". When cutting a section of video, CS8 creates a split or "break" at that point when CS7 did not. The "caption under video" option in CS7 simply (and automatically) resized the canvas. Now the resizing is manual. I have no idea how anyone could have justified removing automation in preference to forcing the user to manually make the adjustment, and when combined with the "automatic split" new behavior of cutting, I don't understand how this brain-damaged behavior got past the quality assurance team (and that's probably the "cause").

I'm with Ultimate Bargains on this one! I'm at a University where we are trying to get instructors to caption more of their videos. Now if they don't want to have their screen recordings or PowerPoints to get covered by captions, they'll have to go through a time-consuming work around. As a result, I can only imagine that a lot of instructors will simply choose NOT to caption. Really, TechSmith, removing the Under Video feature was a bonehead move. Please put it back, and quickly.

Hi, I using the CS 8 Trial version and would really like to render my videos with captions. In CS 7 I was able to choose "under the Video" overlay made. I cannot select "captions under the video" mode. PLEASE PLEASE bring it back, with additional option to increase the space between the Video above and a bigger Caption Box just below it.

Because I frequently caption lessons with a considerable amount of text on the screen, (computer programming is one example) the ability to put captions below the video has often been a very necessary option. I can't find that selection in Camtasia 8. Hopefully, it has just been moved? Thank You!

I can't say I'm happy with the changes in V 8.0.3 regarding the under video captions. I need to produce my videos with captions as mp4s without player. So I'm still creating and rendering without captions in V8 and then importing the video and the captions seperately in V7. Not really the easy way and I think it causes qualitiy losses as well.

have you tried using under video captions in 8.0.4 [custom production]?

CS8.0.4 doesn't "burn in" the "under video" captions. It is a mutually exclusive option "burn in" or "under video", you can't get both. The "under video" option requires using the player HTML stuff. It doesn't get into the actual mp4 file.

For now, I am using the lame work-around to generate the mp4 without captions. Then creating a new project with the mp4, adding the captions, and then adjusting the canvas thing above the mp4 video. Selecting the "burn in" option then creates a new mp4 with the burned in captions.

Yes, that's how I've create burned-in under-video captions. I must render twice.
