Can I delete a ScreenChomp video from "the cloud"?

Thank you for the quick response! I would, however, prefer to have the trial chomp deleted from the system, unsearchable as it (currently) may be. How would I request its removal - through the Contact Us link at the bottom of the chomp?

Is screen chomp.com down? I keep getting 404 when tying to access the site.

First, let me say that I love Screenchomp, which I saw at BLC 2011 last week. As a user, I need to be able to have the ability to delete self-generated content, even if it is saved under a unique, discrete url. As an educator, I had hoped to use this program to challenge my students to create their own Screenchomp videos in which they engage, say, in poetry analysis. However, I simply cannot ask them to make use of an application that denies them control over their own content. For me, this is a show-stopper issue on an outstanding program.

My question: will you please update your app to permit user control over deletion of self generated content? Further, can you please explain the reason for this serious limitation? I would gladly pay money for this app, but not as it stands right now.

Craig, the alternative would be to use a Facebook account for video hosting, then you can manually remove videos from your wall as needed.

Regarding your response to Craig Jollymore...
Please realize that many folks who love and wish to use Screenchomp prefer NOT to use Facebook! While it seems to be assumed by so many folks anymore that Facebook is "de facto" so to speak, there are many who don't want anything to do with it, and also those working in situations where Facebook access is either not appropriate or not permitted/may be blocked (at work, at a school, etc.).
So please don't make the assumption that EVERYONE loves and wants and uses Facebook in every situation. Facebook is not the one-stop-shopping solution here.
It's wonderful that Screenchomp can work with Screencast.com's storage capability, but we just simply need the ability to do complete file-management when using this upload option.

@Douglas Whitehall - we definitely understand that right now Facebook is blocked in a lot of schools and currently not a great way to share in a classroom setting. Sharing video in the Educational setting is something we are continually trying to do a better job with - knowing there is no standard. Thanks for your input!

If you'd like a bit of real-life experience info here... as a tech coach, and my office is in my large school district's middle school, asking students to use personal email addresses to establish login accounts is not a big issue. Even if a student's personal email domain (gmail or whatever) is blocked for student accounts, our school is OK with students using their personal email addresses to initially establish an account (which they can do at home). We do that with an online preZentation service with our students all of the time (note the Z; you probably know the service I refer to).
So, your concern about logins and such may be a bit moot. Students don't mind doing this; they are used to it. As well, remember that Facebook requires a user login too! So there is no difference as far as having to ask a student to log in to Screencast.com, Facebook, or anything else for that matter.
Actually, my school district feels a lot more secure about unblocking Screencast.com (which they have done) as opposed to Facebook (which we still block).
Students managing a Screencast.com login is not a biggie here at all. I work with a lot of students and teachers, and, with our school's "opt-out" policies, students may use their personal email addresses to establish accounts on sites such as yours. Teachers simply notify parents about what is going on, and they may opt-out if desired... and almost none at all do so these days.
So... don't worry about students handling logging in to your services... they'll be just fine. :))

I'll add my 2 cents and re-iterate the desire for file management/control. Also as a screencast.com user I would like to have the ability to put my recordings there. Great app, I look forward to seeing how it develops!

I would like to add some thoughts to this screenchomp discussion. I see where people are going with this. Using a handful of iPads with a class of students right now means the student HAS to get back to the same iPad they created a chomp on to get the link again. Not sure how bad that is.....but control of your own content is nice. I am not sure I agree with some thoughts about students using their personal email (which they cannot access at school) for school purposes (which is why I am trying to get us to turn on gmail in GA4E).
Besides content management these are some other features we would like :
1) scrolling to continue some work (one page is not enough to solve a math problem....a scroll the size of another screen would be good
2) tabs - a handfull of multiple screens would be good to preload various content (pictures or questions)
3) multiple images
4) some callouts/tools - like arrow or circle, or square
5) Android version
6) embed code in addition to link

1. INTRUSIVE - EVIL: You are forcing users to give you access to information that they may not want you to have. You must give users a choice!!! You can have my email address but that is all I want you to have.

2. DELETE a ScreenChomp from the cloud. Actually, there was no indication of what I pressed until after the fact. I do not want the material accidentally made available to anyone but me. Delete, private, share (all, specific individual, group).

3. Markers should have attributes like
A. Thickness
B. Line type (dotted, broken, solid, etc).
C. Highlight

Hi... we actually don't collect any identifiable information, there are certain things needed to post to your Facebook wall, if that's what you're referring to, however... We don't need email address if you go to screenchomp.com. In fact, if you never share that URL nobody will EVER see that video you create... we don't even let Google index that video. And Facebook log-in is ONLY necessary if you want to share your video on Facebook.

When I go to ScreenChomp.com I expect to view my recording list and download to my PC or delete from the stored list. Where is the login? Currently, you do not provide or indicate a way of access from a PC online.

It is referred to as an "experimental innovation"... I'm betting that what we have now is baby Screenchomp. Knowing how Camtasia and cousin Jing have evolved ( actually, "intelligent design" might be the more appropriate term in when referring to TechSmith :) I'm guessing that Screenchomp will do the same in good time. TechSmith rocks. I can be patient. One more thing...as we remind our students all of the time...the internet is forever. TechSmith is a company with an excellent track record. I'll gladly relinquish a little control on this one for the "greater good"...It is a free tool, after all.

Agreed re:Techsmith. I also love the company and the products. I *might* be willing to jump the fence, here, and agree with you re: "relinquish(ing) a little control" if only then Techsmith would specifically state what happens with the Screenchomp videos over time. Do they hold onto them forever? Do they auto-delete them if inactive over a period of time? What is their privacy policy re: the videos? Where could they potentially go? What is their server security policy?

Also agree... it is indeed a freebie, and a neat one at that. But if they CHOOSE to OFFER it, then they still have some degree of moral,or even perhaps legal obligation to DISCLOSE what exactly happens with the video files, I would think.

So am I willing to bend in the wind here... perhaps... as long as we as users KNOW what exactly happens with the videos. So far all I have heard from Techsmith is that the only way the videos are accessible is by the unique URL. So be it... but it doesn't answer the question of what HAPPENS with the videos over time.

As an educator, I absolutely have to have this information clearly stated by Techsmith so that I can defend any and all inquiries or challenges by parents or other community groups. As a 33-years-in-the-business biology and technology teacher, but still a technologically vibrant one, I am sad to see our educational situation change to such a litigious sort of flavor. But it has changed as such, so I'd need this info from Techsmith in order to defend the use of its products and services by my students.

I have asked for clarification. We would love to use this tool, but our instructional-design process creates intellectual property that we do not want anyone else to be able to create derivatives from, share with other users, etc.

Because we do not claim ownership rights, anything you create with ScreenChomp (and get a screenchomp.com URL back) we will not do anything with it unless you share it publicly... for example, we may re-tweet a customer's tweet that may have a video, but that's about it. On occasion we contact a customer we has tweeted a video and ask them if we can use it in our newsletter.

Additionally, just to be clear the only people who can ever see a video made with ScreenChomp are the folks with the URL linking to the video you create. If you never share it, nobody ever sees it (not even Google). The only people who see it are those folks with the URL.

That makes it appear you can do whatever you want with my content. If that is not the case, you should change your terms of service. I think the app is great, but my employer will not let me use it if it means we are giving away the rights to our intellectual property in the process.

wow that is disturbing that you won't or can't answer the actual substance of my question. I am clearly not the only one who is wondering about this.

Apologies, Todd. I am not understanding your question. We have had some people choose not to user our application because the video is rendered in our cloud (as opposed to on device or their cloud) and we understand that concern and limitation of our app.

I've been playing around with ScreenChomp (since getting an iPad). Using for a work project, and have uploading several sample projects. I can see how I can remove them from my device, but it appears I can't remove them from your server. I would like to see that they get removed from your ScreenChomp server or even better that I can save them directly as an mp4 video and bring them directly into Camtasia, instead of uploading and then downloading. Is this coming?

Hi Jody, we currently do not have plans to disable uploading to the cloud. I am glad that you found how you can download the mp4 file though! I know it's a bit of a work around to get them into Camtasia, but I'm happy you have found that useful. Even though you videos are in the cloud - there is no way for anyone to find them unless you send the URL to someone (they are not findable by Google). If there are big issues, please contact screenchomp@techsmith.com.

Is there a timeframe of how long these videos live on screen chomp? Do you remove content when it's not access for a period of time?

As of now, we keep all videos up on screenchomp.com. If we ever change that we will be sure to give folks months of notice.

Screenchomp.com is not actually a site, for a video we generate a unique URL using the screenchomp.com top level domain, but you cannot actually go to screenchomp.com. Apologies for the confusion!

The only negative is that there is no way to delete your video from the internet without making a special request from the developers of ScreenChomp, but as those devs point out, the url is a string of random numbers, so it’s pretty unlikely anybody would figure it out. From visiting their site, it sounds like they are working towards adding file management and possibly an Android version as well. This is an exciting technology, and I look forward to seeing where they take it next..
