HDCP Problem when Recording the Screen of an iPad 2 or Android Tablet
Dear Kelly Rush, I watched your clip on YouTube about capturing video feed from an ipad. I did this with an iphone 4 and something strange happened. I have a really confusing message that is displayed when I follow the instructions. This reason it is confusing is that both my video card and monitor support HDCP. This is the message: Fail to Play this Video. Your video card or connected monitor may not support high-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). Changing resolution or using dual monitors may also cause this problem. To play this video, you may connect your monitor via analog connection such as component or VGA. - Any ideas??? I thought the Aver Media HD Capture Card was capable of capturing the signal from the iphone? Why does it work for your Ipad but, not for my iphone?

Hi Jason!
Good question! Honestly, I'm not really sure, as I haven't tried capturing with an iPhone. I've so far confirmed the setup works with:
- iPad 2
- iPad 3
- Asus Transformer
I'll see if I can find an iPhone 4 to try it out with; according to Apple's website it *SHOULD* work, but we're sort of in a gray area for what they intended it for, so every scenario is a unique one.

Kelly,
Thank you for your response. Quick question: Could this be the problem?
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD0...
This url at apple.com for the HDMI adapter states:
*Video mirroring is available with iPad 2 or later and iPhone 4S.
I tried this using an iphone 4, not an iphone 4s. -

Hi Jason,
I tried an iPhone 4, and it cannot function in mirror mode (meaning, showing what you're doing on the desktop). It is able to capture from specific apps that play video (i.e. Netflix, iTunes), but otherwise it doesn't work. I read a thread that seems to confirm this to be the expected result:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD0...
It does mention that iPhone 4s supports mirroring mode, and I'm trying to get one of those to try out. Sit tight...

Jason,
Regarding your last post, that's exactly it. I found an iPhone 4s and hooked it up, and the home screen appeared right away. I tested it with some apps, and they were all mirroring without any trouble, and many of them even worked in landscape mode.
So in summary: iPhone 4 DOES NOT work with mirroring, the iPhone 4S DOES appear to work with mirroring.
Probably not exactly the answer you were looking for, but that's what we've got!

Kelly,
I ran out and bought an Iphone 4S. I get the screen to come up on Aver Media Center for about half a second, and then it gives me the same exact message....
Any ideas?

Hey Jason,
You aren't trying to press the record button in the AverMedia software, are you? It's been a while since I tried, but I remember it throwing out a message about HDCP and using VGA to capture...which ended up being why Camtasia Studio helped, because it let me capture without using their record function.
Probably not the case, but figured it'd be worth getting out of the way...

Kelly,
Thank you. I don't even get the chance to click the record button before the error message is displayed.
I got to the TV section, plug in the phone, it shows on the screen for a second, and then goes directly to the error message.
I tried this on the version of the software you used on YouTube, and a more recent update to Aver Mediacenter as well, and I get the same result.
I updated all video drivers, bios, monitor drivers, etc.
Best Regards,

Jason,
Huh, OK. Next thing to check, what version of Windows are you using? I know that XP can have some funky issues with drawing things on the screen, whereas probably Vista and definitely Windows 7 should work better.
Also, what kind of video card do you have, and how do you connect your monitor to it (VGA, DVI, etc.)? Those are less likely culprits, but worth knowing.

Windows XP Service Pack 3. DVI Connection to a Samsung Syncmaster B2330 Display. Video Card is a EVGA Geforce GTX550 Ti.

Jason,
OK. Well, I talked a bit with someone else, and we are thinking Windows XP probably isn't the most likely factor. I can't guarantee that since I've never tried capturing on an XP system, but it seems less likely of a factor.
Do you have access to an iPad to try capturing with? If you do, that might be helpful to start trying to figure out where exactly in the chain things are falling apart. If not...let me know, I'll keep thinking about other things to try!

Addendum: For now, why don't you switch back over to the version of the AverMedia software I used in the video, just so we can try to eliminate that as a factor. Also, when you try to capture, leave the iPhone disconnected, go all the way to the TV section where you choose HDMI as the source (and hopefully see a black screen) and then plug in the phone. That's the process I used when testing the 4s, so that's the process that I know works.

Thanks Kelly. No access to an Ipad that allows mirroring. I tried leaving iphone disconnected before choosing HDMI as a source, but I'm still experiencing the same problem. I test the iphone by hooking it up directly to an HDTV, and it works fine, so the iphone, adapter, and hdmi cable appear to be working correctly. Is there a cheap way to test Vista or Windows 7? I've already sunk about $400.00 into this project by purchasing the capture card, adapter, video card, and new iphone. I'm extremely reluctant to spend more.

Hey Jason,
No, I can definitely appreciate that; I'm really hoping I can figure this out with you! Unfortunately, this is one of those things that's tough to troubleshoot without being there.
Well, moving along on the list of things to rule out...there are two HDMI ports on the back of that capture card. One of them (I think) is used to output to a display (output what, I'm not sure, maybe the video from their capture software?). The other is the capture input. They didn't really do a stellar job of labeling which is which. You seem to have covered most of your bases here, but just to make sure, have you tried plugging the HDMI cable into each of those ports on the card, to make sure you got the right one?
As far as another way to test Windows...I'll think about it, but I'm not coming up with anything at the moment. It's looking to me like it's probably some specific component of your computer setup, since like you said, it appears the phone, adapter, and cable are working. Short of sending me your whole computer...this might take a bit of back and forth. Hope you can bear with me!

Hey Jason,
How is it going with getting mirroring working? Any luck yet?

I tried it out on both hdmi connections as you suggested. The one labeled AV_IN doesn't do anything. The other one labeled HDMI is the one I've been using and it gives me the same error message. I'm going to try and install Windows 7 if I can find a version that's cheap.

Ok, great Jason. Let me know what happens either way, and if it doesn't work...we'll keep plugging away at it!

I broke down and bought Windows 7....it works now. It looks great, but it's bittersweet because it cost me a total of $600 to get everything to work. It will cost me more once the trial version of Camtasia runs out. Now I just need to find people who need me to edit footage of iphone and ipad apps.

That's great news Jason! Well, not that you had to end up paying extra money, but great news that you got it working! Like I said, I didn't think Windows XP would necessarily be the problem...but couldn't rule it out. Thanks for all the investigative work, the next time I hear someone is using Windows XP to capture and having trouble, I'll make sure to refer them here.
Post some links to your videos when they're done!

Hi,
I am still having issues for iPAD mirroring to the Avermedia Application.
I get the HDCP error message when I select HDMI as source. At occasions, I can see the iPAD screen for a couple of seconds but eventually, it fails with the HDCP error.
I am using Win7-64-bit environment.
Can Anybody help?
Thanks,

Hello Himanshu,
What type of video card are you using in your computer? If it's not a dedicated video card (i.e. it is just a chip on your motherboard), perhaps that could be the issue? If you do have a dedicated card, maybe try updating the drivers for it? Also, what version of the AverMedia software are you using? I know they've changed it at least a few times, so it's worth knowing.

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for responding!
The model as listed under Device manager is :
AverMedia H727 PCIe Hybrid DVBT HDMI Capture card.
Its a dedicated video capture card installed on PCIe slot. The driver is latest & up to date.
I am using Aver Media Center 3D version 1.7.9.
Thanks,

Hi Himanshu,
Is this the card you're using?
http://www.avermedia.com/product/Prod...
If it is...that's a bit different from the card I've tested, so I'm not sure if there might be differences potentially. It seems like it should work...but again, I've never tested that particular card, so I couldn't say for sure.
