I realize I'm the early adopter here and this is certainly not meant to be a complaint, but I've found that Jing will always crash on launch when installed on Windows 8 x64 Consumer Preview.
Here's what I was able to find in the Event Log:

1Hello,
Today we released a Jing update that works on Windows 8 preview builds. You can check for updates within Jing if you haven't been notified that an update is available.
We are working on updating all of our products to work on Windows 8, they all have different challenges and time lines. We will provide more updates here as soon as we have any new information or releases.
Thank you for your patience. Please continue to send your feedback and questions.
Thank you,
Tiffany

Hi Mr. Clements,
Thank you for your feedback, we really appreciate the specific details. We are in the process of testing Jing on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview and this will help the team.
Thank you,
Tiffany -

I am also using the Windows 8 CP and having the same issue. I love this product and find it hard to get thru the day without it. I am more than willing to test an update
Thanks

Would just like to add more detail if this helps:
The application is having UriFormatException with message: Invalid URI: The URI is empty.
The stacktrace is:
at System.Uri.CreateThis(String uri, Boolean dontEscape, UriKind uriKind)
at System.Uri..ctor(String uriString)
at TechSmith.Jing.UI.Program..ctor()
at TechSmith.Jing.UI.Program.get_Instance()
at TechSmith.Jing.UI.App..ctor()
at TechSmith.Jing.UI.App.Main() -

As all others that have commented I also get a crazy upon opening the program but on a 32-bit OS. I would also be willing to beta test a jing update for windows 8.
-
-
Is there an ETA on when this might be fixed? I'd be willing to test an unstable version if possible. I really wish Techsmith products were open source :(
-
-
I know Jing is a free program and I know Windows 8 CP is a beta. But did you not think the "techies" would not jump on it to test it?
I am pretty disappointed in the lack of support for this issue! Sorry.. just my 2 cents :/ -
-
Developers got access to the Consumer Preview build at the exact same time we did. I think it's a little insane to expect them to already have this resolved, especially since it's very possible this could be an OS bug, not an application bug.
They acknowledged the issue and said they're testing Jing against Win8. I think they've done a fine job so far. We should wait a little bit before we start reaching for our pitchforks.-
It's worth noting that this same issue was present in the Developer Preview as well - I know this as I pointed it out to them on twitter a couple days after the Dev Preview was released. So they've known about the issue for quite a while, and they would have had access to that build of Windows 8 - so this isn't something new with Consumer Preview.

I do not share Christopher's sentiment. I am simply reporting the issue and asking for an ETA. I do not expect them to have everything working right away. If this were an RTM that would be different.
-
-
OK.. I guess I came across to harsh. Can I use the excuse that it was too early in the morning? oK.. maybe not.. sorry
There has not been any communication for over 3 weeks and just wondering if there is an ETA..
Thanks and again.. Sorry :/-
Coffee man...it works wonders. =D

I have this problem too on Windows 8, would love to be able to use this program again (ETA please if possible).
-
-
same problem here. i hate to switch to something else before this gets fixed.
-
-
I think a previous message got deleted about this issue being report way back in the Developer Preview also. So that unfortunately tells me this is not going to get fixed anytime soon.
Guess I will start looking around :( -

Screenpresso isn't just good, it's incredibly good. Adjustable arrows, balloon callouts, tear effects, all free. And to think I would never have found this tool if it weren't for Jing crashing on Windows 8.
I've used Jing since day one and loved it. Heck, I told a lot of people about it. But it's been crashing since Win 8 Developer Preview and I feel there's been plenty of time to fix it. Sorry Techsmith, but I'm making a change. -
-
Techsmith made it clear in an email that they were retiring Jing and replacing it with Snagit. As such, when JingPro didn't work on Win8, I simply purchased Snagit with the 50% discount (thanks guys).
I needed Win8 to test cross-browser compatibility on IE10 (thinking ahead).
However, Snagit is also hosed on Win8, even tested 3 different compatibility modes. I'd have to agree with many of the people here. If Techsmith can't solve the compatibility issue, I'll have no choice but to go elsewhere. Been a HUGE fan and would hate to have to go.-
Replacing a quick, easy to use and FREE utility with something you have to PAY for is NOT the answer nor a solution. Unless it works for FREE then you're never going to win back the hearts and minds of your legions of loyal fans. I've turned HUNDREDS of people on to Jing, and when Windows 8 comes out I can tell you that NONE of them will pay money for a substitute, they will just do what I will do - find a FREE alternative. Snag-It is just too much $$$ for something you can revert back to Print-Scrn and Paint if you have to, let alone Screenpresso.

Thanks for the info Steve..
it would have been nice if someone from Techsmith could have simply replied letting us know this also. I do not ever remember seeing any sort of email about retiring Jing. The lack of communication on this issue is the most frustrating part. A simply reply is all it took.
Looks like I will start looking around and will probably recommending start using some other software at work since we have purchased a couple seats of it.
Oh well..! Time to move on..! -
-
I've not been one to give TechSmith crap about not having a Windows 8 compatible version out when Win8 isn't even close to RTM yet. However, I will absolutely agree that the lack of any communication regarding the issue is pretty deplorable. All they really need to do is reply in this thread and say "Sorry guys, we have no ETA but we are hard at work on a Windows 8 version."
They aren't jumping up to let their customers know that they will be taken care of. That makes me think they are not planning a Windows 8 version. I'm trying to see it from a company perspective but I can't think of any other reason to maintain radio silence with your customers unless you don't have any plans and you don't want to stir the already heated pot anymore than you have to. It seems like a no brainer that they'd at least patch the current version to work with Windows 8 but if they had plans to do that you would think they would have informed us by now, especially with all the animosity building up in these threads.
This is why I think companies like TechSmith should open source a core version of their software under an MIT license. They can then fork the core version, add in a bunch of extras, and sell it just like they do now. But then the community could hack on the core version, fixing fundamental compatibility issues like this one long before any in-house team gets around to fixing it (if they even plan to).
At first I was very confident we'd hear something from TechSmith soon, but after waiting a few weeks I think I'm wasting my time waiting for a new version or a patch. I'm sure there are some competitors out there worth a look. I haven't checked in a while. I'll try to put together a list and then I'll come back here and link all you guys to what I find. Hopefully this will help some people who have committed to Win8 like I have and don't want to wait an undetermined amount of time to hear if they are maybe working on a Win8 compatible version.-
It's RC and they are going to release Windows 8 within two months...

Hello,
Thank you for the feedback, I apologize that I did not post something earlier to let everyone know we are working on a Windows 8 compatible version of Jing. I don't have any release schedule yet, but I will update this post when we have more details.
Thank you,
Tiffany -

Hi,
I apologize for not including this in the post above, but we are also working on a Windows 8 compatible version of Snagit and all of our TechSmith products.
Thank you,
Tiffany -

I'm sure many people are relieved. Thank you for responding. Even tiny updates to the customer make a very big difference.

Having read this, it's Screenpresso for me! Simply put it works on Windows 8 and I think that's all evenone in this thread wanted - a simple screensaver app that worked

This also happens on Windows 8 RC X64. Is there any eta when this will be fixed? If you say a month, a day, a year, just any ETA is fine...
-
-
I think you need to relax. of course their first priority would be snag it an camtasia because the people using those are paying customers. Jing will obviously be the last thing to be updated.

What should I do? -

I'm fairly sure that they discontinued JingPro. I switched to SnagIt (took some time to get used to, but now I love as much as Jing). Ask support for an upgrade promo and I'd bet they'd hook you up a discount. Cheers!
