I would like Camtasia Studio to be able to import MTS Files (AVCHD)
I wonder why Camtasia doesn't read .mts files and if that will change in the future.

So, I had some spare time and finally got around to writing a simple GUI wrapper for FFMPEG. It's shared on screencast.com here:
http://www.screencast.com/t/BmnGpLR9I9mz
All you have to do is select a source file. The destination file path will auto-populate. You may change it if you wish. Since someone on this thread mentioned that they don't use the audio, I added an option to discard it instead of converting.
**If the destination file exists, it will be overwritten without a prompt**
****Important: The FFMPEG executable can be obtained from this site:
http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/
You will want to use the 32-bit static build, as seen here:
Extract the archive you get from that site, the ffmpeg.exe file is in the bin folder.
This wrapper application I'm providing must be placed in the same folder as the ffmpeg.exe file (the bin folder). But, to make it easier to get to, I would suggest creating a shortcut to it.
It should be self-contained so that anyone can run it. But, I wouldn't be surprised if I messed something up. So let me know if it doesn't work for you. Also if there are other minor tweaks that could be made, feel free to suggest them. If they're quick to implement, I'll throw them in there and update the binary posted on screencast.
DEMO VIDEO (Just to be completely clear on usage): http://screencast.com/t/iPsu9KfA
***PLEASE NOTE: This application is in no way endorsed by or supported by TechSmith. I am doing this in my personal time. You are using it at your own risk.***

i have camtasia studio 6, will not buy anymore camtasia as .mts is not supported. amazingly, camtasia people are on top of their game but do not realize most (if not all) the hd camcorders are .mts. it's a pain to convert and them import to camtasion. why not just support the format? they would make more money and have happy customers. Is anyone from Camtasia listening?

I'm with Jim on this one. I have been using Camtasia for a couple of years now. I admit like everyone else, that MTS lack of support is a little annoying but the wrapper works really well for me and it's fast....faster than converting it through other software like Hand Brake.
To be honest, I bought Camtasia for mostly screen capture and started to use it for video editing only in the last year out of convenience. I think there are much better software that can provide enhanced video editing features for much less and with MTS support.
As far as a screen capture program, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better solution. I have been able to cut my time down pretty significantly with the wrapper and directly uploading to Youtube.
Moving forward...I do hope they find a way to support MTS files. -

and here come all the yahoos who claim this isn't such a bad thing. and you guys found this thread how exactly? by searching for a problem that doesn't apply to you? Or are you techsmith guys trying to debunk the dissatisfaction expressed in this thread?? If you're so happy with the way things are because you don't use the product the way we all want to OR because you're ok with a little loss to your vid footage and jumping through hoops to convert with 3rd party products, then your post doesn't belong here nor does it apply. Lets stay focused on the issue and not hijack the thread. No mts/AVCHD support out of the box is an amateur blunder on the part of techsmith and it needs to be fixed or we (and people like us) need to spend our money elsewhere now and moving forward.

If dissatisfied users/customers like you are allowed to air their dissatisfaction, it's only fair that satisfied customers like me are allowed to air their satisfaction. I purchased my Camtasia/Snagit license recently and I was fully aware of the lack of direct MTS support in Camtasia. No big deal for me, as I purchased Camtasia primarily for its screencasting capabilities. That version 8 also acts as a rather capable video editing programme is just a nice bonus. For converting MTS videos, I ended up buying Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 for a very reasonable cost (about 40 euros). It's much more than a converter and it's a very powerful complement to Camtasia. If you are not satisfied with Camtasia, go get a better programme if you can find one.

I would definitely pay $50 more just to be able to import .mts files. I agree with the person above who suggested just offer two versions, one with mts capability and one without, if it's really that much of an expense. I work at a university where a couple of faculty have personal copies of camtasia, but we can't recommend the university adopt this program until this issue is resolved. Everyone's cameras use .mts now...

I don't think there's a need for 2 versions. Just make camtasia modular in that it can accept plugins. Make the AVCHD support an optional plugin .. done. This method would allow plugins to be created as industry/technology changes.

We are not all Yahoos here. Some of us are professionals and entitled to express our opinions(just like everyone else on this forum) based on usage of the software.
I found this thread and I stated the same problem with lack of MTS support and it was answered with Randy's temporary wrapper tool that decreased my time to start editing.
A 2GB file took 22 sec. to convert to a usable mp4 format. Is that such a big deal for some people? Until MTS support is added(hopefully in Cam 9), it's a good workaround.
To be honest, I am also annoyed that FLV support was removed for Camtasia 8 but I can still use my older version. So there must be a logical cost reason to not add extra licenses and it sounds like costs.
Why does that reasoning and logic suddenly translate to "techsmith guys trying to debunk the dissatisfaction expressed in this thread?"
Everyone has the freedom to express their dissatisfaction, but attacking other professionals that use the product is not the right way of being "focused" and solving the problem either.
Some of us are only trying to help other people understand that the workaround can decrease their editing time but does not take away from the fact that we still want MTS support for future versions. -

This thread is about customer complaints regarding a very specific issue. If you're a satisfied customer then go start a "I love camtasia" thread. Don't attempt to debunk the legitimacy of the complaints expressed in this one... pretty simple concept. The issues being raised here are not up for debate... they are not opinions... they are legitimate complaints and dissatisfaction based on factual lack of functionality and the focus of this thread should not be hijacked by debates. Allow us to have our issues addressed and stay focused on the issue. It has been stated by many that we are not satisfied with workarounds and not interested in entertaining those bandaids to a much bigger root issue. The pressure of this thread should be permitted to continue without distraction from the satisfied customers. Thats all I'm saying.

Wow, I finally got around to figuring out that wrapper program that Randy posted. I'll admit, it does work well (so far so good).

I will have to admit had I known that Camtasia 8 was not compatible with MTS files we would not have purchased it for the company. Glad we only purchased a couple of copies. I will have to do better research next time. I am disappointed that Camtasia does not have a built in solution. It seems rather short sighted on the devolpers part to not have it be compatible.

Valid solutions exist -- the company's just too fucking cheap to use them.

Recorded something using an HD camera and the AVCHD format isn't compatible with CS. Looking for a solution to converting the file into something that works with CS. Thanks!
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Anyone know how to convert AVCHD files into a format compatible with Camtasia Studio (PC)?. -

The easiest solution? Go to http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
to download the latest version. Easy to use and fairly quick. This is the app that was recommended to me from TechSmith support. -
