Need more video tracks in Camtasia Studio
how do you add another video track in CS7, is the only way to use the pip track? if we only have 1 video track how hard would it be to give us a few more (at least 4) in the an update to cs7?

Camtasia Studio 8 was just released and we've implemented the ability to use multiple tracks on the timeline now. The tracks are no longer specific to media type as well, this allows you a lot more freedom to create the types of videos that you want to create and aren't bogged down by unnecessary rules.
You essentially have unlimited video tracks and audio tracks to work with (or at least as many as your computer can handle - a lot). http://screencast.com/t/KCWSr6ou
We've also done work that will allow you to animate callouts and any other type of media for that matter. Here is a video of me animating a callout over top of a video: http://www.screencast.com/t/CVsvxgpKi
And you can now position video clips wherever you choose in the Canvas like one commenter requested: http://screencast.com/t/dt1ttRyF
I'd urge you to download it and try it out!

Is there any thought to adding a second video track in Camtasia Studio? There is multiple audio track capability, but not multiple video track capability. We run a pretty extensive business and rely heavily on Camtasia Studio. Typically I am simultaneously recording screen capture as well as video from a camcorder. Then, when I go to edit and produce in Camtasia, I would like to switch between video tracks while using one audio track. I find that I have to do painful workarounds for something that is standard in many video editing software packages. I don't like the PIP and am not interested in using that. I want to completely switch from one video track to another multiple times. Another option would be to make multiple views available so that the user could switch between views during playback (similar to the multiple angles available on some DVD movies).
Another nice addition would be for more formats of source video (mpeg formats or HD formats perhaps).
Thanks! Great product, but lacking in a couple of key areas.

Currently Camtasia Studio supports the one video track, although you can fake a second of sorts with the PiP track like you describe.
I'll turn this into a feature request. I think there is a lot if agreement that more tracks would be helpful. Can you show an example or describe why you'd need at least 4? -
-
If you use a cascade project build out approach, the PIP track can be used very effectively to achieve productions with multiple videos.
I have made 2 video side-by-side flash with 9 videos playing simultaneously.
It's not difficult; just takes a little extra effort. -
-
I do video editing as well as screencast tutorials. and currently I have to do my videos is pieces.. since I use more then one camera.. I use the pip track as a second track currently, but when you use a a lower third, another cam plus power points etc.. you end up having to do some work render it to an AVI then do some more and re render to an AVI etc.. then import the file to a dvd authoring program to burn to DVD.. I know its not the intended use for CS but I prefer it to the other bloated software, I like the customer supprt, price and stability, and I like the features it has so I chose to use it over the others. The ability to burn to a playable DVD would be nice to but i understand that might be pushing it a bit

A related idea would be to include an option allowing viewers to toggle between video tracks during playback. Consider the situation in which you have an instructor who is teaching a course or a tutorial or something of that nature, involving computer techniques. Some of the instruction involves demonstration or explanation by the instructor. That would perhaps be best captured by a video camera. Other instruction would take place directly on the computer, best captured by screen capture. The current PIP feature allows viewers to toggle between PIP and no PIP. How about allowing viewers to switch between two full-size videos in addition to the PIP option? That way, students could see a full screen of the instructor during class activity and switch to full screen of the instructor's computer during computer presentation. It would mean that two full video tracks and one audo track are being included in the file, increasing its size by quite a bit. But, we can get pretty clever with the quality settings to achieve a balance between quality and file size that will work with our quality needs and storage limitations. It would be a nice addition.
Thanks!-
I end up taking my Camtasia videos and bringing them into another program for final finishing because the editing interface in Camtasia is a bit clunky. 2 Video tracks would be a totally great addition!!!
ALSO Related....The timeline cursor also needs fixing...there is too little of a grabbing area to grab it...I have to grab it in a tiny little space up in the time marker area...make grabbing it and dragging it also be in the timeline as well so I can easily grab it onto it. And especially... put a modifier key on the ability to split the green and red parts...having it split up on me by default drives me crazy. Every time I go to grab the timeline cursor...it turns green and red on me when I just want to cut or scrub. Id love to be able to drag the cursor around easily and have the audio playback follow it as it scrubs too if possible. Its really hard to get into the middle of two words and edit without at least the audio following the timeline cursor live. I cant be going up to the play button in the video preview window to pause and play...have that be a toggle of the spacebar. Otherwise I love Camtasia -

It would also be great if the second video track allowed movement on the "z" axis to allow an instructor or presenter to stand next to the presentation ala "Screenflow" for Mac.
-
-
I second Ron's request for being able to reposition additional video tracks. In much the same way I'd like to be able to load in a 4:3 clip to a 16:9 project and sit it on the side of the screen with a small PiP in the rest of the space so that it does not overlay the 4:3 video.
With perhaps another video track in the space below the PiP.
Compositing in short. -
-
I would like to put two videos side by side for interview videos like those from http://mixergy.com/ (he uses screenflow to do this and they make it simple as pie).
-
-
Custom produce the project with PIP content using CS 7's classic controller with side-by-side PIP; one person is the PIP, the other the main video. set PIP/main video sizes the same dimensions.
-
-
One reason I would love to see multiple tracks, is for complicated titles. titles on top of the video tracks. Also would be nice to have motion editing for title spins fades etc

Yuriy, I just added a PIP over an existing video track, and I could also add callouts on top of that section.
-
-
Saronproperties, just a suggestion if I understand what your asking, at the moment I create animated gifs and .png`s in photoshop and illustrator and import them into the library, then overlay them onto the video track.
if you use those softwares? but I can understand why you wouldnt want to (their pricey, lots of extra learning) if you could do it in camtasia , add a basic motion spline and animate features of text like size, rotation, colour, speed along a motion spline (path). that would be great.
if your using flash animation (SWF, FLV), I believe you would have recorded the flash animation with camtasia right? coz you cannot import a raw flash animation file (SWF). Once you import the "recorded flash animation" you would import a .png file of the text you want and simply drag it onto the CALLOUT row on the time line. you can then animate its fade in / out variables. -
-
-
-
I don't like PIP period. Kayakman pushes PIP and although it has its uses, it is not the cure all for additional tracks. I, like Yuriy, can see using it for titles and special effects. I love this product and push it real hard to other agencies that need a good editing and screen capture tool. It just needs a little more versatility.
-
-
Additional tracks would be nice. I would also like to be able to move around the PiP track(s) or video tracks similar to pan-and-zoom.
-
-
Yes I would like Camtasia studio to become more like other video editors regarding multiple video tracks., this is somthing I would regard as worth paying for a upgrade for.
-
-
Multipe Video Tracks: When this has already been in MAC version, what stops the implementation in Windows?
-
-
I have not found another app that has Camtasia Studio features, so it only makes sence to add the ones that other apps do have to make it more professional for video editing. Techsmith can always make a pro version for users who need it.

Lately, I've been using Camtasia Studio v7.1.1 for HD video projects editing on win7 instead of firing up my high-end Vegas video sw. I agree with all the thoughts posted above and want to add that multiple vid tracks would be awesome.
I'd also like to request a few items so I can stay in camtasia and again not fire up vegas.
- fade in/out capability on video splits. My workaround is to add callouts of black images and fade those. That's a lot of work to apply but thankfully copy/paste is available :)
- videos crossfading. This occurs by overlapping two video segments. It common to vegas and other editors.
- adding images/stills as callouts with aspect ratio (thought that was there in older versions.
- callouts that can move directionally across screen e.g. rolling screen credits, text slides in but then fades out. I tend to use Powerpoint for this, camtasia it and insert as a clip.
- relocking audio to video track(s). and lock other audio tracks with video 1, audio 1.
- mute tracks: sometimes I experiment with audio sound bytes on different tracks and want to see which track sounds better with audio 1.
I can share a sample of my latest (quick video for a friend) for anyone that would like to see it. It's a montage of video, stills, recording ppt animation, callouts and music. Just search Youtube for "Rapha Sharona" - there are two so watch the 10min version (has credits at end).-
I can`t find your video on youtube, but regards adding image stills as call outs with aspect ratio, can you not do this already?
I import images into the library to the size I want and drag them to the callout time line, then adjust their fade in and out properties... not sure if this is what you were wanting.
I like your suggestions, I agree the fade to black and white and cross fading would add some gentle artistic choices to editing.
quote "callouts that can move directionally across screen e.g. rolling screen credits, text slides in but then fades out."
again the option of animating any image or call out, or text along a motion path with animateable elements like, colour, size, rotation, speed along motion spline would solve this, then editing its fade in fade out and transparency properties. Would be a great edition. -

I forgot to add one more xmas list enhancement request: EDIT markers
Would love to insert an "EDIT" marker while recording from within PPT or standalone camtasia to denote places where I'll need to edit out some mistakes. My workaround now is to press F8 hot key a 3x in the Standalone recorder. There is no such capability in recording from PPT. workaround there is to cough or something to make a big audio spike :) I sometimes pause the video to note the time if it's visible.
EDIT marker Shape and color should be different than the current Marker.
Would this be helpful to anyone else or do you have another take on this?- view 1 more comment

in the effects menu there is an add system stamp and add caption, there is also on the "effects" tab of the recorder an EDIT MARKER button, to add marker as you go, would this help?

Being able to mute audio tracks would be really helpful.
I record separate high quality audio and bring that in. I need to line up with original audio, but want to turn original off and on to check.
Plus having at least one more audio track. So 4+. For music, sound effects, etc.
Thanks!

you can do this on all multiple audio tracks.
-
-
when selecting the audio track you can click the audio tab, then use the sliders on either side of the time line slider to select a section of audio, and click the SILENCE button in the audio tab to mute that area of audio.
again to remove the mute simply double click the audio track and right click the audio points at either end of the mute and choose remove audio point. -

I am amazed at some of the responses to this subject. It's NOT about multiple audio tracks - its about multiple video tracks.
I've been on the road shooting video of presidential candidate events. I use the house video feed for the audio track and the straight on shot. With that I have two other video camerass working different sides of the stage to get profile shots of the candidate speaking and of the audience reacting.
The point is simply to use the one audio track and to be able to blend in different video angles when they are better (more human) and audience video when the reaction is moving.
NONE of this is possible with Camtasia.
Then I read above that Camtasia has a version that does this for a Mac!
I guess that means fo do really professional work I need to get a Mac and Final Cut Pro - enough of these silly excuses!-
Strongly agree with you John

Simple.
We need more Video Tracks
Why is this available for the MAC and not for the PC version??
We have purchased Master Suite CS5.5 simply for Premiere Pro and the other Adobe software work flow integration.
This way I can overlay multiple tracks.
I now only use Camstasia Studio to create the Screencaptures. -

+1 for more video. Scenario that I run into. Spend a day doing keyframes and highlights and then decide to re:record the video at higher resolution. I can find no way to switch out the multiple small videos on the timeline for one re-recorded video that matches at higher resolution. Now I have to go back redo all the edits, highlights, fades and zooms, unless I'm missing something.
-
-
Even the ability to swap out one video clip for another while retaining all of the edits, fades, zooms, etc. would be a huge step in the right direction.
-
You can swap out a video while retaining all its edits and things like callouts, etc., by using this workaround ...
For the clip you want to swap, make note of its file name, folder location, and exact durration to the second [including frames].
Save project, add it to Library just in case, then close the project; close CS.
Record your new clip;
give it the exact name as the original clip it is to replace, saving it in a different directory than the original;
if necessary, edit it in CS to trim its length to the exact length [to the frame] as the original, then produce it as an AVI using exact name as original to be replaced;
copy the new [edited?] clip to clipboard,
then navigate to folder containing original project clip file; paste over original;
reload original project in a new instance of CS and the new clip and all original edits will be in place.
I use this method constantly to update tightly edited legacy projects with fresh content [any clip:video, image, audio]; for me, works great. -

you can do basic ease in and ease out in camtasia for mac, but not in windows version, it is under consideration for camtasia at the moment, animation of callouts etc, along a motion path with ease in and out controls (like flash)...
meanwhile if you want to simulate this you would either do step by step frame to frame animation by moving and adjusting the same call out along the time line, or do an animation in powerpoint, but that doesnt give you .png file transparency to animate over your video if creating an animated output from powerpoint -
-
You can actually do acceptable, simple animations now in the windows version using step frame position agjustments; but takes some time and dicipline.
See this example I did several ago [while experimenting with making cartoons with CS] ...
http://cookbookplus.com/videos/TimeVa...
There are animation examples all throughout this video.
For a good example, let the file fully download, then watch the TOC item "My Day Catching And Salting Fish" [at about 42 min 26 sec].
Here, all the images were captured by Snagit and saved with transparent backgrounds; then imported into CS and used as image callouts.
I found that a callout that was 3 frames long gave acceptable results for smooth motion when produced at 15 FPS. Changing the callout size can simulate perspective.
Perhaps give this technique a try? -
-

-
Yes, I would need 2 simultaneous videos as well for PiP videos. This can be done already by using the PiP track but for the PiP track Zoom&Pan / Crop isn't available.
An automatic/semiautomatic syncing of the 2 videos over their respective soundtracks would be perfect (if Camtasia Studio would help with a "magnetic" property of the second clip which would "snap" in place when dragged left/right on the timeline and the software detects matching waveforms in main and secondary clips). -
-
i`m looking for a split screen effect, not so much PiP,
so split vertically or horizontally as the 2 options,
so I can do a fullscreen recording, and then isolate and crop out 2 areas of the screen that would show one crop on the left side of the screen, and another crop on the right side.
This way its as easy as just do a fullscreen recording, then creating 2 cropped areas, say for a 3D modelling demonstration tutorial,
one crop shows the model being worked on close up to the splines and nodes being manipulated,
the other crop shows the dialogue box and settings I am adjusting as I go,
This way I dont have to keep zooming and panning from the close up model being worked on back to different dialogue boxes,
I can simply place 2 zoom areas in a fullscreen recording of the GUI, with a "zoom (crop) callout", and assign the 2 zoom crops to either a Y axis screen split, or the above/below X axis split.
This way my viewer has close ups of the modelling in progress (or digital painting) and a clear view of the dialogue box being used, since in any modelling or painting process you will move between several dialogue boxes for brushes, tools, colours, and other settings. -
-
A workaround for this now is to produce flash with side-by-side PIP, then use multiple cascade productions to add embedded PIPs.
I made this simple example 2 years ago do demonstrate; it is a side-by-side with no TOC [none showing per setting using Camtasia Theater] and 8 additional embedded PIPs; I took a shortcut and just made 1 video with 4 embedded PIPs, then used for both sides; but it shows what's possible ...

Just wondering when your going to publish your first ebook on amazon for camtasia "the missing manual", or perhaps part of the "how to cheat in flash" series but for camtasia. ;)
Kayakman, if I want to split the screen, and have different video streams playing on each side of the split, is this possible?
Another words, I`m zoomed into 2 different parts of the screen, and those 2 cropped zooms are each playing in their own window side by side fullscreen.
If the aspect ratio is not the same then the outer areas are filled with black or a colour of choice.
cheers, -
-
Regarding ...
"if I want to split the screen, and have different video streams playing on each side of the split, is this possible?" ...
Not that I've [yet] figured out; but the technique described in the previous post works very well; just requires more work.
You can solve the different aspect thing by first producing zoomed sections as AVI with a prefered background color, set to a common production dimension.
Regarding a "how to cheat in flash" series" ...
I do a lot of [mostly for internal use] "shot from the hip" screencast tutorials that I can refere back to when I need to solve the same problem again; sometimes, it's a long, long time between running into the same issue, and [for me] it's easy to forget all the steps of a specific [workaround] solution.
I keep all these one-off tutorials in a little collection that I can get to quickly; you are welcome to view them at ...
http://www.cookbookplus.com/TechSmith...
Nothing like an eBook, but, for me, it beats a blank.-
thanks for sharing Kayakman, very kind.

Splitting the screen and putting separate videos on the left and on the right, as seen on Mixergy.com and http://www.therisetothetop.com/. It's something Camtasia can do, at least not well. It can be semi-faked using the PIP, I think. This is one area where Screenflow for the MAC excels.
-
-
And yes, this is the one feature where I might have to buy a MAC and ScreenFlow to get what I want.

Three months before I bought CAMTASIA STUDIO 7. Now the new release has the option. Not FAIR. Is it possible to upgrade my license?
-

Finally, a company that actually listens to its customers.
We tend to complain a lot when we don't get the functionality we require.
When a company actually takes on board customers suggestions and implements them, then we also need to acknowledge this.
Excellent work. -
-
When I got my first license last year, this enhancement request has been already in discussion. As a customer our surprise is that when it is available in MAC why not in WINDOWS. Techsmith employee replied that it would be fixed in the next update. Based on this reply we decided to go for another LICENSE which we bought just three months ago. so...not complaining, but why it is in a new release rather than an update the exisiting one? If we were informed that it would be only available in camtasia 8, then we would not have bought the new license and would have waited....as simple as that.

Hi Siva,
I'm really sorry. Hopefully we can get you on the new version. Here are a couple options:
- It is our policy that if you purchase a product and a major release comes out within 30 days, you get the new version for free.
- If you have an active maintenance plan (described here: https://store.techsmith.com/maintenan... ), upgrades to major versions are free.
- You can contact Customer Support or I can get them in touch with you: +1.517.381.2300 or Toll Free 800.517.3001 (U.S. & Canada Only)
We really felt that with all that is new in this release, it deserves to be considered a major release. http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia-wha... -

For efficiency in video editing I do multiple recordings to create software tutorials, I don`t know what sequence or what part of what recording I`m going to end up using in the final edit.
This is where the efficiency and flexibility of multiple tracks allows me to compare and shift video footage back and forth over the time lines of each track, until I have what I like in sequence and progression,
i`ll end up cutting different parts out of different videos, then merge into the final edit as one. You cannot do this experimental editing in camtasia to quickly align and compare multiple tracks to decide which parts of which recordings turned out best by immediate side by side comparison.
You end up having to visualize without comparing other tracks in real time and thats a very slow way to work today.
If I choose to do this fast multi track editing in another editor I end up having to save as AVI which loses all my camrec information so thats not feasable, and why not do it in camtasia.
i`m in favour 3 to 4 tracks.
I can assure you we haven't lost sight of these requests. Adding more tracks isn't as simple as it might seem on the surface. Stay tuned. We'll have more to announce soon. That's all the details I can share for now.
