Camtasia Studio 8: Problem opening older project

I made a copy of an existing project and tried to open it. When I do, it gives me the information about the program making a copy for backup etc and I click OK. I then get a message that says

Unable to upgrade project. To upgrade a project, a backup file must first be created. Please try again and choose a different name and location for the backup project file.

But I've not gone through any dialog box that would offer me any choices.

    It gets worse...

    F*** You Very Much, TechSmith!

TechSmith lied when they said you can install Camtasia 7 and Camtasia 8 on the same computer - that they don't share any files - that it is no problem to run them both or to un-install Camtasia 8.

Like others here who have massive libraries of Camtasia 7 videos that cannot open in Camtasia 8, I asked TechSmith to refund my money for Camtasia 8.

They did. I uninstalled Camtasia 8 from my computer.

Today, I needed to add make some updates to a client's video from last year. I needed to add 1 new slides from Powerpoint (I use the PowerPoint plugin to do that).

    Guess what?

The PowerPoint Plugin no longer works (yes, the one I have used for years and years and years).

I started thinking that uninstalling Camtasia 8 broke it.

After trying various attempts at fixing it (none of which worked), I tried downloading and installing a trial version of Camtasia 8 to prove my theory that the uninstall of Camtasia 8 was the culprit.

    Guess what?

The PowerPoint plugin suddenly worked again.

Only one problem.... Any recordings in PowerPoint now only open Camtasia 8 and start a new "video" instead of being opened in my current project in Camtasia 7.

(I am working in Camtasia 7 with an open project. PowerPoint recordings don't care - they open the closed Camtasia 8 software and start a new project.)

That is clear proof that installing Camtasia 8 WILL override files from Camtasia 7 and you will no longer have access to them.

Camtasia is forcing me to open any PowerPoint plugins in Camtasia 8 - which, is worthless to me since Camtasia 8 can not open or edit the Camtasia 7 videos I am working on.

TechSmith has now broken my PowerPoint Plugin for Camtasia 7.

(Remember, how many times their "tech support" people have said in here "it is no problem you can install Camtasia 8 and Camtasia 7 on the same computer - they don't share any files.... )

This has to be the worst ever new release of an established piece of software I have ever seen.

    Total. Piece. Of. Crap.

I don't care if it works better for a brand-new video. If it can't open files from the latest version, it is worthless.

When uninstalling it, breaks your other version.... it is now not just worthless (meaning it doesn't add value) - it is actually harmful (meaning it hurts you).

I am so pissed at TechSmith.

    ============================================
DO NOT INSTALL CAMTASIA 8 ON YOUR COMPUTER!
    ============================================

    | | | |
    V V V V

You will not be able to open Camtasia 7 files and when you try to uninstall Camtasia 8 to get your refund, it will break Camtasia 7!

FYI - Since this debacle, I have been testing both Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline. I am very impressed. 10 years ago when I started using Camtasia - it was the only game in town. I got lazy and just used it for years because I knew it inside and out.

I will not be using Camtasia moving forward on new projects because I don't trust them to care about me and my business at all. They completely screwed all of us who have real businesses that depend on being able to open and edit a project for a client several years later.

They made a decision that Camtasia 8 did not need to open files from Camtasia 7. This is not a "edge case" scenario that they "missed" in testing (what a lot of crap that explanation was). If it was an "edge case", it wouldn't happen on every video.

They thought they had a fancy new codec that was so cool - so much better than what they had before - no one would care that it wouldn't work with any projects from before.

But, I need to keep supporting the clients who I made videos for in the past. I need to be able to edit or update them. I need to be able to create a new one that has the same exact look so it fits in the series.

And, I REALLY need the software I have already paid for - Camtasia 7 - to be able to keep working with all the videos made it to support all those past projects.

Now, they can't even keep Camtasia 7 from breaking if you try their Camtasia 8?

Camtasia 8 broke my Camtasia 7.

Got an answer for that TechSmith?

    • YES, BUT AUTOCAD 9 IS VERY, VERY OLD, AND AUTOCAD 2013 IS THE TOP OF THE NEW...AND YOU STILL CAN OPEN THE AUTOCAD 9 FILES IN AUTOCAD 2013...THAT IS GROW, THE CAMSTASIA IS BOTHER THE PEOPLE WHO TRUSTED THEM....
    • Because they have not reworked Autocad, it uses the same engine, do not classify CS8 which moved to html5, its a completely different situation from the CS8 upgrade. I think you will need to pull your head in and download to be smiling again, friend, you better quit now with the posts till you upgrade. R

I was just about to upgrade to CS8, but I'm extremely worried now after reading about all the problems people are having with not being able to open old projects in CS8.

Like others on this thread, I am a professional using this product with hundreds of videos I have created on CS7 that I will need to use and edit on CS8.

This really should be the number one requirement for any upgrades techsmith produces for their software, and this should be so obvious that CS8 should never have been released until previous versions opened perfectly with no problems. It should never have got to the stage of releasing it only to find so many customers unhappy.

987ray, can you please shed some light on your recent post:

"Yay, we are about to get an upgrade that fixes this and many other problems.

    THEY DID IT

    Y A Y ! ! ! ! ! ! !"

Do you have the upgrade, and if not when is this new version being released to the public so I can move forward and upgrade to CS8.

    Thanks

@jramos077: I'm sorry to hear of your troubles.

If you previously entered a key into Camtasia Studio 8, it should have been saved to the file: C:\ProgramData\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio 8\RegInfo.ini

You should be able to download the trial of the latest version, enter your key, and it should show up registered.

      Hope this helps.

  • J, I recommend you try out CS8's 30 day free demo.

So far, I've upgraded over a thousand CS7 archived projects to CS8; for the vast majority of cases, those process were successful. I sometimes had to take different approaches [CS7 libzips to CS7 zips to CS8 upgrade, or cut out a short start sequence [in CS7] with callouts near t=0, or sometimes first chop up the CS7 project in CS7 into several smaller chunks; but for the most part, one way or the other, the upgrades were successful.

In the few instances where I could not get an upgrade to work [usually the projects were just too large and complex], I simply made AVIs from the CS7 archive, and rebuilt the project in CS8 [a very quick process compared to CS7].

Upgraded projects are much more demanding, memory wise, compared to the same project built natively in CS8, so breaking big projects down first can be a big help.

Again, I encourage you to take CS8 for a test drive; its many new editor capabilities greatly streamline screencasting workflows.

The problem has been fixed and will be resolved in the next update, 8.0.2.
I was fortunate enough to call and received a link to download the update manually.

Here is one particular video that I wanted to update, it was created a few months ago in CS7

    http://training.edumate.com.au/moodle...

Initially I could not open this or almost all of my video created over the last two years.

I then applied the update to 8.0.2, I opened it from the saved zip.

    Here is the result.

I know this thread is old, but in my experience in upgrading to camtasia 8 is that the difference in the codec that camtasia 8 used compared to camtasia 7. download this codec http://techsmith.custhelp.com/ci/fatt..., and install and your project that has been created in camtasia 8 will run in camtasia 7.

    Hope this resolve the issue.

I have 8.02 and this is still a problem for me. What should I do now?
    • I'd recommend logging in a case with TechSmith support.

FYI, since upgrading to 8.0.2, every CS7 project I've tried has upgraded successfully.

However, because many of my CS7 projects are large and complex [many callouts, transitions, etc.], some would not load after successfully converting. This has been traced to memory limitations on my 2 GB RAM PC.

In those few cases, it was necessary to reload the CS7 project in CS7, and simplify the project [either break it up into several smaller projects, or, if the timeline objects were not needed in CS8, just produce to AVI in CS7].

But in the end, every project has, one way or the other, been migrated to CS8.

Again, TechSupport would probably be your best solution, not knowing all the specific details about your project.
    • FYI - 2G? Get more RAM (cheap fix)

I admit that there have been a lot of changes and problems with Camtasia 8. I have logged more than enough tickets and calls from the UK to the US are expensive and can only be done in the afternoon here - I have my own 'camtasia clock' on my desktop so I know exactly when to call.

The main problem was rendering a video in the first place - however every time I have gone (whining!) to TechSmith with a problem, it has always been resolved. It's not always the Software that's the problem, it could be the user.

It was a bit of a rocky start with Camtasia 8 - it should have been released later once fully tested as I am still coming across major problems which means I have to re-render the 150 videos I have already created on Camtasia 8 at some point which makes me sigh.

As exciting as it was to have a new version of Camtasia to play with - I think I may wait before upgrading next time so they have time to iron out all the major bugs people are experiencing.

I spend 7 hours a day using this piece of kit - it's getting easier to use and after the updates they have produced, I would recommend it to others. Of course it's going to have bugs - I think we expect too much!

    • Thanks, the video was made in CS8 with captions underneath, you do not have to produce double dear, just one of me will do.

I hope you do not mind me trying to be a smahrt ahrse but in CS7 captions could be turned off too..

When a H link is created as a call out, and we go to advanced mode for callouts, you will notice that h-linking and hotspot must be at least two second long to activate, this is specified. It is to allow the script to run. Also, make sure all h-links open a new screen :P

Yes, I like to update. But in reality, its the skill we have to seduce and hold, nothing gratuitous, presumptive or lame, just good ol'-fashioned how-to. One last thing, I teach school teaches, have thousands of them, so they need hand feeding, bad students... hehe, they hate PD. End result is must give them TOC and captions, and the music has to be exactly the right type and at the right level.

Have produced too many of these video but one thing I love is reaching people and it burns me out, I get picky at little things that hold the flow, like copying a pan. That said, I agree with you that CS is easy and fast, however, the captions and marker points are a bugger. Also, we must remember that the team who made this software are a bunch of clever dads, so there is a lot of heart behind it, and what it does do well is deliver punchy, effective learning.

Please also consider the buffer time. If your video are large (memory) you may loose smart phone and slower connection type users due to pre-loading, its in the production settings, which can be edited. Check the buffer time prior to producing. I say this because you sound like your making video in excess of 20+ mb.

Now about the finger, I guess, I will take whatever your willing to give.

Bishops, nuns, just please no more mormons, I mean who wears a tie on Saturday arvo and walks up to your door....? Well, in hindsight, I guess I would, and yes, I would be trying to lead you to enlightenment......
    • Haha I knew you would bring that up! Yes I am fully aware of them being turned on an turned off - it didn't fit in with our website at the time and also we had customers who either wanted the captions burned on to the video or didn't want them at all. Also I think I remember it affecting the full screen capabilities too. It was just what our customers wanted at the time.

So the H link callouts must be created to open a new window to work on the iPhone/iPad/fullscreen? That's strange... why is that? I will check what I have selected but I think that is what I have anyway.

I do like CS 8 which is why I am hesitating to move away from it. I appreciate the team behind it.

I aim to keep the video below 20mb - however that isn't always possible when getting the footage that you want to show. Sometimes there are just things you don't need the viewer to see.

The problem that Camtasia haven't really quite perfected yet is that people use CS for completely different things. Look at our videos for example - they are completely different and we use it in different ways. I know that there are 1000 ways that you could use CS - it could just be a little 'wider'. Especially with the new zooms in 8!

Skip the finger I'll have a simple G&T ;) (large)

Thanks for the chat today - been very helpful and enlightening! I do love a good forum.

Our videos are full screen - just the demo ones on the website have been shrunk by our marketing to fit on the page. There is an option on to allow to full screen - the play bar on the subscribed videos also allow this. Most computer screens are within the 1280 x 720 fit round here too so it's not too bad!

Oh yes we have come across that problem with the captions in Camtasia 8. It's one of the first things I rang up about. With our captioned videos in Camtasia 7, we had them underneath and had no choice but to sell as a separate product due to the fact that if they were on the video then that cut out a good part of the screen.

With the videos in 8 however there is the option to turn the captions on or off which then leaves it down to the viewer. This is a great idea but only if you have the right audience. Luckily we do, it's a little hard to read captions and watch the screen at the same time.

I have watched your sample - I suppose my sample was a bit of a bad one to send over! I'll see if I can get something better that's produced in 8.
Some of our links in the videos are lower thirds throughout the whole video (we do teaser videos linking you to the full video) and they still don't work on the iPad or in full screen on a PC. Why do you say they need to be at least 2 seconds long? Without forums like this then I wouldn't know all these little tricks.

I would love to move our video editing to a Mac - however it's not my decision. It currently works OK on Windows 7 but it's really not the best I have ever used. It's damn easy to use though, compared to Adobe After Effects. I would use Adobe but I don't need most of the complexities involved, just simple clean editing, chopping it all up and throwing it together.

Will you be using Windows 8 once released? I am hugely nervous about using Cam 8 - I can see the release date of 8 will be all systems go on the phone to TechSmith!

    Hahaha a Stella - don't you mean a (disgusting) fosters? ;) I'll have a lovely Bishops Finger instead :)

Here you may find some tips for setting up Microsoft Windows speech engine correctly to get better speech-to-text results:
    http://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmi...

Note if the voice in a project is from other people, you may have him send you his speech engine training profile, you can then install that profile and transcribe the voice (see the link above for how to manage the speech engine training profiles).

Of course you can also port over the transcribed captions across projects/computers through a file (eg: SAMI file etc).

    Hope this helps,

I appreciate this word on alternate speech profiles very much, but I ran into a snag downloading the tool mentioned for managing speech profiles. Wanted to pass the info along for what it s worth.

I was using Chrome, and during the MS legal-copy validation process (requires a code that is given after a little executable verifies you have a legal install of Windows) got a note that that version of the Windows validator is no longer valid. (MS hasn't updated it, apparently....).

I opened the link with IE, therefore, and found that the above process is an alternate validation path that is made available for folks who are not using IE. IE also requires the installation of a little validation routine....and I intentionally use a Windows profile that is not allowed to install anything when I am researching...:)

So while I have not actually validated and installed the tool yet because I have to log off my current non-admin no-installs profile to do it, I would suggest using IE as the browser and an account with admin privileges to boot, so that you will be able to install the IE validation plugin and the speech profile tool.

No news will be good news (nothing further from me will mean IE and admin privileges did the trick).

    Cheers.

    • John,
Open the project in Camtasia 7..1
      Export it to Zip.

Then drag the Zip into CS8
CS8 will unpack back up and convert.
It will then upgrade the project.

I am using a quad core 4g ram on 7 X 64 with a dedicated graphics card with 1 gig ram - A six min project takes 1 min to open from zip.

You may need to allow for your processor and graphics card speed.

Once open you will have to refine.

hey, i've got the same problem and updated to 8.0.2
    The advise:

"Open the project in Camtasia 7..1
    Export it to Zip.

Then drag the Zip into CS8
CS8 will unpack back up and convert.
It will then upgrade the project. "

still does not work for me with 8.0.2 for many projects, most of them were created in V6 (i already tried to open the V6 version and the V7 version, both did not work)

They are not big (only a few minutes long with 1280x800 resolution), and it is a quad core computer with 16 GB of RAM. Much bigger projects could be updated, even without the Zip/Import/Export procedure.

So what else can I do? Thanks for any help!

Have to admit...I agree that they should have waited to release. We have had serious issues rendering and making "ghost" videos. Why cant we delete sections of video now with delete button? Have to use scissors icon? Compatibility issues. Really been frustrating and expensive since we are wasting so much time. Will look into other options now. Like how much they are charging too. Hey...its the American Dream to get rich quick. At least offer quality for the price. Lost a customer.

  • Thanks for your post Sharon. I'm assuming 8.0.2 did not fix your upgrade issue? 8.0.3 has additional upgrade issues addressed that we know about to date. Believe me, we take project upgrading very seriously, and we test significantly for this case. The problem is that it is impossible for us to test every potential way a project could be put together, what is included in that project, etc. I am not trying to make excuses for the upgrade issues customers have experienced. From your perspective, it is irrelevant what we have done because there is still an issue in your case. We hate that.

We do provide free technical support, and have been working with customers who have issues upgrading. The development team has been fixing the issues that we are able to pinpoint in the failing projects that our customers have shared through technical support. Thank you to all of you who have shared them, because this enables us to fix your project, as well as put fixes in for others who are experiencing the same issue.

We will release 8.0.3 soon that will include many project upgrade fixes as well as additional enhancements based on customer feedback. Please keep sharing your feedback with us so we can continue to improve Camtasia Studio 8.

But many of the 29 projects still do not convert at all. I have created another support request now.... Hope I can upgrade my projects soon :-(

I just upgraded to 8.0.3 and I still can't open a project I created in Camtasia 7. PLEASE make this a top priority. I have MULTIPLE video projects that have been completely arrested due to this "flaw". I'm an educator who puts videos up online for my students, and now I can't. Am I supposed to REMAKE THESE VIDEOS just so I can finish the project?

    PLEASE HELP!

Hi I'm using V7 since november but now I must make a choice. Please I want an true opinion because what I see is really doutful. Is it a good version or no ? is it trully impossible to work with older video?
    • Not impossible.
You save the version 7 as a zip and drag the zip into cs8.
      its that simple.

The next release will be 8.4 and its due soon, 8.3 was great because it allowed for unparallelled handling of the content and the best drop in scenario.
This is the ability to cut a time line straight through the captions and easily move everything to the right.

I looked around and found no screen recording app that comes close.

I have just purchased a retina Mac pro and may have to default back to PC to work on my earlier projects. Using Bootcamp on my Mac I may be able to work cross platform.

My thoughts are that on a pc this is the best software.
On a Mac the software is also very good but you can not share a project from Mac to PC. As such, one may be committed to PC Camtasia for the best results.

One great feature is speech to text, which is not offered in Mac. this is an awsome time saver if you intend to us captions.

You will not find a better application out there for screen recording and the ability to open older projects was resolved in 8.2, it is now almost 8.4

      Ray,
    • Thank you Ray for your answer,

I'll finish all what I need to do before try V8 (i'm near deadline so I think it's the better choice). I bought today the licence so I will up to date v8 from v7 in a few weeks.

    Hi,
My PC is installed with V8.04 and my colleagues are working with V7. I can't share projects with them, it pops-up with an error on their PC's saying it is impossible to import newer versions to version 7.

Please help me and tell what should I do ?!@?!
    Thanks,

    Alon

  • it has never been possible for older versions of Camtasia Studio to open project files created with newer versions; this is characteristic of many software programs

perhaps describe what your colleges need to do with project?

easiest [best] solution is to have them all upgrade to CS 8.0.4, or you could go back to working with CS 7

But there are some possible partial workarounds, but we need descriptive details

We've released an 8.0.4 udpate which addresses some problems with opening certain saved projects, including those where the source files have been moved or changed since the last time the project was opened. This is a recommended update for all Camtasia Studio 8 users.

Here's the steps to apply the update:
    1. Use the Help > Check for updates menu to get a link to the download.
    2. Click the download link to begin the download.
    3. Once the download completes, close Camtasia Studio and run the setup EXE. Note: you do not need to uninstall your current version prior to running the setup.

Please let us know if you experience any problems.

I'm running version 8.0.4 and I'm experiencing the same problem. I get the dialog boxes to find the missing source files, but after selecting all of those I get the same error message that says

Unable to upgrade project. To upgrade a project, a backup file must first be created. Please try again and choose a different name and location for the backup project file.

    Any ideas?

I just installed the latest version of CS8. It converts the video portion of my CS5 projects, but not the audio. Any fix? I see where this is not a new problem, as it showed up when you went from 5 to 6. Tried that. Still no audio.

  • still have CS5; if so, in CS5, export the audio as a wav. then import the wav into the CS8 project

also, I seem to remember this happening occasionally; after import, a converted CS5 project seemed to have no audio

what I did [I believe] was save the project, close CS, relaunch, and load the saved converted project; audio then reappeared in project; maybe try that too?
    • Thanks. The "saving the file" seems to have done the trick, but with a twist. I had to go through cs6 first. What I did was convert my cs5 project to cs6, then save the cs6 file under a new name. I then brought the cs6 project into cs8 and the audio was there. I first tried going straight from v5 to v8, but this did not bring the audio along, even after saving and reopening. Still, I'm glad to not have lost about a thousand hours of editing over the years.
    • if you have productions from your earlier projects, you can always use that media to start a new project in latest CS version. The individual objects will be burned in, but it can prevent a total loss. I always produce to embedded flash, and zip archive as well; that way, I can always recover any captions, TOC, and hotspot data, plus end action stuff [in the config.xml], while using the MP4 to go at it again.

    Hi...
I have been Camtasia user since CS5 ..

I have just downloaded new CS8 trial version 8.0.4.(on win7). Looks great, has lots of great options, love new design.
But what good is it to me if I cant open .camproj files made in CS7 (on win XP)?

To make things worse. There are some project that want to backup and then open and there are some that don't want to backup so I cant open them at all.

I have noticed (wrongly maybe) that it is related to a title clips from library that I was using in CS7. Altho even if I delete all the files used in the project related to anything in library and save project as a new one , it still wont open in CS8.

This is very big issue for me as I have large number of project made in CS7.

    My way:
    1. Backup CS7 library folder (in C:\ProgramData\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\ )
    2. uninstall CS7
    3. install CS8
    4. copy backup CS7 library folder to C:\ProgramData\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\

    PS.
1.The library folder of CS8 is new named as "Library 2.0"
2.You can also keep the CS7 library when uninstall CS7
