How do you paste Snagit captures into Gmail?
When I copy an image to the clipboard in the snagit editor, the image fails to paste into google gmail. Gmail gets a white box and no image. If I use another screen capture utility (like the windows snipping tool) the capture pastes correctly. I have a feeling snagit is copying to the clipboard in PNG or BITMAP format and I cannot find a place to change this to JPEG or something else that is more email friendly. Please help.

Shane,
Thanks for bumping this old thread. We should have updated it with the last release.
Please try this easier solution. Under the Snagit button (the orb thing in Editor) select this option and try pasting into Gmail. http://screencast.com/t/JZYfZ27oR43N
We put that in there for the main purpose of web-based email restrictions.
Thanks again for posting. Please let me know how it goes.
Sincerely,

1Hello,
So one of our devs go back to me on this.
There is a bit of a tweak some need to make due to transparency "stuff" going on.
Here is how you can get this to work consistently no matter how your have your capture or Editor options configured:
1. In Editor choose the Image tab.
2. Select Modify group > Color Effects > Color Depth
3. Change the color depth from 32-Bit to 24-Bit and close the dialog box.
Pasting the image into Gmail should now work.
I hope this helps solve the mystery.

Hi,
I think the trick / difference here might be saved captures versus captures that have been taken but not saved.
Please open an image that you have saved with a name. It can be PNG, BMP, etc.
Then, paste that into your gmail. It should work.
Thanks for using Snagit!
Kelly
P.S. I'm not sure of the "why" behind this... but maybe one of the Snagit devs can shed some light on this! -

Ok I've done some more research, here's what I discovered.
Saving the file in other formats (jpg, png, etc) and re-opening the image does not make a difference.
Clicking "Copy All" on the ribbon never works. When I paste this, I get a large white sqaure in gmail, the size of the region I copied, but no image.
However, what does make a difference is using the selection tool and selecting a range of the image, then using Right Click-->Copy, when I paste this, it appears in the email.
Whats frustrating about this is I have to freehand the selection square as large as I can to copy it, but I always miss part edges. I want Copy All to work the same way.
I am on windows 7 using Chrome.
I have done more testing and I have found that copy-all does work ok if you select a square region to capture. If you use the "Whole window" option (which grabs the curved transparent edges of the windows form) it does not work. So I am thinking now this has something to do with transparency in the clipboard image.
Thanks! -

This works. I send screenshots to my team a lot and this is great because now I don't have to open outlook - for some reason i can copy paste fine to outlook without doing this but not to gmail!

as a workaround, changing the color depth on the image from 32-bit to 24-bit did the trick... thanks!

changing it also worked for me but it also changes back to 32 bit everytime...is there a way to keep it at 24bit?

Here is another alternative that works for me --
From the tray icon, Input --> Properties
Under the 'general' tab, "The canvas is the area outside the capture":
Change the the Canvas color to white ( it defaults to transparent ). -
-
It appears "Color Depth" and the ability to edit this capture setting has been removed in version 11.
Our company has switched to Gmail. -

Mike,
Dude, ya'll are awesome!! That did the trick. -

This is not doing the trick for me. Could it be because I have the trial version and not paid version, yet?

I use Google mail and docs exclusively anymore, and Snagit constantly. As a consultant, I have recommended Snagit so many times that people think I work for you.
But the problem; how can I copy paste from Snagit directly into a cloud based email or document, so I do not have to save then import? I do not want to have to leave Snagit over this, but I do so many clips that other programs that can do this are starting to look more efficient to me. It would appear that you have had this question before, but have not yet addressed it. Help!

I was able to resolve this issue with SnagIt 11. The option is in a strange place, but once you find it, it does the trick. Here are the exact steps to fix it.
1. Right click the snagit icon and select "Open SnagIt Editor"
2. Locate the blue "orb" in the upper left corner ("the snagit button")
3. Click the orb, and the menu will drop down.
4. At the very bottom of the menu is a button "Editor Options" located right next to "Exit SnagIt Editor", click it.
5. Locate the option "Disable Image Transparency on Clipboard", its mid-way down the screen.
6. Check the box, and click OK.
This should do it! -

Ron,
I tried your fix but it did not work for me. I tried many different fixes ffrom these boards, disable image transparency, change canvas color from transaparent to white(or any other color, selecting a portion of the image and copying, etc.. None of these fixes worked for me on gmail. I finally found what appears to be the best solution so far for g-mail go to settings in g-mail and go to labs and enable insert images. Now you will be able to open image box inline and paste snag it image from clipboard. -

Rick,
What browser are you using? I use chrome, and pressing ^V to paste the image seems to be the way to do it there. I've used opera before and had issues on other sites with pasting images. Haven't tried firefox or internet explorer.
Thanks

Ron,
I am using firefox. Strange thing is the image pastes into an outgoing e-mail in gmail but then is gone in the outbox and does not show up when sent to other gmail accounts. However, it will show up when sent to a yahoo mail account but image is again missing in sent message. I would think this would rule a browser problem out.
Regards,
Rick -
