Search / TOC Box Covers My Video
There is a horrible box that obscures the screen when I try to scrub through a video. Help! How do I make it go away?! It looks like the attached image.
I rely on this for my students, and class starts next week! HELP ME MAKE IT GO AWAY!

We just released version 7.1.1 which is a free upgrade for all Camtasia Studio 7 customers. This version addresses some of the issues as reported here on Get Satisfaction. The easiest way to obtain this version is to click Help > Check for Update in Camtasia Studio.
A full list of improvements can be seen here: http://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmi...

Hello,
Did you by any chance produce your video using the ExpressShow template? Or, did you use the Web production preset?
What you are seeing is a floating Table of Contents. There are several ways to correct this - the most easy is by choosing a different production template.
Please try this:
1. Open your video project in Camtasia Studio.
2. Choose the Produce and Share button at the top of the Camtasia Studio screen.
3. In the Production Wizard choose Custom Settings from the dropdown menu. Click Next.
4. Choose the first option for MP4/FLV/SWF. Click Next.
5. Choose the Overlay Controller from the list. Use the list box to check the options you want included in your video. Click Next
6. Continue with the production wizard until the end.
7. When the production Wizard is finished, go to Screencast.com and sign in.
8. Go to the correct folder and choose Upload Content.
9. Browse to the folder containing the video you just produced. Select the .MP4 video file.
Your video should be good to go.
I hope this helps,

Also, we consider that behavior a bug and it will be changed in the next release. Btw--thanks for the image Susan. It made it really clear as to what you were encountering.

Kelly: I used your Web template. I did nothing to add this to the original camproj or the production options.
Mike: I am very glad to see that you recognize this as a bug. I have created literally dozens of videos to use in my college courses, and now I am concerned that I need to go back and redo them. Please do NOT make the floating TOC a standard part of the web template. It's not what users expect, so we have no way of knowing that we need to go in and turn it off. -

I got the update but was still having the problem. I found this fix to work:
1. Select: Produce and share
2. Select: Custom production settings
3. Select: MP4
4. Controller: classic (this is key step)
5. Theme: classic (also key. Be sure searchability is unchecked)
6. Finish wizard: press “Next” to the end. -

hi,
I had a major problem of not understanding something.
A week ago I created two videos and uploaded them without any problems; copied the email link and the videos streamed great.
Yesterday, I created another video, went through what I thought was the same process, but this time something terrible happened. There was some unwanted popup that appeared whenever I hover the mouse to make the controls appear. It's hugely annoying and I'm probably the one that has caused it to happen, but I can't figure out how I did it or how to stop it.
I don't know what I did differently to cause this happen.
How do I get rid of it? It is very annoying when you don't want something to be there.
http://www.screencast.com/t/BXZvdwA5N (that has the "artifact/popup" when the mouse is hovered)
and a previous video that is fine.

An addition to my topic. After producing the video I had a folder with these files:
expressInstall.swf
FirstFrame.png
Installation.html
Installation.mp4
Installation_controller.swf
swfobject.js
I only uploaded the .mp4 to screencast .com.
I uploaded all of the files to another site and the video performed correctly.
Is the problem, possibly with, screencast? -

Wizard, this is a little hard to explain but I will do my best. I hope you'll bear with me. My colleagues may jump in too.
Even though a video seems like one thing--the video--often there are supporting components that contain information, or, often a controller (player) that allows the viewer to interact in some fashion with the video.
In Camtasia Studio, we have even more--like a Table of Contents, captions, search, and even "flash hotspots" which are like hyperlinks on top of the video.
All those other files you reference are these type of supporting files. Those are essential if you are trying to take advantage of these features on your own website.
Now, let's talk about Screencast.com for a minute. Since TechSmith makes Screencast.com as well as Camtasia Studio, we can tap into functionality contained right in that MP4. Information like the Table of Contents, hotspots, etc. is "burned in" to the MP4 container. Because of this when you upload the MP4 to Screencast.com, Screencast.com recognizes it's from Camtasia Studio and "unleashes" any enhanced functionality.
In this case, from what I can tell, you have no desire for that Table of Contents floating on your video--which makes a lot of sense, because you really didn't make a full Table of Contents.
How are you creating the MP4? When in doubt, I recommend the Custom Production path. Step through it and when you get to a dialog with a bunch of options make sure the Table of Contents is unchecked. This is shown at about the 44 second mark of this video: http://www.techsmith.com/learn/camtas...
I know that's a lot to chew on. I hope it's somewhat helpful. I'll help you get it how you want it!

Mike,
Perfect reply.
You see, I learned a lot of new information. I never knew that mp4 files contained "extra" embedded information that can be picked up by other sources.
I always assumed that mp4's were simply video files with excellent compression.
That answer's a lot of questions and brings my understanding to a new level.
Actually, I did miss something on the video that malfunctioned for me. I did not use the custom options as i had done on the previous two versions.
BTW, I can chew a lot :) thanks again for the detailed, informative response! -

Ok then, is an MP4 a different kind of "Flash" file? Same species as .flv but a different animal?
-
I'd say that's an accurate enough analogy for 95% of humanity. Two further caveats are: 1.) These file formats are more like "containers". They hold a video (see point 2) and possibly other files/information. 2.) All AVIs, MP4, FLVs, MOV,...videos are not all the same. They could have different encode levels, bitrate levels, and any number of other settings. This is one big reason why people get so troubled when one MP4 video might play on their iPad or whatnot but another won't. To a human they "look" the same, but who knows what's really inside.
I thought this wikipedia article was pretty helpful--especially when I was learning about dimensions and what video "standards" were supported by various things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_fo...
Happy reading, and good luck!

Hi,
If you won't be including hotspots, a TOC, etc in your video, you can produce it without all of the extra files. Just choose No Controls as the Controller option in the Custom Production Path's Flash Controller screen.
Good luck and thanks for using Camtasia Studio!

i had a glitch when I used the Produce to Screencast.com. It was on my first video a few weeks ago and it died in the process; twice. So, i went with the other route and uploaded from screencast instead.
I am curious though, because it is not clear exactly how screen cast works and all, the extra files that are created when a project is produced what location are they supposed to be uploaded to?
Suppose I create a folder called cars and i have a chevy video; do I need to create a sub folder in the chevy folder to store all of the files? If I don't it seems that the upper level folder called cars would get cluttered with all of the project files.-
As long as we're talking Screencast.com and the MP4 produced from Camtasia Studio, you don't need to worry about all the extra files. Screencast.com will obtain all the information it needs directly from that MP4 file. It doesn't matter how you get the MP4 to Screencast.com (either via direct from the product or manual upload).
