2Hello,
The datastore is located:
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\TechSmith\SnagIt\DataStore
Vista and Win7: C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\TechSmith\Sn agIt\DataStore
You can also manually back up your datastore from with Snagit:
Backup the DataStore
1. In the Snagit Editor, click the Snagit Button and select Editor Options
2. Switch to Advanced and select Backup / Restore Automatically Stored Files...
3. Select Backup to create an archive of the Unsaved captures in your Library
4. Select a file name, which will have a .snagarchive extension and a location, such as Desktop or My Documents.
I hope this helps!

How can i find the pictures from Snagit without the Programm. With Windows. For example to make a quick copy for security reasons??
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Where are the Pictures on my computer?.-
Thank you! First i don ́t found it with your description. But if you search for DataStore, it can be found. The second Way is perfectly descripted. Both works.
This was very good Information, maybe good also for the Newsletter from Time to Time.
Thank you again. -

I new to this version, but this is the stupidest way to do this. Why can't the user set the location (like in prior versions)? And, I always have a directory for these that automatically backup. So, it should be easier than should deeper subdir (other than the above) -- MAJOR PAIN!!!
-
-
Or, I can't believe that some of you wouldn't realize that the directory of the images needs to be shown somewhere? Right???? There could be a quick click in the Folders navigation window to show where they are located. This is just pure stupidity that something simple and intuitive would not have been discovered in the software development process.
Usually, I don't spout off, but this deserves something said from a "peer" software developer ... -
-
Oh my gosh, this is even STUPIDIER than I thought. Now, they've got their own SNAG format and you can't read the unique identifier.
Who thought of this? I am almost wanting to go back to the prior version, becuase this is just ASININE!!! -
-
And, it's not a PNG or JPG ... and opens SNAGIT viewer. Gosh, I wish I could turn that off.
In my opinion, VERY VERY VERY VERY POOR DESIGN DECISION!!! -
-
Now, why can't move the image from your viewer to a directory????
I am so UNIMPRESSED with this direction. This is just IGNORANT.
I like the tagging. I get that, but this other stuff wasn't thought out. -
-
If it were me, I'd FIRE HALF YOUR DEVELOPMENT STAFF for these poor decisions. I don't think I'm even going to upgrade. I like your EDITOR but what happened to the IMAGE BROWSER? And, why cna't I immediately output it to PNG or JPG. DO NOT LIKE THIS MAJORLY ...
-
-
I am having to reset my prior features and images keep going to the Image Editor. That's okay, but they are not showing up in my desired directory. I still think someone needs to feel this, get kicked in the butt, because alot of this is UNNECESSARY. Unless I am missing the "IMPROVEMENTS" concept, I don't see why some of this was done.
-
-
Agree with Fullerton - the convoluted location and non-standard format forces me to immediately manually save every captured image as a jpg in a 'Snagit' folder I created in My Pictures. Seems pretty straight forward for the Snagit program to do this job for me.(This is basically how Picaso automatically saves collage creations, btw.)

Hello Pete and David,
I know this won't be a great answer, and I'll try to get you some more ideas or an update from support or the developers tomorrow.
I thought I would at least share with you something I've done when I have dozens of images related to a project. It *might* help relieve some pain if I'm understanding correctly.
Basically, I open the Library and I might have them sorted by "Recent captures." I shift or control-click the thumbnails.
Next, I right-click and select the Batch Conversion Wizard. This will let you apply some logic or prefix to the file name as well as convert Snags to JPG, PNG and more. (Image: http://screencast.com/t/uIX2Wvofp )
Note that if you have a video selected, the Batch Conversion option will be disabled.
Unfortunately, my guess is that you want to give the images a unique and logical name, like "save_folder_dialog" and this won't help, so I'm not sure if it really saves time in the end.
I'm afraid that's the best I've got for you at this time, but I'll follow up with the team tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Mike Curtis -

tnx for the quick come back.
Speaking only for myself, as a daily but sporadic user and generally single capture user at a time, that is all a bit much - likely that would be useful for a professional generating volumes of pics.
You understood my simple needs exactly... -
-
Pete, I think you've tried this, or something like this, but check another approach that might work pretty well for your frequent daily use, even if just for a capture or two at a time.
I made a Profile, had it output to File, and had it default to JPG (95% quality). It prompts me for a file name (but you can change that) and you can also prompt for folder or just have it put the image in the folder by default. The key is clicking the "Finish" button if you're in the Editor.
Could this help? I made a 2:30 video of the process: http://screencast.com/t/bwKreFvZm
Sincerely,

Mike,
I hope I didn't sound like a raving lunatic when I spouted off, but that was gut-emotion. I love your software and have used it extensively to write documentation. It is incredible to grab 30 - 50 screenshots and let it auto-name them like "MANUAL REVIEW (#xxxx -- date/month)". Then, I go back later and move them from my save location ("Manual revision 5.1") and walk-thru them manually and rename them.
So, maybe the same functionality is there, once I see the new arrangement of it. I love your software, and I really appreciate the benefits that SnagIt gives me. But, sometimes, it's hard to see how to still be able to use the same functionality when new versions come out.
It just doesn't seem as intuitive as it once was. And, I sure don't want to have to click, select them, batch, etc. I'd go to a different program. I just want screenshots in a driectory that can be used for something else. I get paid for progress, so I can't monkey with click, click, click all day.
Thanks, I'll try your suggestions and get back with you ...
Appreciated,
David Blaine Fullerton -

Hi, I have a question. I too miss the ability to set my location. I looked at your solution and thought OK, I will try this.
Here is a few observations with doing it this way:
1) Once you I setup your profile, you cannot go back to change it or at least I could not find a way to EDIT my new profile.
2) New Profile: I chose to have Snagit "auto" Name the file. I did not get a FINISH button nor did the file save to the location I choose in the profile. It did not work but I could not EDIT the profile.
Question 1: So does this mean we have to setup profiles for every single profile choice that SNAGIT offers? Just to save to a particular folder?
Question 2: Can you do multiple captures with your "NEW" profile and then cilck finish? or do you have to click finish on each individual capture?
Question 3: I see the BACKUP and RESTORE functionality under the EDITOR Options but this is out-of-sight and out-of-mind.. Could you put a button in the ORGANIZER that makes backup easier. You could even give the user the ability to preset a file location of the back up.
Question 4: Why was this removed from this version? I do not store my files on MAIN drive and I do a lot of captures. I want the ability to store my files into another folder or drive. (hmmm maybe I can change the location of snagit captures in the registry.)
Please I am with these gentlemen above: This is so counter-productive to have to SETUP every SNAGIT profile just so you can save your "captures" to a particular folder. We had this before, why remove this functionality. Should we really have to do these work-arounds for functionality we had before?
Please give us back that option . -
-
We redirect user folders to a server-based location and the inability to change the save location causes severe lag in saving, startup, and everything else. It's especially bad over VPN. We have one user with a large amount of stamps and files who has been forced to stop using SnagIt because it's killing her computer performance. Please fix this!

I run Snagit on multiple computers and would like to keep the picture libraries in sync over programs like DropBox. While Snagit insists on a preset directory, I can't do this.
It should be a simple development effort to allow changing the Datastore to a user specified directory via preferences... -
-
I can't believe no one posted the version they're using. I'm using 10.0.0. The file location should be a user configurable file location. If the above discussion is related to a newer version, such as the current 11.1, I'm not upgrading. I can see the captures at this location; C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Local\TechSmith\Snagit\DataStore. I can double-click on any one of them and pull it up in the editor. I'm assuming that I can back up this directory and restore it on a rebuilt computer if necessary.
The manual backup and restore button are fine (10.0) but I need something more automation-ready than that. -

Where can I find the videos and screenshots that are in the Snagit Editor before I've saved them?
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Snagit editor video location?.-
Hey Jim,
This thread should have the answer you need up top. -
-
-
-
-
Once you save something it's moved out of the datastore and placed in the location where they were saved. Where you saved them is the only place to look.
-
-
The previous versions you could tell SNAGIT where to save the files in the EDITOR. This new version you cannot. The work-arounds to SAVE EACH INDIVIDUAL ITEM you screenshot are too time consuming for every screenshot. This makes the SAVING action the most important feature instead of using the TOOL.
Techsmith, Where are your usability studies on your LATEST products? Were there any thoughts on how the consumer used your products? Were there any studies done on the latest ENHANCEMENTS? Had you done testing on your enhancements and what you consumers would have to give up in order to get those enhancements? I tried to move the SNAGIT library to ONE location where I backup my files and I could not. I should not have to SAVE every screenshot that I take.
The consumer needs to know why you decided to make this change. This should have been one of those requirements before releasing the product.
While we have enhancements, we lost functionality.
I am your loyal consumer. I have been using your products for years. Years... and instead of being more productive, I am doing work-arounds for basic items such as telling where I would like to SAVE my directory and in a format that I choose.
The consumer needs to know WHY to understand this decision so we can stop complaining about it. This is time consumer as well. I like to be productive with my time.
Your previous products were a dream to work with. Your latest products are not really looking at ' the consumer and how they would use the tool'. It is how your developers decided to make something happen. Get some Usability Studies on the use of your products and you will make sure the requirements are met before releasing the products.

I have to agree that not being able to define where the SnagIt captures are stored is a short-coming of the program. In an environment in which people are capturing images on their laptop out of the office and then using them on the office desktop computer means you should be designing your programs to store to the cloud so any capture is centrally available where the work is being done. Remembering which computer contains the desired image is not helping the development process, especially if multiple people are involved in a project.
-
-
It's no problem defining where Snagit captures are stored. It's easy to do and it works well. You can store things wherever you like even the cloud. The datastore is the place where captures are automatically saved so that you don't have to. It's a convenience that very few programs have of the user not actually having to do anything to save a file. But when you want to then you can. Please remember that the datastore is where "UNSAVED" captures are located. Anything else you can do.
I'm not sure why the heck this frustrates anybody. While it would be nice for the datastore to able to have its location defined by the user it's a huge convenience to have a datastore just as it is. -
-
Frustration sets in when you were able to set the location of your UNSAVED captures and back it up with no problems. I am really trying to understand the "real" convenience to having the datastore right where you wanted it (oh I mean right where Techismith wants its). You are right it is a huge convenience for Techsmith. It is not a huge convenience of the users of the product especially since they had that ability to set the location before Why take that ability or control away from the users?
Please Techsmith, give us back our ability to save the files in a location of our choosing. We had it before. -
-
The autosaving of captures.was first introduced in Snagit 9 released 10 Jun 2008. The datastore which stores those captures has always been at a fixed location. The user never had a choice. Here's the link for the history: http://www.techsmith.com/snagit-versi...
The convenience is autosaving of captures. You can take a capture, close down Snagit and loose nothing. I'm not quite sure what your issue is since you do have the ability to set beforehand where you want to save your captures. Just set it n your profile under the Share option. Doesn't that work for you?
-
-
Here's a video of how this is done: http://screencast.com/t/QoVLlg1TAKPs
The video just missed the green arrow in the editor used to finish the profile so here's a picture of it. You don't have to send your capture to the editor but I always do. It's possible just to save it directly to your desired location. But if you do send it to the editor pushing the green arrow is the last little bit to finish your profile and in this case to save your file.

I'm not sure Manny Carvalho is being argumentative just to be arguing or if the participants are truly talking past each other, but I can give you my reasoning for wanting to specify where the "unsaved" images are placed. Sometimes I am not in the office when a webinar is scheduled, so I use my laptop in a coffee shop (or McDonalds) to watch the webinar. I use SnagIt to capture some screens as the webinar is being conducted. I don't have time to save each screenshot to a user defined location and quite candidly I may have snapped a screenshot before the presenter completed the slide so I may have to rush to re-capture the screen before the presenter moves to the next slide. When I return to the office, I select from the "unsaved" images those screen shots I want to use on my desktop computer to enter in OneNote. My desktop has 2 larger monitors and a keyboard which accommodates "Fat Fingers". If the laptop saved my "unsaved" images to the cloud, they would be readily accessible for my office editing session. Once I select the images I want to put in my notes, I delete the "unsaved" files from that session, because they are now in OneNote. It is a real pain having to start the laptop and move the files to my office computer just to complete my notes.
-
-
Apparently we are talking past each other Doug because you can do exactly what you want right now. Your laptop can send images to the cloud if you set up your profile to do so. You can set it with an automatic filename and bypass the editor all together. Yes, it takes some work on your part in setting up the profile but once set it will work. Just look at my video and look at the options.
I realize that you want to place the datastore at your desired location. That's not possible but you can accomplish what you want anyway by properly setting up your profile. Why don't you try and do that? -
-
Hi Manny. Thank you for the video that was great. Thank you for taking the time. We agree with you. Yes, SAVING image captures in the way you describe is great. One by one, individually you can save each shot.
I am like Doug. I am looking at presentation on the web or webinar and I have setup keyboard shortcut to make my captures. The presentation might be 5 minutes long and they may spend 2-7 seconds on each slide depending on what is on the slide. You don't have the time to SAVE each individual shot.
Try it yourself. Try to find a 2-5 minute presentation that you can let run and then try your method while the screens in the presentation are advancing (You cannot stop the presentation). You will definitely miss some great notes because you are trying to NAME your file.
I tried to change the location of the DATASTORE to my dropbox and then I could have it available anywhere I go. That did not work. I tried to setup Snagit to auto SAVE with a sequential number (no interaction from me) and save to a pre-determined location and that failed. The CAPTURES instead are stored inside the DATASTORE and are marked as "UNSAVED".
So even if I have the option to try and save to a location on with each individual file; it proves to be a heartache and a cumbersome, time consuming work-around. Not only that: We work with a container DATASTORE saved to a LOCAL PC under a specific USERS section. Not ideal if you have multiple machines, laptops and working from the cloud.
If we never had the functionality before; but we had it that way. What is my work-around. I do my screen captures with Evernote when working from a webinar or presentation. Not ideal since I would like to use my SNAGIT (I love Techsmith's products) I was just not sure of why they removed the functionality that was so very helpful, fast and efficient. I am patiently waiting on TechSmith.
I hope this helps to explain another process slightly different than yours. Thanks again for your video. It is appreciated. -
-
I'm not sure how many ways I can say this. Forget the datastore. It's not needed.
Here's a video how I modified my profile for Dropbox. I took and stored three captures of your post within seconds.
Here's the video: http://screencast.com/t/xiwy46TUZ
And below are those same captures in my dropbox in the web.
Isn't that what you want?
-
-
Manny, Thanks for that. That works for me. I am a happy camper. I was wrong and you were right.
PS... leave off the innuendos that you add to your GOOD PROFESSIONAL advice. "Apparently we are talking past each other... or "I'm not sure how many ways I can say this" It really does not add any meaning to your helpful advice and is design to really make someone feel very awkward for not understanding something as well as you do.

Hi Bob, One question, is both your PC and Laptop on the same OS: Win 7? Not sure but it might be your view of system files/folders turned off on the laptop.
-
-
Yes. Both running Windows 7 home premium. All of the other files/folders are in view. Not sure why the AppData is not there.
However, I did check out the DataStore folder that is listed under the Recent folder. Apparently the data did transfer to the folder but SnagIt doesn't seem to recognize it?? If I click on one of the captures in this folder it brings up SnagIt and it is properly displayed. However, when in SnagIt and I list 'ALL Captures' it is not included or displayed? Don't understand this.
UPDATE: I checked my folder settings and you were correct. Some of the folders were hidden. Not sure why this was but THANK YOU.
However, the problem with SnagIt still exists. The DataStore folder contains the images but they don't show in the SnagIt edit window. Once again I clicked on one of the captures that I just added to the DataStore folder and indeed it came up in SnagIt. Is there some other tag that is missing? When I do select one of the captures not only does it appear in the editor window but it now is added to the other files that are listed. Is there a problem with just transferring files like I did? -

How do I get thee Editor to point back to my AppData\Local\TechSmith\Snagit\DataStore folder? I navigated elsewhere, and now I can't seem to see / select the AppData folder in the Folders pane.
This is really confusing! Would have thought the captures would go in "My Pictures" ... -
