"An error has occurred with the following clip on the timeline"

I have a problem when I'm playing my .camrec:
"We're sorry! An error has occurred with the following clip on the timeline: C:\Users\blablabla\Documents\Camtasia Studio\bloblo\bloblo.camrec!Screen_Stream.avi.

The clip may not produce correctly."

What do I do? (I use Camtasia Studio 8)

That error indicates that Camtasia Studio was not able to decode the video in order to read frames out of it.

The best way for us to help is for you to visit http://support.techsmith.com and submit a question on the Ask a Question page. Someone from our TechSupport staff will follow up by email to help troubleshoot further. We will need to get the .camrec file that's causing the problem in order to diagnose the problem.

The best way you guys can help is to fix some of these annoying bugs or at least give better error messages (I wasted quite some time on the one cause by having an "&" in my file names").

The second best way you guys can help is to post what the root cause of the issue was and how you solved it once you figured it out.

For the benefit of others: I noticed my .camrec file had an underscore in the filename and so I:
1 - Closed CS8
2 - Renamed the .camrec file (removed the underscore - I suggest removing any other character that is not alphanumeric)
3 - Re-opened the CS8 project and pointed it to the renamed .camrec file

Produce and Share then worked without an issue. Not saying it will fix your issue or that the underscore was the problem. Heck - restarting Camtasia usually helps with the blank preview screens. I love Camtasia guys, but at times I hate it.

Thanks Ben, would have taken ages to get round to that possible solution, its worked for a couple of files but alas not all :-)
also agree that posting root cause would be of great help as would having an error report that is readable locally rather than the camerror output

I'm having this exact same problem. At first I thought it was per the above comment , i.e. needing to remove non alphanumerics from the .camrec files, but I have followed the instructions above and am still getting the same result.

Need this sorted quickly for training purposes. Help please?

I see these error messages occasionally

I just close the error dialog and ignore it

so far, so good

I still produce and all is OK

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately that doesn't work for me. Regardless of whether I click the 'ok' button or just close the message down entirely, Camtasia reverts directly to the last screen of the production menu (i.e. the one with 'Finish' on it). If I then click on 'Finish', it just goes straight back to the error message (and from there it just continues to repeat)

OK, I thought you were seeing the error when playing the timeline, not executing a production..

Perhaps best to log a case with tech support

I’m getting the same error. The wmv file has been encoded. I took out any dashes,
periods, underscores or non-alphanumeric characters and I’m still getting the error.

My video editor on my team (in Philippines) doesn’t get the error on his end. So
we’ve even tried having him send me his camrec file to me but to no avail. I always get the error on my end.

Even if I ignore the error - I get audio but no video in Camtasia and thus can’t edit the file.

Any thoughts?

can you play the wmv on a local player [not in CS]?

if so, play the wmv and recapture it playing with Recorder to get a fresh camrec

the wmv in your post looks large; consider capturing it in sections [10 minutes at a time, with a little overlap]; these separate clips can be seamlessly combined in a CS project

The removing of non-alphanumerics did the trick for me.

(My filenames had a dash ' - ' in them.)

Thanks!

I've got the exact same issue with the latest build 8.1.2 build 1327. It's not fixable with a change in the file name. Very annoying and it needs to be fixed immediately. The workaround for the former build was better - at least you could extract the WMV. But now it does not even record it.

Ok here's how I fixed that annoying problem when that error message came up. You can fix it by renaming your video but that did not work for me.

So what I did was:

I simply downloaded a Free video converter to convert my video from an AVI format to an MP4 format.

So far my video has been working perfect when I changed the format of the video from AVI to MP4.

So far These video formats have worked
-MP4
-MOV

But I'm sure other formats work you may just need to try them.....

You can find a free video Converter by simply googling it that's how I found mines...

Hopefully Helps :)

Had a similar issue, resolved by separating audio and video in problematic clip and then hiding the audio (that i didn't need anyway)

What did it in my case was to remove the audio by right-click and separating it from the video. Erasing audio track which could have been corrupted or encoded in the wrong format allowed to produce the video successfully.
