.cmrec Files

How do these relate to the Camtasia files and is there any way to see which Camtasia files they are being used in? I have a ton of them piling up and taking a lot of space.

If I delete them, will they no longer be available to my completed projects?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Nooooo - you do not want to delete them - unless you have absolutely finished with a rendered project, Even if you have finished with a project and decide a week later that you need to add to a project or add a special effect like a highlighted mouse cursor, you will need those camrecs. You can use Camtasia to zip a project and archive to Dropbox and free up local storage if you like.

The .cmrec files are the Camtasia recording files, while .cmproj files hold the Camtasia project info and media files.

After you make a recording, Camtasia saves the recording file (.cmrec) to a temporary directory (~/Movies/Camtasia 2/Temporary Recordings) for 14 days. It also puts it in your current project (or makes a new one). Once that project has been saved, Camtasia copies the recording file into the project.

So, once you've saved the project that contains the recording, you can delete the original from the temporary directory if needed. If this becomes a pain, you can always set how long Camtasia before deletes them in the Preferences (http://www.screencast.com/t/UcZcfwQR).

If you do need to use the recording in a project later, you can always drag it from the media bin of the project it's already in to the new project.

My directory has trec files in it. Is it ok to delete these? I do not have any projects open and Camtasia 2 is closed.

The .trec files are "the new .cmrec."

A few versions back, we made it so both Camtasia for Mac and Camtasia Studio (on Windows) record the same format. This allows recordings made on either platform able to be edited on the other.

The new recording ouput is now .trec. Pretty much everything I said above (2 years ago) still applies to this new format.

The .trec files are your screen recordings.  If you do not plan on reusing them, it is safe to delete them.
