A Potential Fix for the Dreaded "Black Screen" Recording Problem

Multiple people on this forum seem to run into an issue where do a recording and then see only a black screen on Camtasia. After reading through all the forum posts, I assumed it was a bug, even though I'm using the latest current version of Camtasia for Mac (3.1.0) and am running the latest MacOS (High Sierra).

Fortunately, I found a resolution and I wanted to share it in case it solves anyone else's problem.

It turned out the issue for me was that my "Project Dimensions" had somehow gotten set from 1920x1080 to 2x1. Therefore, it appeared as if my screen was black in Camtasia, when in fact it was just reduced to a tiny, invisible canvas.

The fix was to right-click on the video area and select "Project Settings", then I could set the dimensions back to something sane, in my case "1080px HD (1920 x 1080)". Hope this helps someone else.

This is a bug that showed up in High Sierra.  We do have a fix for this in an upcoming 3.1.1 release which addresses issues that showed up in High Sierra.  In the meantime, you'll need to verify and adjust your canvas dimensions whenever you create a new project.
