add an option to "save as new version"

I work in CAD design software and when you start a design, you want to save it.  After making some changes, you don't always want to overwrite the original design so most software including mine has "save as new version" which makes a new file filename.2.ext.  After making changes and doing save as new version again, there is filename.3.ext.  If down the line a file gets corrupted after working on it a long time (too common) i can easily go back.  or if i don't like something i got rid of, i can easily go back to an older version and merge them or extract or just work on that one

I've often wanted this as an automatic capability

Camtasia has a "save as" function, but it does not automatically add the sequence number

my workaround is to use a simple number at the beginning of the project name whenever I do a manual save and want to sequence the current project status

I use the shortcut for save-as [alt-F,A] hit the home key to put cursor at beginning of name, and type something like 01, then hit enter key

quick and easy when you make it a habit
