Allow Snagit Library to be put on a network drive

(This idea is something we’ve heard from customers over time from several of our sources of feedback. We’re posting it here to gauge how well this fits our users’ needs. So please let us know what you think.)

Some customers work mostly off of network drives. This is especially the case for those in corporate environments with shared computers or if they use virtual machine software like VMWare. And they would like better support for putting Snagit's Capture Library on a network drive.

*EDIT* Based on feedback provided by users, adding locations such as OneDrive, Google Drive, etc. to this topic.

We love this idea. We’ve gotten the impression that it falls into two use cases: those that are using Snagit by themselves and those that want to share captures between people in a team.

For those that want to use it for themselves, there is a desire to put their library either on a network drive or in a cloud storage service. This is mostly for backups and moving between machines. This is something we’ll look at. Seems like a simple use case, but there may be some tricky things that we need to handle to make it work with multiple machines using the same library.

For those that want to share captures between others on a team, you only want to share some things. And it would be more of an explicit share action to a shared location as opposed to automatic sharing of the whole library.

We will ideally need more information as we get closer to this and we will likely start by exploring and researching the first use case of putting your entire library on a network drive or cloud storage.

Thank you for voting!

Hello all!

We still have this Under Consideration.

Just to set some expectations. We looked into this and we couldn't get it in our next release without creating some a level of risk that we'd have some serious bugs. And when we have bugs in capture storage, that's really serious. We want to do everything we can to prevent data loss. That means lost time, work, and a lot of frustration. So we're likely going to put this one in the following release. We had several other things that we had Under Consideration that are now Planned for this release from the most recent round of voting. Those ideas were much less risky, so that's why you've seen those updated to Planned over this one.

What that means though is that we'd like to do this fairly early in our next release so that we can uncover any bugs before widely releasing it. We will reach out to everyone that participated in this thread to see if you'd like to beta this functionality. We will look into ways to reduce the risk to beta participants (like having it run side by side with a separate library than the released version of Snagit). So keep an eye open for a beta invite after our next release (date TBD, but before the end of this year).
