Allow Snagit Library to be put on a network drive

(This idea is something we’ve heard from customers over time from several of our sources of feedback. We’re posting it here to gauge how well this fits our users’ needs. So please let us know what you think.)

Some customers work mostly off of network drives. This is especially the case for those in corporate environments with shared computers or if they use virtual machine software like VMWare. And they would like better support for putting Snagit's Capture Library on a network drive.

*EDIT* Based on feedback provided by users, adding locations such as OneDrive, Google Drive, etc. to this topic.

This the problem with the roundup process.  The clock gets reset each time and ideas have to be raised again.  If they are not top voted they still don't get done.

There are lots if us long time users who raise issues that are to do with plumbing, (not sexy, no one wants to know about it, but it sure gets smelly without it) and this is one of those.  It's a no brainer, and I would like to see some credence given to persistently requested features as well as the top voted.  How long do you keep swatting away the flies?  Just fix the plumbing and they'll go away!

I'll be advising my company not to upgrade.

This is disappointing to say the least. I work across multiple machines for various clients. I was just about to but the latest version, but I cannot. I will continue to use ancient, unsupported, but totally reliable ScreenCaptor. Though slow with cloud storage, it works. I was looking and hoping for something more modern (and 2019 is) but I need to cloud shared library...bummer.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled DataStore merged into OneDrive folder.

I’d highly recommend adding this ability to for SnagIt to recognize moving the DataStore to Miscrosoft Onedrive. This would allow for each workstations snags to always be backed up, allow us to share Snags more easily, and would allow for multiple computers that you use to have access to a merged library of all your snags.

Awhile back I did get it to "kind of" work with Onedrive. The app on two different machines could 'see' the clips from each client, but each client only really recognized the clips that came from itself. I have a hunch (and it's just hunch) this is due to how the GUID associated with the clips is stored (at the client, in the app). So, the other client(s) won't truly completely recognized the other client's clips. To make this change, it could be a bigger deal that it looks on the surface...just my 2 cents. But, I will buy this app in a heart beat when it works on cloud storage.

Yep, that's exactly what happens to me when I share using Synology Drive, which is basically a NAS based version of what One Drive does, so the cloud is actually my private cloud.

It's my default setting now and had been for a year, and iit works perfectly for one PC.

And I think you're hunch is close to the mark

Paul, I am much too late, I know . . . the other thread ( "DataStore merged into OneDrive folder") has been closed, I can't comment on that.
Just want to say  -thanks-  for the registry solution you provided at the bottom of that thread. Though the fix is 'simple' (as you say), I would not have found it myself.

Again thanks and sorry for being late.

That said...
Frankly, I am a bit confused with regards to the status of this idea (Network drive support, that is)
There are many threads that are having the word 'shared' or 'network' in the title, but one that I think carries much weight is titled :  "Allow Snagit Library to be put on a network drive"  where Chris Larson commented (about a year ago):

So we're likely going to put this one in the following release. "
(which I suppose would be 2019 then?

I believe a lot of folks were excited back then, but AFAIK it is'n't built in yet and above all, it isn't listed in the "2018 Year-end Snagit Feature Request Roundup!" thread(?)

Or, very likely, I got it all mixed up... ?

Or there has been some comment from TechSmith somewhere that after due consideration they abandoned the idea after all.

Or, as it does show up in the year end voting, TechSmith might have forgotten about it and we should raise it again, as a 'new idea'.. ha!
(as you hinted above)

1. Allow Snagit Library to be put on a network drive - 69 votes (under consideration)
In: Snagit Feedback Feature Request Round-Up

2. Snagit 2017 Year End Voting Roundup!

Still under consideration

3. 2018 Year-end Snagit Feature Request Roundup!
Gone ...

I am going to contact them. I am so angry about this. It should have been available from the start especially in this day and age where people are much more mobile than the 80's where this company is obviously still living <angry face>

I've said it before and I'll say it again: this functionality would be what would entice me to buy a new version.

Currently still working with Snagit 12 and it does the job.

Well, probably we all should have some patience and just hope it won't take as long as adding  'Rulers'...  :-)

I did some digging in my 'archive' and found a copy of a my post titled "A few wishes", that has been archived in the meantime, i.e. you can't trace it.
But it was dated april 1st 2013.
I mentioned Add Rulers there as an idea.

4 years later - in the "Snagit 2017 Year End Voting Roundup", at least the idea made it to the status of 'Under Consideration'.

Almost 6 years later: it could be that it is still 'Under Consideration', or maybe the idea has been dropped somewhere in 2018, I don't know.

Hi all! This idea definitely has a lot of activity, which is great. I replied a couple weeks ago as a reply to a comment, with some status (more detail in there). And Bill asked about the status on the 2018 roundup thread. I couldn't make my response an "Official Response" here because it was a reply to a comment, so it definitely got lost in here.

But to recap. We will look at the feasibility of this again. The reason it didn't make the 2018 voting list is that we already know this has a ton of interest from you all, so voting again seemed unnecessary. I know it's been a long time and I apologize for that.

When we dug into this after the initial round of voting it became apparent that it was a bigger undertaking than we thought. That was due to the way Snagit has traditionally stored files (in a database; that doesn't work well when multiple computers try to write to it). This is still under consideration and we're going to take another look at making this happen in a future release. We can't promise when that will be, but the good news is that the new way we're doing stamp searching might help us quite a bit here. So that could serve as a nice pattern for bringing this to a future version of Snagit.

I know I've added this comment before (years ago) but I have to say again that I think evaluating whether an idea is a goer based on volume of activity on forum threads is a bit flawed. Surely we are just the tip of the iceberg when considering users who don't use the forum... not to mention people who don't yet use Snagit, but might if a certain feature was implemented.

Hi Winerz - we source innovation ideas from multiple places and the forums are just one input among many when determining what to put in the product. I agree with you that just tallying votes cast by a tiny minority of users and mindlessly putting those features in the product would be a pretty flawed approach. Fortunately, that's not what we do.  :)

I mean WHAT???
"That was due to the way Snagit has traditionally stored files (in a database; that doesn't work well when multiple computers try to write to it)"
They obviously don't really want our business so I am going to look at other products. I will be suggesting them to my current employer and also my new employer ;-)

Let's try not to get too spooled up and let's see if they can sort this out. It's most likely a significant change under the hood (see my earlier comment) that will take some real time to untangle. This product could be great with Cloud support. My ScreenCaptor app is holding it's own for being quite dated...but there isn't much else that works for my needs at least.

I solved this issue myself but it is due to our internal settings.  Our company 'My Documents' location is on the network.  Since that is the case, pointing to a subfolder in that location works for me.  I can't explicitly set to the network drive, but setting the library to a subfolder under 'My Documents' ends up translating to a folder on my 'L:/' drive.  I'm not sure if that solution would work for everyone, but  there you go.

But can you move from PC to PC and share that library? I can't

Does that work when using a different computer to access the same clips?

It does.  It's on a network, and all my PCs have the same 'My Documents' folders

Hmm...and you've been able to create a new clip on one PC, then retrieve that exact same clip and manipulate on another PC?

I'm sorry, I need to be clear on this.

1. You can share a png/jpeg/pdf etc file by saving it to the network. Check

2. You can physically save a .sng file to a network drive, and then load that on another pc.  Check

3. But you can't move the SnagIt datastore to a network drive and share any of the automatically maintained SnagIt library between computers by pointing all your PC's at the same datastore.  Cross.  Or are you saying that you can?  If you can do that, then you are one lucky person because none of the rest of us have managed to do that, because the data store uses a form of database that isn't multiple PC friendly.

Specifically the SnagIt900.sdf file gets you sync issues, when SnagItEditor is running.
"This file is in use".

What I tried, but is a really very poor workaround...

Paul, with thanks to your registry update
see: https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/uninstalled-snagit-during-an-upgrade-during-the-uninstall-i-opted-to-save-my-captures-now-i-cannot-find-them-where

-quote-
If you have difficulty attaching to the old location, here's the registry hack to reconnect to it

-Completely exit Snagit so it is not running in the background (the Editor too; anything related to Snagit needs to be closed)
-Goto Registry Editor (press start and type regedit)
-Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
-Find the Software folder, then TechSmith
-Click on the 18 (or 19) folder
-then in the right-hand pane scroll down to "DataStoreLocation"

-Delete that entry.  Yes, delete it.
-Relaunch Snagit and it will ask you where the Datastore is.
-Select your folder

-unquote-

After exiting SnagIt/SnagItEditor - I copied the \DataStore folder to OneDrive.
Applied above registry patch and connected the OneDrive Datastore.
the .sdf file will only be synchronized after exiting SnagIt.

I did the same on the laptop.

I also set the file save folder to a OneDrive folder

Captures on both desktop and laptop are saved on OneDrive
Laptop and desktop are using the same datastore folder.

Okay.

Now both SnagIt  on desktop and laptop are running.
They use the same datastore folder.

I captured something on desktop.
Then fully exited.
Laptop fully exited.
The .sdf file is synchronized
On laptop : open SnagIt/SnagItEditor - the capture (taken by SnagIt desktop) showed up in the library.

Again, I know..., this is indeed a super-crappy workaround, but probably the best one can get until TechSmith, some time in future, will finally decide to fix it
