Alternate to SnagIt 12 missing text capture

This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Text Capture

The text capture feature has been removed from SnagIt 12. I'm looking for a
suggestion for an alternative. I periodically find the text capture feature useful. SnagIt was the only way I knew how to capture text. For example I would use it to capture and then manipulate file lists from Windows Explorer or a list of database queries.

Suggestions for an alternative would be appreciated.   Thanks

I too find the lack of text capture in Snagit 12 disappointing. Over the last 10 years as an IT professional I have depended on text capture almost daily. I obviously won't be upgrading to 12.

I would suggest that TechSmith reinstate the functionality or create  a separate application strictly for robust text capture.

Will it be in 13? There is not a good reason to purchase a new version if I have to go back to the old version for an important component.

I see 13 is already out and I do not see text reinstated. They have the features shown with checks for all of the added features. Maybe they should show the checks stopping at 11 for text capture...

Text capture is not a part of 13.   From what I understand from TechSmith they do not plan to bring text capture back.   Unfortunately, they seem to focusing on new customers and new features and not long time loyal customers.   You can have 11 loaded and run it when you want to do a text capture but you can only have one version running at a time.  Which means you close one and open the other -- a real pain in my opinion.

TechSmith,  Please listen to longtime customers.  Stop ignoring us.

The window file/dir info is actually already text. Is there not a way to do it without OCR? Anybody find a good alternate to snagIt on this side?

I would also like to see the feature brought back.  It doesn't have to be fancy.  For example, you don't need to keep the original text format; I just need the text.  I'm also willing to accept extraneous characters & remove them if I need to.

With so many folks finding this thread and shouting "Me too!", I can't help but to wonder how many of the same folks decided to opt out of that bit of the software that silently reports back usage data. And if nearly all these users did choose to opt out, perhaps it points to a fact that the usage data does actually serve a purpose.

Food for thought...

We have a 24 user license and will not upgrade any of them beyond 11 without the feature.  Nearly 50 percent of our usage is the text capture feature and is one of the major reasons we went with SnagIt years ago.  It may be time to start looking for another program that fits our needs.

This is such a sad commentary. I, too, use a lot of text capture. I also dislike that they removed text capturing of menus. This deletion happened several revisions ago. But, it is nonetheless missed.

"if nearly all these users did choose to opt out, perhaps it points to a fact that the usage data does actually serve a purpose." As a user who always opts opt of all schemes which "silently reports back usage data", with clients who also always opt out too, I respectfully suggest you stop believing your "usage data" and start talking to your users. Try asking them, not inferring, what they think.

Looks increasingly like someone in management ordered a cost cutting audit from some consultancy and they suggested you drop great features like this and flv/swf output in Camtasia 8. Either that or someone's headhunted some key programmers?

Snagit is the swiss army knife in our toolkit, and has been for years. It's one of very few tools I recommend to everyone, because, even if you've got the entirety of Adobe CS/CC + Captivate at your disposal, Snagit instantly solves all those pesky little problems that they don't.

Now it solves one less problem. Clearly we won't be upgrading. Why would we?

The following is the response I had from TechSmith as to why text capture was removed.
"With the release of Snagit 12, we have removed the Text Capture functionality found in previous versions. This decision was reached due to very low usage numbers and Snagit's increased focus on Video and Image capture. The code used for Text capture had become too difficult to maintain, such that updating it to work properly on newer applications and operating systems would have severely delayed our improvements to other areas of the code. The final version of Snagit that contained Text capture was our 11.4.3 release."

Maybe if enough of us complain, they will figure out a way to bring it back.  SnagIt 12 has some nice new features including video but it is unfortunate that they are sacrificing a valuable tool which I have been unable to find elsewhere.
Does anyone know of another tool for text capturing?
Are they also alienating long time users?   Just wondering!

Elaine good point and one that I do not know enough about. In fact, I can probably bet my company has a policy on just such a circumstance as this. Since I am not connected to the network, since I work from home, my work laptop is somewhat shielded from passing on issues to our Corporate network.

I too am disappointed.  Apparently the decision to remove text capture was based on two main factors: (1) the premise that text capture isn't widely used, and (2) the difficulty and effort to maintain text capture given how the product has evolved.

Somebody must be using text capture.  This thread mentions three alternatives: Capture2Text, ABBYY Screenshot Reader, and NirSoft SysExporter.  I don't think these companies would waste time and resources developing something nobody wants.

While I appreciate all the new Snagit features and improvements, doing so at the expense of removing a basic capability that customers have come to depend doesn't seem like the best move.  Fixing one thing while breaking something else should be avoided if at all possible.

Finally, can Snagit be considered a full-service screen capture tool if it can't do text capture? This speaks to the basic image and perception of the product.  A product with the maturity and reputation of Snagit should be able to do it all.  Seems like there has been a deliberate decision to take Snagit in a fundamentally different direction and in so doing sacrifice functionality. I hope it works out for you and doesn't turn in to a "New Coke" debacle.

Hugh inconvenience. I HATE having to run two versions of Snagit. The ONLY benefit I see to v12.0 is the improved video capture option. Otherwise, v11.x has been nearly the best version so far.

Just to chime in here - i use(d) text capture all the time.  My company finally included SnagIt as part of the standard loadset - after I bought it for myself years ago.  But, they are providing v.12 - which is cute for images and videos so the marketing dept. is happy.  They just left the rest of us in the cold.  Guess I'll go back to my previous version.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE put text capture back into the tool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, I understand I can have both versions installed, but that missed the point of having all my captures in one place. missing out on anything new is the price to pay for my preference... please bring text capture back!!!!

Changes are not always making a product better. Once things are out, well, likely they won't come in again. Reference to the many, many complaints about removing the folders once moving from 11.3 to 11.4. Am afraid we have to live with it.

I've found the best alternative to this is to use Nir Sofer's SysExporter.

From his own description: "SysExporter utility allows you to grab the data stored in standard list-views, tree-views, list boxes, combo boxes, text-boxes, and WebBrowser/HTML controls from almost any application running on your system, and export it to text, HTML or XML file."

Incredible! SysExporter perfectly does the job. Thank you very much for this suggestion.

My problem was to grab the folder size list of outlook - to be able to sort it it is necessary to export it e.g. to Excel. Outlook does not provide for this option.

A YouTube contribution (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3skJOd4GIak) recommended Snagit and its capture to text capability - which unfortunately has gone by now. Even Snagit 11 does not work - you can start exporting the folder size window, grabbing seems to work, but finally it only produces an error message (or a next to empty text file). SysExporter perfectly grabs the folder sizes, providing a tab separated list which is suited for direct import in Excel.

I am very disappointed as well. I "upgraded" and then as soon as I opened SnagIt a message appeared saying this version no longer supports text files or something like that and I was like WHAT!? I thought it was a mistake so I emailed technical support -- Nope it's not a mistake at all! Text capture was one of the main reasons I invested in SnagIt just 3 months ago. I used to run 11.4 and 12 together, but every time there's an update to the current version (now on 13.0.2) it would either corrupt or remove 11.4 so now I do it a different way. I also have Power PDF Advanced, so I use the current Snagit to capture the scrolling window and save it to a PDF. Then I saved it as a Word document (could also do a spreadsheet or text file).  Cludgy? You bet. But better than having to reinstall 11.4 every time there's an update.

Can only share my disappointment with others. Upgraded Snagit just to find out it lacks of the important feature I always find useful. Yes, it was not feature to use every day like e.g. regular screen capture, but when you need it you need it. I have to downgrade to the previous version because of this... Money got just wasted

Up front:  I do feel that Techsmith should definitely re-introduce text capture.

However, whilst assuming that they won't be doing that, I think my earlier suggestion (Abbyy Screenshot Reader usd.9,95) does form a reasonable alternative.
It will also text-capture where SnagIt shows a pop-up that it is unable to do so.

I guess I did not read the fine print about losing the ability to capture text. What a major disappointment.
Capturing text is used way more, by me, than capturing Video. I own the latest version of Camtasia to do that with.
After installing SnagIt 12 and then getting the (un-expected) message informing me that it is not compatible with text capture and that my text captures were being saved to my documents folder, I became very frustrated.
I did not uninstall SnagIt 11, and it can be run (after shutting down SnagIt 12), which I did. I found that it still contained my text captures (whew), for that I am thankful.

This is the second time that an upgrade has left me disappointed, the first was when the ability to tag screen shots was changed.

My IT job requires me to be able to capture lots of text (scrolling windows, etc) for validation purposes.
Please consider taking the time to bring it back,
Thanks,

Thanks for the feedback everyone.  I would be interested in hearing what specific applications, browsers, or web sites you were using text capture with.  Elaine listed some specific examples, such as Windows Explorer file lists, I've heard others mention error message boxes, what else?  Specific applications or even better, screenshots of things you want to text capture would be very helpful in determining what we do with this going forward.

I'd also be interested in how you ultimately end up using the text that you capture.  Do you use everything?  Or do you just really need to grab a few words or a few sentences?  Is the formatting/columns of the text important, or is the text itself more important?

* Text of Error Messages was convenient but I could have lived without this since the amount of text can be retyped (ya... boohoo)

HOWEVER... augh!!! I need it back. I've reverted back to version 11.4.3!!!

* any application window where a grid is displayed. Text capture (with scroll) worked great at capturing all data in the entire grid, not just the portion that shows in the small window. This is priceless. once in snagit, I copy/paste this text into excel. The one thing that would make it better is if I could capture the text and export the "data" in to excel.

I capture text in windows dialog boxes; web pages, web applications. Just about any where you can capture text. Since around version 8 the ability to capture a menu item (which really sucked) I used it capture my droplists - saved me a lot of time when writing bug reports, change orders, and end-user documentation.

Two other issues - unrelated - (1) between version 7 and 8 you took away the repeat text feature - often I repeat the same text with building web pages. That was so disappointing note: I don't know what that feature name was but it was awesome. (2) We cannot capture a cursor with scrolling captures. This feature is just about as bad as taking text capture away. If there is a way to capture cursors, I have not found where I can set this preference.

The best and only feature I like with SnagIt 12 is being able to narrate my videos. Genius!

My company designs software. So I am ALL too aware of when management or programmers take away features from the users. Designers do not consider their audience, which is exactly what is happening here.

I don't use snagit on windows explorer, I would be more likely to use powershell to generate a list.  I do use it on pop-ups for capturing error messages.  I also use it in visual studio to capture lists from the schema compare window, though I suppose I could generate a report.  It's just easier with snagit.

Formatting is not important, but for linefeeds, but cleaning up spaces and tabs is no problem.

Thanks for your work on this,

I would very much like the text feature brought back.  I used it all the time capturing text screens at work - it was my second most-used profile.  I would set-up a custom scroll for long Lotus Notes database tables, and then I could easily copy/paste text from the capture.

Nobody to blame but myself - I blindly paid for this upgrade as I've been a huge Snagit advocate since V6.0 and wanted to continue supporting Techsmith.  I wish I knew the text capture was taken out as I would have skipped this upgrade.

" .... as I would have skipped this upgrade."
Likely this will mean skip any future updates as I am afraid that Techsmith does not make it a habit of re-introducing features they have taken out earlier.
This in spite of sometimes heavy complaints, e.g. referring to 'folder view' - taken out at 11.4 and 'v12 - hate new behaviour on manage profiles double click on notification systray icon'
I went back to 11.3 and got the upgrade-fee refunded.

It is a very remote chance, but maybe.. just maybe..., if all are asking for a refund and return to an earlier version, they may reconsider to bring in some removed features.

As a systems engineer, I use the SnagIt scrolling window text capture many times every single day to capture engineering data in a scrolling window that cannot be saved.  I upgraded to v12, because I was sure that SnagIt functionality would be enhanced, not willy-nilly deleted like M$ does.  I have since uninstalled SnagIt v12 and gone back to v11.4.3 to get the best scrolling window text capture tool around.

LOL, I believe TechSmith has replied to this by saying there were technical challenges related to continuing to support the text capture feature. So it's not as if they just arbitrarily and heartlessly removed it. ;)

Note that they are like any other company and are constantly struggling to balance workload with benefit. And they likely saw that there wasn't enough payoff to justify the effort it would take to overcoming all the challenges that the new operating systems threw at them.

You can still download and install SnagIt 11.
To the best of my knowledge everything still works on Windows 10.
You could even use your new SnagIt key if you don't have access to your old one for some reason.

You can download and install a new or an older version from this link.

Try using Capture Assistant (https://capture-assistant.en.softonic.com/). It seems to work pretty well for File Explorer frames. A lot of other views I've tried it on only go to images, but folder listings can go to text with no problem.
