Alternate to SnagIt 12 missing text capture

This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Text Capture

The text capture feature has been removed from SnagIt 12. I'm looking for a
suggestion for an alternative. I periodically find the text capture feature useful. SnagIt was the only way I knew how to capture text. For example I would use it to capture and then manipulate file lists from Windows Explorer or a list of database queries.

Suggestions for an alternative would be appreciated.   Thanks

Thank you for your continued feedback and interest in Snagit.  We originally made the decision to drop text capture based on a variety of reasons.  The biggest driver was that continued changes in OS support caused the feature to degrade despite significant efforts to try to maintain it.  In the intervening time since that decision, things have not changed significantly.  At this time there are no plans to bring back text capture.  That being said, we are listening, and hear the value this feature offered.  We are continuing to consider alternative approaches that could allow us to bring this feature back, but as of yet we have not found a suitable alternative.

As always, thanks for your feedback!

Even if not perfect, some text capture would be better than none. Please consider bringing that capability back. Thank you.

99,9% sure they won't bring it back in. Once features have been taken out, chances of getting them back are close to zero. Suggest to use Abbyy Screenshotreader (see link elsewhere in this thread). On top Abbyy can capture text where SnagIt usually fails, such as 'error pop-up' messages. You have to accept that the text is not formatted though, i.e. it is captured in plain text format. Alternatively, you may consider to step back to v11.3. Many of us still stick to this version. It is not supported anymore. So, for instance, the 12.4 fix "Fix for Global Capture Hotkey not being remembered unless Snagit is closed first" doesn't apply to 11.3.

Very disappointed to see that the ability to capture Text has gone away. This will increase the time it takes me to capture information on shared drives, etc.

Way to drop the ball TechSmith!  Snagit 12 is a huge step backwards.  I'll leave 12 on my personal laptop however my work laptop will not be upgraded.  I think you should release re-release 11 as 13. You'll make many people happy.  I've been using Snagit since 2002.  If TechSmith continues this track, I'll start looking for another product.

Well, at least TechSmith is reducing the price for SnagIt since they've reduced it's worth out from under its customers. Still waiting for my "value subtract" partial refund check though.

TechSmith on removing text capture, why not just admit one of the hallmarks of SnagIt was text capture, but, now, you-all are too comfortable and too lazy to work for previous success, filling the program with worthless trash?

It is time to remove smith from the name!

I've been using SnagIt for years and really miss the capture text feature and I since I just reinstalled SnagIt 12 on a new computer, I don't want to add SnagIt 11 also, but in a past post I noticed someone recommended "ABBYY ScreenShot to Text" which is a free download from http://www.abbyy.com/bonussr/ which I've been using to capture text and it misses some occasional characters, but so did the prior versions of SnagIt.  Seems as though not many picked up on this program so I thought I'd mention it again.  So far this has been working great for me.  I still cannot part with SnagIt though, since I use it so much, especially the ability to scroll pages.

btw,  it can also capture text where SnagIt gets an error, e.g. pop-up Windows error warnings. it makes it easy then to search for solutions.

Yes, you can run both versions on the same computer. The only restriction is that you cannot have version 11 and 12 open at the same time.

You can download and Install SnagIt 11 and activate it with your SnagIt 12 key.
Your SnagIt 12 key will activate all previous versions.

If you have a version 11 key you can activate version 11 and all prior versions as well.

You can download and install a new or an older version from this link. Selecting the "Free Trial" Icon will download the newest version.

For everyone that is missing this that is on Windows 7 or Windows 8, then, there is a fairly easy way to do this that is built into Windows now.

This works for my main usage of snagit's text capture action, which is copying the names of a list of files from Windows Explorer into text/note pad or excel

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wi...

1. Highlight one or more files for which you'd like to know the path in Explorer.
2. Hold down the shift key, and right-click any of the highlighted files.
3. When the context menu pops up, left click on the Copy As Path entry that has magically appeared because you're holding the shift key down.

This article lists another way as well, but for me, working on anyone's windows 8 machine without special setup or program install, I can copy a text list of files quickly and easily.

Excellent - that works a treat - many thanks. It doesn't address all of my text capture needs, but it's a good step on the way. Unfortunately, Snagit 11's text capture now tells me it has failed most of the time. :-(

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Text capture in Snagit 12????.

What the heck happened to Text Capture in Version 12 of Snagit.l  Come on folks.  A number of us depend upon this heavily.  This single function accounts for about 1/2 of my use of your product.  I have used Snagit for a number of years at my prior employer.  So... when I retired, rather than run a bootleg copy, I purchased your latest and greatest to find, much to my dissapointment, that you have removede text capture.

I have been a software developer for 30 years and long ago learned the 1st maxim of software development.  "Thou mayest give but thou shall not take away."

I wish I still had my money and was running an older bootleg copy of your product.  You won't find me recommending your product to my developer friends.

With sincere regrets,

You can actually download and install SnagIt 11. It still supports text capture. You mentioned you wished you still had your money. I'm assuming that means you purchased SnagIt 12?
A SnagIt 12 Key will activate older versions of SnagIt as well.

Yes you can download an older version and you can actually have both versions and switch between the two but WHY?
Tech Smith listen to your long time power users.   You took away a valuable tool and made your product less valuable.   Plus you have angered those long time users.
LISTEN to them.  Bring back text capture.   Redeem yourself

If the window snipping tool does the same as SnagIt why would I buy SnagIt? Oh wait, it used to have a cool part that would capture text and be helpful to all! Nothing like pissing off the people that use the software! Real smart!! I have to think that brain damage set in or the person that did the code for it got canned and they don't know how to write it now. Come on Man! Really! I wouldn't buy this software! The next version will have the screen capture taken out too. Opps, let the cat out of the bag!

Ahhh, but the window snipping tool falls so short of what SnagIt can do! Try annotating something with the snipping tool. Or resizing a capture. Or adding a cool edge effect. Adjusting the color. Adding drop shadows. Removing part of the center.

Sure, it's free and ships with Windows and all, but there is simply no comparison to SnagIt!

Mike I am just curious to how you know for 100 percent sure that they are taking out the screen capture taken out too ? Did you beta test it or something ? Letting the cat out of the bag is not to cool in my opinion as those are just beta tests and nothing set in stone but there is also a Non-Disclosure Agreement that would have to be signed. Just my input and feelings but I do not work for TechSmith,

I agree with you Rick.

Get real here guys! I used this software years ago to do just that, copy text! I have not used it in years till the company I work for got it and I tried to use it for that reason, to COPY TEXT! So put on your thinking caps for a second here. The software was developed to do just that. NOW it doesn't in version 12 but did in 11! Hmm! So the reason was the OS was changing too much to keep up with they had to drop this function! Oh really!

I had a 700+ lines of code to copy out to drop into Excel. What a disappointment! A software that used to do just that for me and a time saver too can’t.

As for the snipping tool in windows, you can capture window shots the same way as SnagIt. Also if you used Paint.NET for your edits, you have an even more powerful tool. Also Rick it’s free! Wait there's more... Gimp is another free tool that would blow your mind away for being a free tool too for editing. Just trying to help others out here.

JUST for the record, I am not ripping on the SnagIt software before version 12 but this version can go where the sun don't shine! I have opinion that is it and it is up to them to bring back the text function or not. I feel that they ripped everyone off if you got the new version and for the same price. Your call if you feel you didn’t get ripped off.

As for the screen capture part Fred, I was being sarcastic for the most part. You never know what will be next!

Hi Mike

Your sarcasm wasn't lost. Unfortunately, I think Fred took you a bit too seriously. ;)

I think what so many seem to be overlooking here is that unless text is embedded in an image where there is no way to make it text, there is nearly always a way to copy it. You just select it and press Ctrl+C. At least, that's how I've always operated.

Mind you I have been using SnagIt for eons. Perhaps 15 years or more. And in all that time I've never personally found a need to use it for text capture because the good ole Ctrl+C has worked for me 99.97% of the time. So that would go a long way toward explaining why folks like me aren't seeing what all the fuss is about.

And here's a little known tip. When you encounter error messages that appear in a dialog, you can usually press Ctrl+C to copy the complete dialog text so you can paste it into other apps as text. Many folks are unaware of that.

Sure, there are and will likely always be free tools created that allow you do do similar things. For me, SnagIt has been one of those "no brainer" tools I've used for years. Meaning, when they release a new version, it's typically a no brainer that one wants to upgrade.

Of course, like anything else, your mileage will likely vary and you will view things differently.

I saw what Joe Morgan posted. Not sure if it was Joe having second thoughts or if TechSmith took the post with the image down. I'm sure I regularly come off as a blind cheerleader for TechSmith. And that's fine with me. They are good folks and they (like all of us) are simply trying to do the best they can with their available resources.

One of my philosophical views on life is that you just do the best you can with things. I'm accepting TechSmith at their word. There were likely issues that they could avoid by removing the feature. For me, life goes on and I'll continue to be happy.

Cheers all... Rick :)

You referring to this Image? Yeah, I took it down because it's a bit over the top. But here you are cheerleading again. Pointing out the fact that you don't understand the feature you stopped by to comment on. Then, leaving a long explanation as to what might work instead.

I created this in fun " With a Point".

It's great that you tend to see the glass as overflowing with Techsmith products.
It's not the same for those that are missing a feature that is no longer available to them, one they would like back. A feature that made life easier for THEM. I don't need to copy code myself.
People like yourself and Fred tend to color your responses with a Pro Techsmith attitude that I will convey in the image posted below. Don't get mad, it's a joke. "Mostly" Besides, it took me a while to create it. Hate to waste the effort.
I've posted my share of angry threads towards Techsmith. I'm trying not to go there anymore. They've dealt with most of the  issues. They even returned the Quality Slider to the rendering process.

Joe no offense taken. But, when it comes to beta testing and agreements and Mike's comment could have been sarcasm but I take the Non-Disclosure Agreements seriously so I was asking for certain reasons. No big deal.

As far as your comment of me seeing the glass as overflowing with TechSmith Products you could be right but, I too have things that I would like to see and have not seen it for years and that are still not available. With that being said I understand that not everything that is removed or added is going to make any of us or all of us happy and there will always be some things people do not like. It is that way with any software out there. No one software company is a Miracle all in one solution for what the users including myself would like to see. I understand that users would like to see things that have been removed put back but sometimes it just does not happen due to reasons unknown or with the changing technology in this world and the way companies work or should I say do not work together (sarcasm) here.

I am sure you can relate to that and yes I do love the TechSmith software I use and sometimes I am not always happy with changes made but I like any other user can only request that a feature that was removed is replaced so I can relate to how users feel. I have been using their products (software) for many years. I have also wanted TechSmith to implement the ASIO for audio for those of us who use Pro Audio Equipment and want to train on software that has the ASIO Features but cannot because of limitations.

Not going to get into debates or arguments with anyone but if they are that unhappy with the software then they should make a request to bring back a feature they want and use. Also, I see a lot of posts from users who claim they are a software developer and that this or that should be an easy thing to program into the software and seem unhappy that it has not been done for them. So all I am saying is for those people if it is so easy and maybe you are one or not one Joe they should just write a software program that is the miracle all in one solution. They would probably be rich.

On that note I hope everyone has a great day/night.

P.S. Joe nice image work. Did you use SnagIt in that creation ? LOL.

Oh and just to let the Camtasia Studio Users know if they do not already know. There is an update to Camtasia Studio put out today for version 8 that added the ability to upload to Vimeo. So TechSmith is listening to their users on certain things and it may just take sometime to get other things done or get an explanation to why it can or is not being done. Just my opinion.

It's a Photoshop creation. Takes a lot of steps to blow up Icon sized photos to that size, retain some clarity, add masking, etc.. I lazily added the speech boxes in SnagIt. So it did play a part.

Being passionate about a Person, Place, or Thing / Product. Is great! There's always a time and a place for it.

In a nut-shell?
When software suddenly quits providing a service, one that you could always count on.
Then, you invest the time to post into this forum. Ask why that is? Express your desire to get that functionality back.
How much passion someone else retains for the program. Is probably insignificant to most people.
The passion expressed for the software, Techsmith and all it's employees.  All that  Rhetoric.  Drowns out everything else at times.
Aggravates the person that posted the question. I've seen them fire back with angry responses over the rhetoric many times. That was the actual point I was trying to make, the reason that it bothers me at times. I know the image didn't say all that. So I figured I should.

Regard, Joe

Thanks, Ken - that looks like the answer. However, as that page says "Capture Assistant is built using TextGRAB SDK technology which allows you to add capture functionality to any application.", I would imagine that "any application" would include Snagit and that the text capture capability therein could be swiftly restored.

A response from Snagit to this suggestion would be appreciated.

1. The correct link is

http://www.renovation-software.com/en/text-grab-sdk/textgrab-sdk.html

2. I used to use SnagIt MANY times a day, while I was a SQA Engineer - nothing better then SnagIt's abilities.

a. -> Capture the screen, Add annotation/stamps/etc... showing process used to get to the issue.

b. -> Craft an email, with the image AND the text of any error messages included. (Always took both screen grabs together)

* Why is Text copy needed? MANY reasons, as noted above. For a specific case: Some defects involved the program under test's error message itself [Developers are all in India. Their English is WAY better then my Hindi, but their verb conjugation style is ummm... different.] I Often needed to show "Is vs. Desired" The need to hand enter the wrong text, then the right text... non-optimal.

Now, I am an SQA Manager. One of the things I have to do is keep my SQA/Test teams set up with the best tools.

Snag-it USED to be a slam dunk.

Now, with the need to add other programs to compensate for SnagIt kind of crippling itself in this 1 area... I am not so sure.

I am finally logging on to complain about this feature loss.  I used to LOVE using the text capture.  Sometimes you just need the actual text so you can manipulate it, put it into the flow of a document ... whatever.  A graphic does not always fit the bill.

I work in a managed seat environment, so I am totally screwed in the text capture arena.  I *cannot* download version 11 or any other software that may offer the text capture feature.  Some of the apps we have don't let you highlight text and press Ctrl-C.  Well you can press it, but when you paste you get ... nothing.

So, now I have to just type the bloody text if I really need it.  Blech.

It can capture to text items where SnagIt may fail (e.g. Windows error popup boxes)

Thanks - I hate to say anything complimentary about a Microsoft product (!), but although the test I just did wasn't perfect, it was good enough for casual use. Thanks to you and Steven. I might have tried the Abby product, but previous experience of another of their products means they wouldn't be the first choice.

Think of the learning curve. I have never actually worked with OneNote although I do have it installed in my Office 2013. I tried it a few times, but gave up: it would take too much time to learn to accomplish something simple. I think having read that the OCR capabilities of Evernote are superior to OneNote. Abby is simple, straightforward, nothing to learn.

I have also noticed a new tool on SourceForge, might be interesting, called Capture2Text:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/capture2text/

Takes a portion of the screen as input, performs OCR, and copies the text to the clipboard.

Might be worth a shot.  It is free.

Be careful - I was a bit surprised by the large size of the zip file but continued - when I clicked on the downloaded file, the screen flashed and nothing else happened. I now find that File Explorer dies within a split second of opening. This has happened to me before, to be fair and has been fixed by sfc /scannow, but when I get to the file I will be deleting it. Your experience may differ.

So you downloaded a zip file, and then the act of opening the zip file corrupted Windows Explorer, requiring sfc?  You might want to try a
chkntfs /c c:
then do a reboot to have it check the filesystem on your hard drive, too.  I see nothing wrong with this particular zip file, it doesn't look to be malformed, maliciously or otherwise.  It opens with WinZip, 7-zip, WinRAR, and Windows Explorer just fine for me.  No crashing or sfc necessary.  You might have other problems.

Thanks, Norm - that's reassuring and I may try again. As I said, I've had this problem before and the first time I had to run this lot before Explorer eventually started behaving again, but the second time just sfc did the trick:

sfc /scannow
chkdsk c: /f (at restart)
C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

I tried your checkntfs, but it ended very quickly and had no discernible effect, even after a reboot. The feechur also makes the taskbar icons disappear for unpredictable periods, which doesn't help. I suspect it'll come back in due course. but I'll keep running these to see if Windows submits!

I haven't tested Capture2Text, basically because hotkeys are to be used, which I find less convenient.

A bit earlier in this thread, attention was drawn to Abbyy Screenshot Reader.
Just a small fee is required. It works perfectly. Email support, spellchecker, etc.
No, I don't work for Abbyy :-)

I too am sad for the loss of the text feature. As others have said, when its needed its very valuable.

Our company jumped from SnagIt 11 to 13. What a shock! I cannot say I have been impressed with the radical departure on design. It seems much more confusing to me overall. For years SnagIt was the best thing going for image capture. But, I fear it is now in a tail spin. :-(

Just an observation from an old SnagIt dog here myself. I was trying to assist someone yesterday with an issue and it caused me to close SnagIt  13 and re-open SnagIt 12. I've been using 13 pretty much exclusively for several months now and I actually found myself fumbling in 12 as I struggled to recall where things were.

So I'd say it's really a lot like rearranging furniture and folks should allow themselves time to adjust.

Cheers... Rick :)

Then you have to close 12 and open SnagIt11 to actually restore text capture...That's what I have to do on my personal computer. I am trying to make sure my school does not "update/upgrade" to 12 or 13 or I will lose this tool where it is most important.>:(
