Alternative Video Capture Software to Snag-It?

Anyone use anything else to capture video?  I've been trying to use Snag-it, but it's broken twice since I've had my laptop reimaged, and that was only 2 weeks ago.

The quality of Techsmith products seems questionable to me at this point, so anyone have any non-Techsmith alternatives for capturing video?

Just need something reliable as everything will be edited in Premiere.

Thanks.

You can do all kinds of editing. It may not be Camsata but I simply don't need all that and this WELL fits the bill. You can start a capture online or download the program

Thanks.  Will check it out.  I was able to fix the current install of snagit because I had an installer from the last version, so maybe 13.1 has a broken file in it.

Hmmm... both Camtasia 9 Recorder and Snagit 13 are working cleanly for me, and I've done some pretty complex recordings with both... it would be interesting to know what your hardware config is

Intel i5-4300U, 8GB DDR3 RAM, no dedicated graphics card.

Not a particularly powerful laptop, but it also has company software on it for security purposes, and I imagine that complicates things further.

Hello,

This forum is intended to support TechSmith customers and products. I have no idea where you are or what your culture deems correct, but to openly ask about competitor products seems a bit brazen.

You likely have something wrong on your end that should be addressed. Did you try a re-install? A re-image is generally trustworthy but it wouldn't hurt to try reinstalling it to see if restores operation. There may simply be a file missing or something doesn't match that a reinstall would cure.

Then if you still need to get your issue figured out, there are many smart helpful users here in addition to direct TechSmith support.

Well, best I can tell this is a forum meant for users to assist a company's customers when their product fails.  Adobe has something similar, and sometimes the fix is a different product.

I believe the first statement is absolutely correct and we're willing to do that. When the product works for us, we need to figure out why yours doesn't.

If "broken" means it won't even open, you have a configuration problem or incomplete install problem that is not the fault of the program. Try a reinstall before throwing it under the bus.

Asking about other brands of products out on the internet is cool as part of your research , doing it on right on the site the company provides? Not so much.

Well, like I said I fixed it.  Techsmith provides this site and that's nice and they are certainly free to moderate out questions about other companies' products if they choose to.  If they don't, I don't imagine it is a problem for them.

For instance, my posts on Adobe's site don't even post until a moderator approves them (maybe a little Orwellian, but it's their site so whatever).

How about this? Snagit does a lot but not what he needs. So he needs to add something so he can continue with the workflow. If he needs a program get recordings and mark them up beyond the capabilities of snagit, then Screencast-o-matic is  reasonable choice. There are others and all are free to choose
It is simply filling a hole in snagit capabilities

How about this; the forum is to support TechSmith products and video editing forums or Google are for researching alternatives. Would you go to an AutoZone website and ask for opinions on NAPA parts instead? Nobody's making me reply, I'm just puzzled.

Maybe it's just a generational thing; I thought it was obvious. I withdraw.

Well, I was researching on this site for a solution and since I was here I just asked because I can Google what's out there, but was looking for recommendations and not just keyword hits.  And, being that this company also makes Camtasia, which I was looking at myself because it seems much more suited for video capture than snag-it, I specified the other company thing since I figured anyone would just recommend Camtasia and I was worried problems I have with Snag-it may be present in Camtasia since it's made by the same company.

"Well, like I said I fixed it. " What was the issue?

The 13.1 update.  "Fixed it" was probably bad wording.  I uninstalled it, deleted the appdata folders, and tried reinstalling.  Same issue.  So I uninstalled and deleted the appdata folders again (Techsmith folders in Local and Roaming) and installed the older version whose installer I still had in my downloads.

That got rid of the video recording error I was getting and brought back a display issue I was having previously with the Editor (black background that would hold trails if I was drawing an arrow or placing a stamp), but since I knew that might happen I copied the javascript file that was the problem and replaced it after the install was complete.

I did not get 13.1 working, though, unfortunately.

Got it. It's probably best to put in a tech support ticket to get that squared away properly. TechSmith Support Information http://support.techsmith.com/

Question asked and answered thats all. The video capture in snagit is extremely limited and it is a giant jump to Camsata which in my case is way beyond my needs. I am also looking for a program that will capture text from images. I hope that will not cause a problem
