Animating custom shapes (well, a hexagon!)

Well, this turned out to be less obvious than I anticipated. I am creating an intro video and there are a few that are fine from the library. However, my site is about beekeeping so I really want to replace the shapes used with a hexagon.

Unfortunately, the shapes I see as available are very limited (see below). Is there no way to specify a hexagon here or, if not, somehow upload some image I can use as the shape?

Thank you.

draw your own hexagon, save as an image [png of jpg], then bring it into Camtasia; put in Library for future use at anytime in any project

to add to what Rick has said, use manually added animation keyframes on the shape to "animate" the shape; you should be able to make it do whatever you want

Thank you, Rick. That made sense. I'd found a few threads were folks were suggesting pulling in custom images as a way to get this done, but the distinction between a (Camtasia) shape and an image makes sense to me.

So, this begs the question, if I step back and focus on the scenario at hand, is there any way way to add a SHAPE to Camtasia (as opposed to an image), such that it will show up in the dropdown?

That would be good, since I could then  just change the dropdown and be done. But I am guessing there's no way to import/model a shape, beyond the few that Camtasia lists, right?

If the answer is no, which I suspect, I guess I will have to start delving into creating my own animations. :) I am sure that's quite feasible, but I would really have liked to have just changed the Octagon to a Hexagon :)

Thank you again.

Hello again

Unfortunately there is no way I'm currently aware of to make that happen. Sorry.

As far as I'm aware, the shapes listed in the dropdown are baked into the product. To see more shapes, the Camtasia developers would have to add them in and we all would have to install updates or newer versions of Camtasia to see them.

Creating animations via the Animations tab > Custom is both super fun and frustrating. But it's a decent skill to have a handle on. I'm presently in the throes of creating some visual  things for an annual fundraising concert and I get to exercise this particular skill a LOT.

In the image below, I've selected each of the animation arrows to demonstrate the different images I'm animating.

Cheers... Rick :)

I'm not sure I see the problem with developers adding in more shapes (if folks don't need the extra shapes then can just ignore them) but that aside, I take your point about learning animations.

I am not adverse to that but I have a huge webinar next week (500 registered), which is far more than I have ever done before :) I have decided to add polish to my webinars, which I have been meaning to do for a year or so! But I am up against a tight deadline to get this and all the content done as I would like. And the lack of "Hexagon" in that dropdown is so frustrating.

I will learn animations soon, but so many hours in the day and all that :)

Thank you again, Rick.

PS: If I wasn't in the beekeeping niche I'd just go with an octagon :)

Oh, okay, so you want to be able to change your shape into a hexagon from that menu?

If that's the case, adding a PNG file will not help you since that's a raster image.

At least, not through Camtasia's UI itself.

I would just draw a bunch of sizes and colors of your shape, batch export, and drop the files into your library. I do this all the time and it works all right.

Or...

Thinking out loud here...

I wonder if you could modify one of the XML files in the install folder to create a hexagon shape by replacing the existing svg code with the code for a hexagon... You might destroy Camtasia and have to re-install but maybe it would work?

(Probably don't try that lol)

Thank you. While wanting to kick someone at Camtasia for not adding more shapes to the dropdown :) I am curious about the first suggestion. For example, you'd create a number of hexagons and then create your own animation sequence using these, changing orientation and so on?

My first reaction would be that there'd be some jumpiness as I transitioned between image sizes, but I'm guessing that's not an issue from what you have said.

Sadly, I found a feature request posted to add some more shapes, but that was two years ago so I'm not expecting that to be addressed any time soon.

Tell me exactly what you want to do and how you want it to look--odds are I've done something similar on some past project. Or you can go to File -> Export as Zip and upload the project to dropbox and I can open it on my end (I don't need any video clips or anything beyond whatever it is you're working on).

Or you can render a video of the scene you want with the hexagons and I can probably throw together something with the animations.

One of my bright ideas for Techsmith was creating a user collaboration community. I also have to train about a dozen people on Camtasia in the next few months so this could be good practice haha

Thanks so much, Kayakman, I never fail to learn from you.
One of these days I'll watch the other 430 videos you've made (I've seen only 5). Do you have a TOC?

I appreciate the kind words, Muscle Whisperer

my Camtasia "help" videos are hosted in 2 collections on screencastg.com; both are in "public" folders

https://www.screencast.com/users/cookbookplusman/folders/Camtasia%20Tutorials

https://www.screencast.com/users/cookbookplusman/folders/Quick%20Answers

regarding a "TOC", if you sign in to screencast.com [a free accounts works just fine], just put the UI in "details" view

the various titles will be listed; probably best to sort "A - Z"

you can use the search tool to look for subjects of interest by "keyword"; I try to use relevant keywords in the titles; so using "caption" will list all items pertaining to captions

you might need a bigger pot of coffee; there are currently 435 tutorials and 149 quick answers

thanks for watching :)
