Animations Crashing Camtasia 2020 consistently

I recently upgraded from 2019 to 2020 on a Windows 10machine.  Nearly every time I try to usea simple animation to zoom in or out the program instantly locks up.  I am I the only one experiencing this?!!  EXTREMELY AGGRAVATING... wish I'd stuck with2019 as I'm unable to complete a single video production!

I haven't had issues in using animation features with recent versions of Camtasia at all.    Past versions from years ago, yes, it did crash sometimes, but I was doing rather ridiculous animations like this.   Something that did help, I found, was to export the project so everything was in one place: File>Export  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBk6LMAuxTE

Are you using Camtasia 2020?  I had zero problems with Camtasia 2019 but 2020?  A simple zoom in on a video clip forces me to deploy the blue screen of death to get out of the locked up program... aggravating, especially since other new features of 2020 are nice like the Favorites option and bigger 'handles' on video clip segment ends...

Camtasia 2020, yes.  No issues with zoom or other animations.

Ive also upgraded to 2020 and have massive issues with animations. I can generally make 1 move and quickly save before it just lock up then shuts down. Then I have to wait for the slow opening up again to make my next edit and the process continues.
Moving a single zoom to just the right position may take many rounds of this.
Its beyond frustrating and causing me to miss many deadlines.
I have a service ticket and have sent log files but no answer yet. Hopefully the next release will be soon.

Odd, I've used extensive animations without so much as a glitch.
Have you tried disabling your graphics card as a test?

@brad.mobbs exactly the problem I had... infuriating!
Tech Support sent me a link to a 'pre-release version' of Camtasia 2020 which I was able to install 'over' my current version, preserving my Library, Favorites, etc.  Seems far too simple but it was a quick 99.9% fix.  I've had a few crashes since but from doing an edit after leaving a file open and dormant for a couple hours... at least that's when I notice it.
See if they'll send you that pre-release version... hope that helps.  I can forward my tech support case # if you need it for reference...

@thetimbertailor I have also installed the pre-release version successfully but it did not fix the issue with animations. I've sent more log files.
I read on an older similar thread that going into Preferences/Advanced and setting the hardware acceleration to "Use Software-only Mode" might help. I've got a heap of training videos to get through so I'll give that a try today. Got to find something that works as this issue is killing my deadlines, every video takes hours longer with the repeated crashes and reopening of the program and I really need to use the zoom and pan feature.

Boy do I hear you on the 'issue is killing my deadlines' thing!!  Let us know if the 'Use Software-only Mode' thing helps at all?   Hope you get things resolved so you can wrap up some stuff!

Clint, I tried the update but I'm already using 2020.0.3. I expect that was the version I was sent a pre-release link for a few days ago. Camtasia say I'm running the latest version but still crashing is happening every time I try to use animations, every time without fail. I've sent at least 4 sets of log files using the service program as instructed but none have actually made it to the tech. So your automated service program is not so good either.
I've now received instructions to collect some text files manually and email them and to upload the crash logs direct to the tech. Hopefully these files will shed some light on the issue.
I really like the program so far, I've got some good results and want to explore all its functions but if cant get past a basic zoom or pan its of no use. 2019 also crashed a bit but maybe 10% as often as 2020. Maybe I should go back to 2019 as other users have suggested  but that seems to be a retrograde step for a product I paid good money for.

check the build number on your 2020.0.3.

current, release build is 22309; if you were using a pre-release copy, you probably have an earlier build; latest build is what you want to use [check on help/about menu]

if using an earlier build, you should download the current Camtasia 2020 free trial, uninstall the 2020 you currently have, then install the trial/current release build

I had to do the same; have found that many 2020.0.3. bugs are indeed fixed in release build

@brad.mobbs, the fix for animations in 2020.0.3 was merged just prior to the release being tested and cut.  So it's quite possible that you got a build prior to this fix.  As @kayakman suggested, you can check the build number.  If it is earlier than the released version you will need to uninstall the version you have, and install the release version.

Thanks kayakman and Dave, I've checked the version and you were correct it was not 22309. I've done as suggested, downloaded the new version, deleted the old and then reinstalled and I'm not running 22309. Install was without issue.
I've done some quick testing by dropping a heap of animations onto a short video plus editing them randomly, moving some on the timeline, changing the zoom and position of others, basically everything I could think off and no crash. Previously it would have 100% crashed on pretty much every change so initial testing it seems to be fixed.
I'll get stuck into some new edits tomorrow (to catch up) so that will be a longer test but finger crossed it looks good.
Thanks for the help from the group members and the Techsmith guys. I think it really helps the developers to sort issues quickly if users can work with them and each other, so thanks.

how do you check the build number?  Not sure what I'm using but do know that I'm now getting frequent crashes when I add new media to the timeline.  I'm building a long, heavily edited video which would have caused a few crashes in 2019 but not EVERY time... maybe I'm stuck with a glitchy build?

Looks like I'm using build 21833.  Do 'we' know what's the most stable/crash free build of 2020?  I'm getting near constant crashes that require using Task Manager to End Task which is listed as "Suspended".  Adding a new video clip to Media and then to the timeline is all it takes to stop production dead in its tracks... frustrating!

current version is 2020.0.3. build 22309

get it by downloading the free trial off TechSmith web site

if your build is 2020.0.3. [??], you will need to uninstall that before installing the new build

Hi thetimbertailor,

I'm sorry you're running into crash issues like this. If you haven't already, please open a ticket at https://support.techsmith.com/\. They should be able to collect some data and help troubleshoot.

Thanks Glenn... I've got an ongoing ticket to address this but thanks for your attention to my frustration.  BTW if you're a coder at Camtasia I REALLY appreciate the 'favorites' list and the much more user friendly 'handles' at the ends of clip segments on the timeline that were added to the 2020 version... both significant time savers during editing IMHO.

My 2020.0.2 was crashing for me while working on my latest project. I Counted at least  5 crashes on this one project reported to technical support last week. I also noticed that when I went to move media on the timeline it crashed. This had not happened in 2019. Not sure if related to your issues but a crash is a crash.

@Clint Hoagland: are you saying that 2020.0.3 is the best version to run to avoid glitchy issues we've been having with 2020 since upgrading?

My  philosophy is never upgrade without a strong compelling reason.

Read the maintence release notes. If Camtasia is stable, theres noting in there to get excited about.
Then if it ain't broke. Don't fix it.

Regards,Joe

Never mind, I thought it said track Recorder. Duh!
Clean my glasses LOL
It means you can drag a track to a different level.  Upward or downward to stack them in another order.

OK; good to know; just tested and it's now there

when I first heard about it [some weeks ago], it was listed as Mac only so far; looks like they plugged it in with 2020.0.3.
