Audio distortion ONLY when played from timeline

Hi all - this is in Camtasia Studio v7.1.1

I'm recording PC screen capture with simultaneous audio v/o. After recording, the preview playback sounds perfect. But when I play back with the clip in the timeline, the audio is very distorted; lots of cracking and popping. The levels are not that high so that's not the problem, but the playback in the timeline kind of sounds as if it is. I backed off the level to around 80% from the default 100% and still have it. If I double-click to pay the clip in the preview window, it's fine. Exact same thing for recording voice narration only. Only in the timeline is the audio distorted.

I've used a standalone desk mic (Logitech), my PC headset (also Logitech) and another PC headset (Plantronics). I know the desk mic should work because I recorded vids on this same PC last year using it and it was fine.

HELP???? And thanks in advance.

Well, somehow I fixed it. In the Audio settings I first turned on "Enable noise removal" and then playback was fine, but very muffled. I'm not in an especially loud area. Then I lowered the sensitivity little by little (100 is the default) and no problems, then finally turned it back off entirely and all playback is fine!!??? It's fixed, but aggravating in the lost time anyhow...
