This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: I want to record system audio with Snagit

In the new SnagIt 11 it is nice there is no limit on your recording time for video. I would like to know if there is a way to setup your default for the mic being used? I did not find this setting inside the program unless I overlooked it. Also, can you record system audio or is it still only available using Camtasia Studio? Thanks and I am happy with the new SnagIt 11 Features. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the questions!

There isn't a way to set up a default recording device at this time, although when you open up the video recorder for a new recording, we do try to default to using the same recording device you used the last time you successfully recorded a video.

As for system audio, I'm afraid that feature is not available in Snagit at this time. We appreciate the heck out of the feedback though, and it will definitely be considered in the future.

We're ecstatic to hear that you're enjoying Snagit 11! Please keep sending the thoughts and feedback so we can keep up with the pleasing! :)

I am frustrated by this as well. I have a headset and the internal mic is so much better. Why did I find these directions online then?
This does not seem to work on my new updated version of snagit 11.
I am a heavy jing and camtasia user, and I would love to use snagit now for most of my videos but the sound quality is bad as is.

There's a few great questions here. Let me try to break this down one by one for others who might come here.

1. Can I use any mic to record? Yes. If you like your internal mic's quality better than your webcam or headset, you should be able to select it with Snagit. If you can't see it, my guess is it's not being recognized by Windows, and you might want to open a support ticket with our Tech Support team. ( )

2. Can you set the default mic? No, but Snagit remembers and tries to use the last mic you told it to.

3. System audio? No, at this time system audio recording is not supported in Snagit.

The instructions Leave Comments is referring to are the old AVI-based recording in an earlier version of Snagit and are not applicable to Snagit 11.

Thanks for the audio discussion! It can get a bit tricky, but I hope this helped a little.

How do I capture a website AND the site's audio-livestreaming? If I select to capture with audio recording, Snagit assumes the audio source is my voice via microphone. That's not what I want. Please advise, thanks!

SnagIt 11 when recording a video will only capture your microphone and not system audio. There are some ways to accomplish this but, it would be with other external equipment like a small mixer board, etc. You could try a 30-Day Free Trial of Camtasia Studio 8 as it has the option to record system audio for you. I hope this answers your question and thanks for posting. Have a great day!

Thank you for the quick response, which appropriately addressed my question. It is the system audio that I was looking for a way, what capture mode, would include it. I'm disappointed to hear your latest version of Snagit (11) does not support this currently. I hope you do manage to add this option in your next upgrade, as it is an important feature, considering many websites now offer the visitor the option to listen, rather than read, the textual content on the site.

I was attempting to put together a training doc for my step-mom, who's in her 80's, and suffering from macular degeneration, making it almost impossible to see now.

I will look into Camtasia, though I'm not thrilled about having to purchase another product just to be able to capture system audio, and am not looking forward to the challenge of figuring out how to combine/configure a Snagit capture using an external program with one output that includes both functions.

Thanks for your assistance!

Just a quick note to let you know we’ll be updating Snagit 11 (Windows) in early October to add support for system audio capture...and for selecting a microphone. I’m merging the many threads on this topic into one; if you want to receive notification when the feature becomes available, please +1 or reply to the master topic here:
