autosaved project not opening

My computer crashed after I edited a project for 20 minutes, and I went to the Auto-Saves folder when the computer restarted to find an autosaved version. I did find one, but Camtasia says it is not a valid .tscproj file when it clearly is.

I think Camtasia has to open it. Whenever I crash, I open Camtasia first and use the link on the opening dialog to open the file. It says something like "Camtasia did not shut down normally. Do you want to open the autosaved version or the original?" If you select the autosaved version, it usually opens OK and you may have a minute or two of work missing. But I have had situations where nothing worked. The project was forever corrupted and I had to open a new project and start over with the original recording (.trec).

I'm wondering if it might be worth trying to just create a totally new project and save it to get the TSCProj file. Then try opening the "corrupt" file using something like Windows Notepad, copying most or all of the content, then pasting into the new pristine file.

I've seen that error before; usually after a project file has been corrupted

a single missing character is all it takes to generate that error

if you look at a project file with a text editor, you'll see that most lines end with a ","

if one of those characters gets dropped, the project won't open
