Basic improvements that would really help using the SnagIt editor

I've been a user of SnagIt for quite a few years now and I'd really like to see some common (and some not so basic if possible) improvements to the editor that would massively help and fix some pretty basic things.

Perhaps a number of these are already possible and I just haven't come across them because I'm stuck in my ways and haven't discovered a way to do it. So, and main list is in no particular order...

1. When saving a new capture (Save as...), why doesn't it place the new saved capture at the front of the list of items in the thumbnail panel below?! I've no idea why the old one goes ahead of the new one (problem gets worse with multiple existing captures). It makes it difficult to find the most recent file you've been editing after having moved to another one and then want to go back. For example, I usually find myself searching for the most recent saved capture but it's 8 places back in the queue because I'll have 15 thumbnails/captures in the panel! Just put my latest saved capture at the front of the queue so I don't have to try and find it in the middle of a list somewhere when I know where it should be.

2. Allow re-ordering of thumbnails would also be massively helpful - simple drag & drop along the thumbnail panel to help organize the different items you're editing would be enough. If that's too much work, I'd even settle for a move left/right right-click menu option on a thumbnail and deal with the repetitiveness of that.

3. Make the font selection combox box list longer by default. Only showing 6 isn't helpful when it comes to scrolling and scanning quickly to find a font. I currently always resize the list so I can easily see the available fonts.

4. When you've got a label selected and want to change the font, can you set the default selection in the drop-down to the current font of the label. For example, if you've got the content of your label selected and it's on a particular font (e.g. Segoe UI) but want to change it - it's always on Arial when you open the drop-down. Why isn't the current font selected in the list by default? I'm looking at a 6 item font list in the wrong place so begin by resizing the length of the list, scrolling, down to find Segoe UI and then change it to Segoe UI Light. Why not just default the selection to the font the label currently has? It's pretty standard and expected behavior.

5. Support for basic copy/paste of PNGs with transparency that are in the clipboard. Currently have to go to open file browser, locate the file, choose it, select it in SnagIt (which opens it in a new thumbnail, copy it and paste it into the screen grab I was working on. Could just copy and paste an image into a capture like most other apps behave.

6. Allow the basic changing of properties for items that share the same properties. For example, if you have 5 labels selected - can I change the font size for those 5 labels at the same time? Or their colour? Or the font family they belong to? I select 7 rectangles and want to change their background colour at the same time - can I do that at once to stop me repeatedly having to do 1 at a time?

7. Please support entering a simple hex value when wanting to specify a colour. I really don't want to keep entering RGB colours into 3 text fields. I just want to copy/paste a hex value I've got on the clipboard and move on. Just adding an extra text entry field for a hex value to the existing dialog would be enough.

8. Please stop indicating that a saved file/capture has changed when I've simply selected something and not changed a single thing. I end up with a a bunch of files with an orange coloured asterix symbol on the thumbnail indicating a change has happened when that's simply not true.

9. Stop the text label content from moving/shifting when simply resizing the label area to the right (assumes standard left alignment on the text). It then brings the current label content out of alignment with other items (e.g. other labels) above and below it. I often resize the label to the right when I'm editing the text to pre-emptively stop the wrapping behaviour which requires even more effort to fix when turning back into a single line.

10. Reduce all of the padding around a label when it's on a single line. It's not needed and makes selection between different items on the page really difficult at times because of all the overlapping problems it causes due to superfluous  padding.

11. Allow the editing of an item within a group. just a standard double-click on a particular item to select it within its group and be able to change its properties. I'm currently having to ungroup items, make changes to a label (for example), re-select all of the items that I'd previously grouped and group them again. Only wanted to increase the font size of a single label in the group.  :(

This might go beyond a simple editor, but something that would be amazing to have in the most basic of implementations would be:

12*. Pretty please add either simple snapping type functionality or even really basic horizontal/vertical guide lines to appear when moving an item to help with aligning it to other items or helping see spacing. Maybe this already exists? This would be my number 1 request.

Any chance that some of these problems or enhancements could be done? Improving the core editor for your product might not be a priority and adding more new features is the plan.

Would be nice to know either way if these would be considered and chances of being implemented. Any of the following responses to some/any of the points would be appreciated: it's a definite 'never' or the ambiguous 'maybe', or 'on the roadmap within the next 6 - 12 months' or 'coming soon' (i.e. within 1 - 2 months).

Maybe all of them are already possible and I've just been using the editor incorrectly.

I would definitely never reply with maybe to such an excellent post. I would suspect that at least one of the above will make to the roadmap in 6 - 12 months, if not 1-2 months.

There, got all 6 in 1 comment (grin)

Heh. Actually, a lot of the above are actually pretty VERY good requests. While many of them are in the "Tweak for Improved Action" Category, After the ... well... *!!*  that is version 12++, something like this would be awesome.

I like the thought : Stop adding new stuff. Fix the stuff that you have. add options to the core stuff... THEN add more

Thanks for the reply Patrick.

Some of these "tweaks" would seriously improve the overall experience with SnagIt and I'd suggest/argue that they aren't just personal requests from a grumpy user - the changes would certainly apply and help a large number of other SnagIt customers or evaluators during the trial period. Supporting hex value input for colours doesn't feel like too much of a stretch.

Quite a number of the points would just make the tool much more consistent with how most other apps out there have implemented the same functionality but in a much more refined and efficient way. You can describe some of the current implementation choices as 'non-optimal' when they are actually seriously frustrating after a short period of time.

I just don't understand the rationale for the 'Save as...' behaviour and moving the old/original version to front of the queue as 1 particular example.

Hopefully one or two of the tweaks will make it in during 2016. Maybe your product designers can twist enough arms to spend a little time improving the core product.

One thing I I do not understand/ like is... If I SAVE a file... then a day later, I DELETE the saved file, I have 2 options the next time I load Snag-it.

  1. Re-save the file, putting it BACK
  2. declining to do so, LOOSING THE THUMBNAIL!
C'mon, WHY must I loose the thumbnail, just cuz I don't need the saved copy I made???

[edit]Not sure I understand the description properly and it matching what I'm saying.[/edit]

Just to clarify the scenario that's confusing about the current implementation:

- I've been using the tool and have a mixture of captures in the thumbnail panel (some have been saved by me to disk with an explicit name as PNGs) and some are just there as the automatically cached captures.
- I now edit one of my existing explicitly saved/named captures that's in some position in the thumbnail panel (e.g. position 5 of the 12 that I have).
- I make a couple of changes to it, click Save as... give it a new name in order to save it as the most recent version/capture.
- The current magic behaviour is that the original V1 saved file now jumps to position 1 in the thumbnail panel (ahead of every other saved captures that, by date and time, were created after it) and leaves the latest saved file sitting back in position 5 in the panel.

I could not agree with you more, especially fixing what is broken.

I've been using SnagIt for many a long year to capture images for Help file development (Flare), so am not exactly new to it.

Perhaps this exists and I have simply not found it, but I really would like the ability to be able to "nudge" graphics in extremely small amounts.  All too often I find the need to do this when I have one on top of another, and find I have covered a period for example, in the one behind.  I do NOT want to have to slow down my mouse just for that.

Does holding down the Shift key and using the arrow key in whatever direction you want to nudge the graphic do what you want? It's usually how I do 'nudges'. Apologies if I've misunderstood.

holding the ALT key while moving does NOT allow fine tuning, as it does most other places (Like Word) BUT, as stated above, Hold the Shift key and use the arrow keys... works great. 1 pixel width at a time.
