Blur tool lost ability to select freehand shapes to blur, only rectangular shape areas are now selectable making the tool far less useful. Previous versions allowed freehand shape areas to blur.

+1 for me as well. However, I seem to recall that the last version also didn't offer the ability to draw a freehand selection to blur. I'm not sure when that performed a disappearing act, but it wasn't there in version 12.

Cheers... Rick :)

Right. In version 12 already, the Blur tool (an essential tool for me) was made difficult to use, with fewer usage options than in version 11.

Unfortunately,

SnagIt 13  cannot apply a freehand blur effect either.

This was regretfully removed starting 11.4.x
Not sure whether this got on the wishlist and if so whether it will be considered.
(In both cases, wishlist/consideration: I don't think so)

I know this is an old thread, but I read it just now as I was trying to find an answer to the same question, so maybe someone else will find this helpful. After making a freehand selection, you can blur it (or the inverse) using the "Spotlight and Magnify" function.

I am trying to do the same, and have used the freehand selection, but when I try to switch to the magnify function, my freehand area disappears. I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas?  How do I retain that free hand area to Magnify?

Sounds like you are using the Magnify tool. What you are looking for is "Spotlight and Magnify" in the Effects panel.

Completely agree, jwpoore! The blur tool has been ruined without the option to select the area to blur with any of the selection tools. Please bring back freehand, polygon and ellipse selection capability Techsmith!
(I still miss the spray paint textured blur tool too!!! That's going way back to what, v8?!)
