Bring back the Library from any version before '18

This really doesn't need to be an idea.  I've lived by SnagIt for 15 years and the changes to the recent list of files at the footer and library are beyond bad.  I truly dislike using SnagIt now because every time I need it the most, it fails completely because I can't access my files.  The older model was brilliantly simple & fast.  Please, just undo this.  I've lost an afternoon of work because I have to use Paint to see my files.  Grrrrr.

Hello,

As a long-time user I am puzzled by this comment. When you click on 2018's Library link (upper LH corner) can you not see all of your captures by dates? (tags and other filters there as well) I see my captures back to 2013 (SnagIt 11 I believe was current then).

Perhaps something went wrong during installation to where it didn't preserve this access properly. Someone more conversant with SnagIt may shed some more light on this.

All I'm able to say is that I see what Timbre4 sees. My list of captures goes back to 2008. And I've even monkeyed a bit with the location of where they are stored. I'm not saying that Philip's claim is invalid, just that it doesn't seem to be the case for me either.

Philip, you might consider filing a support request from TechSmith to see if they can assist.

I'm with Phillip. I don't want to see my captures by date. I want a directory tree as Snagit had in 2010 and earlier. When Tech Smith removed this feature in the 2011 version, many long-time users strongly objected. We were told, "too bad. New users found the Library feature to be confusing," which seemed very odd. The decision seemed to be that new users are more valuable than long-time existing users and that, perhaps, Snagit was unable to find a way to inform new users how to use the Library. Because Tech Smith was unresponsive, many long-time users said they would look for different tools and, thus, may no longer be participating in this forum.

Others besides Rick and Timbre4 have said that the Library as it is now works for them. It does not work for me and, yes, I have tried everything people have suggested. The feature I need (being able to browse and find all my captures where I have stored them) is just not there. I see "Windows Explorer" but there is no way to browse and no way to tell why Snagit decided to display only two of the hundreds of graphics I have on my hard drive and where exactly those two images are.

Although I have upgraded to the 2011 and 2018 versions, I do not use them: I use 2010 so I can find what I need. I did try the 2018 version but I do not like the interface at all. In addition, Snagit changed the stamps for numbers and there is no way I am renumbering all my images so they are consistent with the new look. Why would Tech Smith do that? Certainly you can add new stamps but why take away the existing ones?

The original post sounded like Library was BLANK; at least that's the way I read it. perhaps Phillip will elaborate or he filled out a help ticket.

As for the directory tree, I'd like to understand what that looked like on your side. When I use Library in the new version that seems like a fixed directory tree with year, then month, day and I find what I need. Do you file them by subject or project name or ?

I haven't made use of it too much, 2018 version also has an Applications option (captures per app screens), followed by Web sites option (captures per website name) and finally Tags (user tags applied to captures). So there are other options besides strictly using dates.

Re-reading your comment, "no way to browse" - if I have actually saved and named them (pretty rare anymore since the library works for me), then File, Open, browse to that saved folder still works if I need a capture by product, topic, 2005, etc.

Forgive me, I'm just trying to understand why so much passion about this aspect.

EDIT: I'd think you could add prior stamps to the current version by dropping them in the right folder. haven't done this for 2018 but did for version 13 successfully. Will check on that.

Success! I found the SnagIt Stamps folder in my Documents folder. Looked inside and saw all of the old entries and copied them to SnagIt 2018 as shown. Then when I click on Stamp, I have everything (old and new) available. There is an Organize Stamps option I should probably use, anyway this should help.

It was called "Folders View" you got to all your Images using the Windows file system.

Pick a folder and double click it. The images all appear in the viewing area in the canvas area. Which is not the canvas at the time. But I don't know what it's called during this state.

You can drag images down to the open capture bar at the bottom of the editor until you collect various images from different locations and switch to the editor.

You can drag images from the center into another folder to change it's file location permanently.

The system has a lot of appeal for a lot of reasons .

Navigating through all those folders was a little clunky at times. I was aggravated by just how many folders I had to open and sort through at times.
It was my organizational skills that was hurting me and slowing me down more than anything else.

Thanks for the background, I remember that now. Doesn't really impact my workflow with software screens because A) screens change and then need to be re-captured every so often and B) since it's so simple to pop them directly into a Camtasia or document I see no need to name or catalog them anymore. Different strokes.... :)

If you use a lot of Stamps. Like the huge selection "Super Stamps" they sell on TechSmith website. This is perfect for that. sorting through them. I don't use them myself.

I can envision situations where power users save a lot of time using folders.

The library works for my purpose.

However, it seems like they could have kept folders view as an option. Granted I'm no software engineer. The foundation of the system relied on the windows folder structure. Which they don't have to maintain.
So it would seem to be an easy option to offer. Or it would create huge problems due to conflicts with the new library system.lol
