I am losing my patience over this one.which has appeared in 2018 AFAIK
I am fed up with playing find the needle in the haystack when trying to grab the edge of an mage or an object to move or resize it. Precisely selecting a grab handle / corner doesn't work for resizing to have to move the mouse around in the vicinity until the move cursor briefly, oh so briefly, changes to resize.
99% of the time, whatever you do, the move function remains present. Except when you have a very small object such as an icon that you want to move. Then, getting the cursor to change to the move function is difficult, and when it does, and you drag the object to move it, one side of the object gets dragged out in a resize operation.
Bug, bug, bug, bug, bug

Is this what you do?
I'm a Photoshop user so my workflow leans towards PS. In PS every object is placed on a layer. A layer must be selected before you can do anything with it. It is for all intensive purposes, locked in place.Well, you won't be moving or resizing it. There's several ways to effect it indirectly and directly but that's not important here.
When I do annotating in SnagIt. If I resize a Shape, Callout, etc.
The first thing I do is "Click it to Select It". The resizing handles appear, are easy to grab, and you can move easily as well.
If I understand the problem. I don't have the bug you report.
However, Far to often. when I select an object to highlight it, IT MOVES a little bit.
They shouldn't have hardwired the move tool into the selection tool. It's a flaw and not a bug.Aggravating as well.
PS has a Auto select function.I use it occasionally. It doesn't move anything unless you have the move tool selected at that time.
Regards,Joe

I'm not 100% sure if this is what is being discussed here, but I've got something that is eerily similar if not the same thing. I recorded a video to demonstrate.

BINGO! That's one of my issues.
The other is that very small objects are difficult to move because while the move cursor (crosshairs) appear on mouseover. one side of the small object does a resize instead. I had an object that was doing it, but as soon as I turned on video recording the little f****r behaved properly. Grrrrrr.

I managed to reproduce it. Here's a very short gif. You may need to slow it down to see what happens but I have looked carefully and I can report that the crosshair cursor (move object) appears BUT if you left click your mouse without moving it, the crosshair switches to a resize cursor and drags the image out instead of moving it.

No, I've seen them work here. I'm not sure what's different about that one. But I've seen them work before.
Something else that doesn't work is the embedding of ScreenCast.com. I thought that odd at first. I mean, what with this being TechSmith's forum and all. Then I realized that all TechSmith is doing is renting space from GetSatisfaction. So they are subject to the limitations of GetSatisfaction.

Today I did a repair on my installation and, later, you had me reset my system.
As a result of one or both of those actions my cursor now has pinpoint accuracy.
Go figure.

Repair installs can fix a lot of nagging bugs. It's been my go to move for years.

Hi Paul;
Thanks for the update; I'm going to leave the ticket we have open a bit longer just in case we can duplicate or have others bring up the issue.

Just as well you didn't close it Robert, because it's back

Look how far out from the corner I had to go to find the resize action
Dammit. Everything else on my PC is working fine and the software app I help product manage is a process modelling tool with boxes to draw and resize and all that stuff . So it can't be my PC. I was in email conversation with Chris about this and I have just sent him the same feedback

LOL, toldya! ;)
For me it seems to come and go. Especially after initially rebooting the PC and/or restarting SnagIt. For a short while all is well in happy land. Precision pointers. But as time progresses, it gets worse and worse.
I'm guessing this is one of those very elusive bugs. My gut says that in the end they will find it has to do with that darned scaling in Windows. But I'm not a real developer. So it's anyone's guess!

As a test you might try to disable enhance-pointer-precision.
Not saying it will be the fix but it might and worth a shot.
Gamers usually disable this option for better mouse control.

That's an interesting article! I was viewing it full screen and slowly dragged my mouse from the lower left corner to the upper right. Seems to use a substantial area of the mouse pad. but if I quickly dragged, it did cover substantially more screen based on the actual physical movement. I'd never noticed that before.

Dubie! I think you may be on to something too. A repair and a reset 24 hours ago fixed the problem, but it came back again today. I turned off enhanced pointer precision and now everything works again.
It'd be premature to say the problem is solved but here's hoping....!

Fingers crossed.
You may experience that it may get turned back on for a couple of reasons.
One is if you sync computers with a Microsoft account.
Windows 10 automatically sync various settings between your PCs if you sign in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft chose to sync your mouse settings including the “Enhance Pointer Precision” option by default.
To stop Windows 10 syncing your mouse settings, head to Settings > Accounts > Sync Your Settings. Disable the “Other Windows settings”

Another may be a mouse utility software like
SetPoint
IntelliPoint
Razer Synapse
logitech etc.
So you may have settings in it that effect mouse precision or it may just want
pointer-precision on.
If the utility software keeps turning it on you may have to see if you can stop it from running at boot.
Open the Task Manager, locate the utility on the Startup tab, right-click it and select “Disable”.
Note:
The utilities additional features—like button-remapping, profiles, battery life monitoring, or firmware updates etc. you won't be able to use without launching the utility.
Good Luck :)

Thanks Dubie.
Fortunately I am not syncing computers, and my mouse uses native Win 10 controls - no Intellipoint etc. So I should be good.
I had to play with the mouse speed after the change was made. And mouse tails seemed to become more intrusive, so they went.
Fingers crossed.

You are not going to believe this, but your fix is great for allowing me to get hold of the grab handles. Good.
Now my problem has inverted itself. Not so good. On very small items, I now cannot figure out how to get the MOVE cursor. Frying pan / Fire.

And...... when I draw a small object, it now places it several pixels above and right of where the crosshairs are.
Hmm.......
I will regroup in the morning and decide what to do.

Thanks for picking this up.
I now realise that the repercussions of this go much further. I have been tearing my hair out for weeks over the fact that when I try to resize an object, I end up creating a tiny object of the same type. It drives me nuts (and, incidentally, getting rid of the little beast is a nightmare. Ctrl+Z to undo would seem logical, but it doesn't work).
When you are accustomed to grabbing and dragging the corner control you don't look that closely at the screen. But today, after the umpteenth occurence of the issue and whilst hurling expletives at it, I slowed down and watched what was happening.
If you haven't sussed it by now, it is that because of the inaccuracy of the various hot spots, I wasn't resizing at all. SnagIt thought I was outside the box borders (even though I was definitely on the corner grab handle), so it treated the click as an instruction to draw a new object.
So, if you fix the hot spot inaccuracy bug, you'll also stop unwanted objects being drawn.
BOGOF ! That has to be worth a look?

To see this behaviour in its most extreme form, draw a callout that has a pointer.
Now try to grab the end of the pointer to adjust the end point. Sometimes I can NEVER select the grab handle.

Well Dubie,
I think you might be on to something.
I've been selecting edges with precision for a very long time. No issues whatsoever. I've been following this thread.
I've made shapes so small I couldn't hardly see them. Still , grabbed the handles every time.
I use a Logitech Programmable Gaming Mouse. https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/product/g502-proteus-spectrum-rgb-gaming-mouse
It's fully programmable and bypasses Windows enhance-pointer-precision controls.I called Logitech and asked them just to be certain. They confirmed it.
Here's me selecting a very small shape with precision at every grab point.I can get smaller than that, but if I need to, I would zoom into the canvas to do so. Here I was just grabbing at 100% zoom and capturing it.

Yep most gaming mouses (mice?) can usually take full control of mouse functions.
One of my son's who is a really good gamer got a gaming mouse and that thing had more settings and options than most software I use. LOL
That one you have is cool. Looks like a mini starship :)
I don't do many games with my mouse and the logitech wireless one I have works good enough. I find I use my Xbox controller more often for the games I play.
Anyways... Here's to Paul getting the issue figured out.

There's a lot of advantages to using a gaming mouse. I've played and own some computer games. But I prefer games with actual Joysticks. Analog doesn't cut it.
I use it because it's BIG and comfortable to use all day long. Never get cramped fingers.
Weighted, heavy enough to get better control through feel.
Change DPI setting on the fly.
When I make fine adjustments by dragging in After Effects or Photoshop.
I can drop the dpi setting to 200 or 400.That's my lowest choices. I have 5 choices at any given time.
You program in your choices.
You can set up 3 separate profiles. I've never seen a need for more then one.
You can assign any button to do a different function. If I were gaming, that would probably be a good thing.
Wired, wired mice "Never" miss a beat.
Wireless are pretty darn accurate these days. But still flawed. Professional gamers won't touch them.
It doesn't have a lot of extra buttons. You can assign different functions to them.Create macros. It does more things than I need it to do.
This one has a nice wide thumb rest, my thumb never touches the pad and is always at rest. Another Awesome creature comfort.
I've been using a wired Logitech gaming mouse for at least 6 years now. I'll never revert to a standard mouse again.

I'd like to report that a complete reinstallation of SnagIt fixed all my problems with cursor accuracy etc.
Except it was only true for 24 hours, and now I'm back where I started.

Hey everyone!
So excited!
I think I may have found the cause of all those cursor inaccuracies. If you are suffering from the same problem, could you try the same solution and see if it works for you too please?
I noticed that the problem appears after several hours. So I started to think "memory leak," even though I have 16GB.
My solution was to go here and deselect the first option so that the Editor was not always running in the background:

Now I only call up the editor when I need it and close it when I'm done with an individual capture.
So far most of the wooky cursor accuracy issues have disappeared. The exception is that issue with the misplaced insertion point when adding text to call out boxes. That will strike randomly but always fairly early in an editing cycle. That doesn't feel like the same issue as the mouse accuracy.
Anyway, please try it and report back if turning off that option works for you too? Thanks.
To be clear, I don't consider this to be anything more than a workaround. Every time I take a screenshot and want to edit it, I have a 4 second pause while SnagIt loads again. No big deal? Do that 60 times a day and that's 4 minutes wasted. If I didn't have an SSD it'd be even longer I guess.
No, this is purely diagnostic.

Tech Support came up with a fix:
1) Close out of Snagit so that it is not running at all
2) Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and hit the R key to open the Run window.
3) In the Run Window, type the following and then hit Enter: %appdata%\techsmith\
4) Right click on the features.json file and open it in Notepad
5) Change the "Direct2D11" line to false
6) Reopen Snagit and see if the same behavior occurs
If the same problem happens, repeat the steps above. However this time, change Direct2D10 to false as well.

I give them a lot of credit for that. They probably invested more man hours than the combined price of several version upgrades. I think the whole "Free Support" option is great, but possibly to generous an offer. There should be some reasonable limitations. IMO
