SnagIt 2020

I finally bit the bullet and paid for v2020 to check it out.

Toolbar customization is the most horrible I have seen since version 11. v2020 has the most horrible toolbar, there should have been an option for smaller buttons. Even the number of buttons are limited and that toolbar should have been like the MS office toolbar with greater customization able to attach it separately. Programmers think about utilizing the real estate efficiently.

When running SnagIt editor in a window, the toolbar and all the other buttons on the top disappear upon starting the program. You cannot even move the window because you cannot grab it. I resize the window to a small scale and the toolbar and the other buttons appear. After resizing the window the toolbar stays on the screen.

Upon capturing, what's up with the dumb quickbar appearing asking you to save it as a capture an image, record a video, etc... I think the option to capture should be before you press to acivate the capture. It is a redundant step.

I will play with it more a little later but for now this is it.

Looks like you hit an issue that's not that common - it doesn't do that for me.
If it happens all the time, you might want to check into updating your display card drivers.

Also as far as that annoying prompt asking you what you wanted to do, that also seemed like a step back to me when it first appeared  - whatever version of snagit I started with didn't have that - things were simpler back then, but also less flexible.

There is a way to do exactly what you want and once you set it up, it's as simple as your old version of snagit.

I'll post another reply with a screenshot, the screenshot icon seems stuck in this reply...

This is what I see when I launch Snagit manually, I clicked on the presets area on the left, which opened up the bottom half of what you see above -normally it's about half as high.

All you need to do is pick Image on the top left, then pick the type of selection you want to be the default (I like Region) you can probably leave effects and share set to None, and on the right if you want the editor to come up after a capture, turn that on, otherwise if you just want it to go to the clipboard, turn that on.

Now with that set, click the plus [+] icon next to the word presets on the left side, give the new line a good name and on the far right, click where it says "add hotkey' and then press whatever keyboard combo you want.  Years ago this used to be the "print screen" key, but many keyboards have done away with this key so I use "Alt-Shift-C".

Now any time you want to take a capture, just hit the keyboard combo you entered and it will take a capture just the way you like it.

Note this is more flexible than the old version of snagit - you're not limited to just one set of defaults!
You could, for example, have one keystroke bring up an image capture that opens the editor afterwards, and another that just copies to the clipboard, and yet another to kick off a 'delayed' capture, etc...

While it's not exactly as you describe, perhaps the linked support article helps?

My biggest problem currently is the disappearing buttons. My video card drivers are up to date. I have deleted all the .xml files and recreated new ones by restarting. I am working with tech support

I have been a very long time user of Snag-it, way before it could even do video, which I suggested to them several times back then! Anyway, the best release to me by far was 11.4. I use it many, many times each week, and it always works, whether that is on Windows 7 or Windows 10. But I do all the post processing with other tools, which means I do not use their editor at all. When I make changes to the still images, I use Paint Shop Pro. It captures everything flawlessly, with it is images or videos. I have it store all the images or videos into my own defined folders, so I never loose anything, and can always transport my Snag-it data to another computer with no issues. But if you after all or any of the new 'bells & whistles', perhaps a newer version would be for you, in spite of all the draw backs since version 11.4.

Vincent, I agree with you, I own all the versions and before yesterday I had been using v11.4 and it worked great. I still have it installed as a 32bit version. Techsmith decided to screw it up after that with just dumb bells and whistles. I also do use PaintShop Pro.

Cyrus, I watched the video and tried it on my own machine but the behavior is different.

Are you running anything fancy /  special as far as your video card / monitor setup goes?

I've had issues in the past with MSI afterburner's Riva statistics server with snagit, just wondering if something like that could be a factor here.

Just running a NVIDIA GTX 760, nothing fancy. I am also doing what Tech support wants me to do but I will not screw around with my desktop because SnagIt does not work properly.

Com Forum, I had the same issue, all my drivers are up to date. After working with Aaron with Tech support, I did the following;

>> Uninstalled SnagIt 2020.
>> Made sure that everything was out of the Registry too. (Make a copy of .xml files)
>> Reinstalled SnagIt 2020.
>> Rebooted

Now I can see the buttons, but when you maximize the screen some of them disappear on the right side of the toolbar. It is not bad like before. I have posted the pictures above in this thread to see what my screen was looking like.

The last stable version of SnagIt was v11.4, after that they added some bells and whistles but the software went downhill in a bad way. I own all their version and finally installed v2020 but was not impressed.

Hope this will help. All the best
