Camtasia 2 for mac crashes when starting screen recording

One of my tasks at my job is to record & edit webinars as they happen.

Today I went to record a webinar with the screen recording feature of Camtasia 2 for mac and each time I'd click record the program would crash. I'm recording full screen and with system audio. I've done this same process several times with no issues like this. I think this is my first time recording on OSX Yosemite 10.10 so that may have something to do with it.

Now I have a webinar that isn't recorded and a program that isn't functional. Help?

Which version of Camtasia for Mac are you using?  2.8.3 is the latest version, and is the only version that is stable on Yosemite.  It is a free upgrade if you already have version 2.7, or 2.6 or any 2.x version.

Ah, I did have 2.7. Thanks for your help! It seems to be working now that I updated.

I have 2.9.1, supposedly a bug fix for this problem, but it still continues to crash.

I also have 2.9.1 and it crashes in Yosemite immediately. Try to 'Stop Recording' and it immediately crashes - though occasionally it has made the recording. My MBP died with a display card fault, so my other copies of Camtasia for Mac 1.0 and for Windows in Parallels aren't accessible. TechSmith - I am out of action. Solve the problem!

Techsmith responded to me and their suggestion fixed the issue for me - go to preferences and change the setting from 'editor' to 'recorder' - then relaunch. The main editor window doesn't launch again but it is loaded, records, doesn't crash.

I had the same problem with v2.9. I then went to install both v2.8.3 and v2.9 on my Mac. Since then BOTH versions appear to work.

One thing to check is the Recording Name Prefix in the application preferences.

If you have it set to Custom, but the prefix is blank, you will crash when recording.

You can find the preferences under the 'Camtasia 2' menu item in the main menu.

I had the same problem and filled out a support ticket. I got this response and subsequently downloaded the 2.8.3 version and it is now working for me:

Thank you for contacting us. With our 2.9 release, our developers made a conscious decision to move away from QuickTime for our encoding and decoding backbone. Apple has announced that QuickTime is deprecated as a framework (Note: the .mov file format is not going away!), so the decision was made to move to the new AVFoundation framework. While this should allow us to better take advantage of hardware and operating systems going forward, there are some things that we got "for free" with QuickTime that are not currently available. In your case here, a slew of advanced export options are not available right now, as those options were presented directly from QuickTime itself.

While our developers are listening to our customers to see what specific functionality is desired and can be re-added, it will be some time before any of that functionality can be implemented. If those settings are necessary for your output, your best option would be to move back to our 2.8.3 release, our final version to use QuickTime: http://download.techsmith.com/camtasiamac/enu/283/camtasia.dmg

The latest version of Camtasia for Mac is version 2.10.3.  That version should be working fine on 10.10.5.  Versions 2.8.x and early do not work on 10.10.5, so make sure you have the latest version of Camtasia.

If you are still having problems, the best way to get help is to contact our technical support.  https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us/requests/new  It is a free service.
