Looks like I'm the first to comment.

From my perspective, this built blows away "Camtasia 2018 and 2019 Combined" by comparison.

It's loaded with both Requested & New features.
Features that bolster ones creativity abound.

If you were waiting for a reason to Upgrade. Don't take my word for it.

Download the free trial and give it a Whirl.

What features are you excited about exactly? The only I see is that they finally matched decent quality from a webcam so I don't have to use the quicktime hack.

It's 2020, and we STILL can't move captions.

Hey Zack
I participated in beta testing. I would call it an abbreviated study. I had enough time to test drive most or all of the new features.
Due to time constraints, and the volume of new features. I'm uncertain if I used them all.

This PDF pretty much covers it.

  https://www.dropbox.com/s/afqsiqgn2wfko6j/Camtasia-2020-Feature-Overview-Supplemental.pdf?dl=0

Track Mattes is one of my personal favorites. But theres a lot more to like overall.
Timeline editing has been enhanced.
Theres a lot media bin improvements.
The recorders been improved.

Read the PDF, check out the videos.
Theres a lot to digest. {:>)

TL;DR - Joe boiled down what I'm excited about better. But for what it's worth, I'm truly sorry that your feature wasn't implemented. That gets me too.

Hi Zack,

First, I want to empathize with you. I know firsthand how frustrating it is to see a badly-needed enhancement continually miss each product list. To be clear, I’ve asked and will continue to ask TechSmith for:

- The ability to automatically duck music, just as Audition and Audacity can
- The ability to change the defaults of annotations from their factory-shipped default (color, stroke, etc.) - The ability to assign keyboard shortcuts to my most commonly used annotations (i.e., Shift + N will get you the last used annotation, but I’d love to be able to assign keyboard shortcuts to my two most commonly used sketch motion callouts and have it remember color, stroke, etc.)

I think game-changing elements that would help boost my productivity and make me less likely to leave Camtasia:
- The ability to shuttle playback using J, K and L keys – just as I can in Adobe Premiere/Audition and Reaper.
- The ability to manage audio/vst effects/etc in Camtasia instead of using a third party DAW
- The ability to far better zoom
- I think adding three-point editing (i.e., the ability to set in an out points on your footage and bring in that selection to your timeline) would make assembling a rough cut for advanced users easier. I could also be totally wrong, I’m still exploring how Resolve compares to Premiere.

Second, I also want to share in your specific frustration about captioning in Camtasia. I, too, struggle with captioning in Camtasia, and I’m not sure Audiate – even if I did purchase a subscription – would fix it. I would love a way to control the positioning of captioning on the screen, I would also love a caption editor that allowed me to break up my copy into three lines – 33 to 36 characters per line.

While I’m a fan of TechSmith and Camtasia, I retain an ability to think critically about their progress and momentum. I think they’re in a period of transition as they move from being a mom-and-pop shop making affordable software for people not ready for professional software into a SaaS company. I think there’s pitfalls in their transitioning to the latter. We’ll see how it goes. In the meantime, I think Camtasia is a good product for my sector, Corporate Learning and Development, so I continue to use it.

Third, let me address your question: “what are you excited about?”

- I’m excited about the favoriting/annotation presets as that’s the closest TS has come to giving me what I’ve actually be asking for.

- I know timeline detachment WILL enhance workflow for really complex projects where in

- I think Templates will make uptraining my department on Camtasia easier.

- I think the ripple movement/editing will be a game-changer and brings TSC closer to Premiere in terms of capability.

- I’m super excited to learn more about track mattes – everything I know about video editing, I learned in Camtasia first before I felt confident to try it anywhere else.

- I think magnetic tracks will make editing easier for single-track editors

I get that this must feel like the crappy version of Christmas morning. A tool like Camtasia, as much as I love it, is still just that – a tool. It’s not doing what you need to do, so I’d strongly encourage the following:

- Continue to push TechSmith, because the day they listen is going to be a great day indeed.
- Start looking for a third-party solution – either captioning or a different NLE – that does what you need it to do. This is my approach with audio, as TechSmith just cannot compete with Cockos or Adobe...or Audacity, come to think of it, and I need a DAW in my workflow.

I hope that helps. I hope this didn’t come across as me trying to invalidate your frustration or feedback.

1) Thank you so much! I'm really enjoying this
2) Your "position of playhead"/"total time in project" looks different than my 2020 UI. Is that a 2021 thing or an option I can select?

I'm on 2020.0.5.  I just downloaded a few weeks ago on trial and today paid so I could export local file without watermarks.   I've even tried to export with watermark and the app crashes.   When I reopen, it says "it looks like there is a license key associated with your account". I follow the prompts and still get the "invalid" error.

Thanks Brooks. Looked through all of them. Great tipps and some "hidden gems" there ;)

I deeply miss the possibility to select ALL succeeding media clips if one media is selected. In the current implementation of the "Select succeeding media" function only media on the same track(s) as the selected media clip will be selected... I need this applied to all tracks. There are many workarounds (create a range to the end and lock a track, ripple move + lock a track, zooming out and select all the clips manually) but they're all tedious for such a simple task!

I made a video how (easy) it works in my prefered DAW Studio One:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rLfOiN8ab0

Can I accomplish that in Camtasia in a similarly easy way? Maybe you know of some hidden things which lead to the result I want...!? :)

Best, Lukas

Hey Lukas, glad you enjoyed the videos. I will continue to putter away at them as I stare down the barrel of social isolation.

I totally hear you on the "select all succeeding media before / after" functionality. Premiere has a track select forward and a track select backwards tool that I really like from a past life. I can't make any promises, but we have been talking about how we could improve magnetism by auto pinning content above a magnetic track a la Final Cut or Adobe Rush. I've demoed the Final Cut track select forward / track select bacward in Premiere several times to UX and several engineers. So, it's at least on our minds. I'll make a note of your passionate lobby for it. ;-)

As with most things in life, there is so much we could improve on, but a finite amount of time. The wishlist is long! I will do my best to advocate on your behalf.

Correct ,
I never used the custom button before. I've been playing around with it.
It looks like it remembers the last custom sized window you framed and recorded.

When you fire up the recorder. You could hit the Full screen button and get that. Or the custom button.
Saving you trouble of opening the dropdown. I can see where it would come in handy.

At the same time, I suspect the "Now" larger 2020 toolbar was looked at. So that got axed.
I'm just glad I never used it. {:>)

I was frustrated in a major way when upgrading from 2018 to 2019 (or whatever): the new installation did not bring with it all the library assets I'd made.
When upgrading to 2020, do I still have to remember to export all my Library Assets from the previous version and manually install them into the upgrade, or has TechSmith found a way to port them over?

if I remember correctly, when you run the 2020 installer, if you open the "options", UI there is a setting that will let you import the 2019 Library assets

when I installed 2020, it grabbed all my 2019 Library assets

no need to export/import the assets

Hi Kayakman,
Your memory a little skewed - in the tiny "Options" flower that Camtasia puts early on in the installation, you are offered an option to install Camtasia's default Assets. Once you've done that, if you happen to immediately import your own old assets you'll get two copies of all of Camtasia's assets along with yours.
So, if you have your own assets but exported the entire Library, it is essential to stand on your head and unclick the "install default Assets" button prior to installing.

Does anybody else go through this, or am I the only one making life hard for himself?

I'm not sure what your workflow was when updating?

2018 was still installed when I installed 2019.
I installed 2019 using the default installer.I didn't tick or uncheck any boxes along the way.
When I fired up 2019 all my library assets from 2018 were there. Special folders/Library's
etc.
2020 came along , rinse and repeat. No problems.

Ah, if I go into the Library field on top I find "Older Assets," where my imported assets now reside. So I have all the 2020 Library Assets on top, and precisely the same assets in my "Older Assets" folder underneath.
When I installed Camasia 2019, I ended up going into c:\Program Data\Camtasia Studio... etc and cleaning out my duplicated assets.
I had opened a Support ticket about this, and the Support teamed wagged a finger at me about what I'd done, which is much easier than the "choose-delete-confirm" that I'd have to do inside the program itself.
So yes, I have duplicated assets, and they'd be triplicated if I'd left the 2018 assets in there as well.
Try going to "All Assets" and seeing how many duplicates you have.

To be fair, I don't store much in the Library.

Heres 2020's menu

The user library...... Camtasia 2020. Was created by me.I mentioning it because I saw it and thought it may look confusing.

I just found this support article.
https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us/articles/360042500851-Reuse-Assets-Across-Projects-Asset-Libr...

If you scroll to the bottom it reads..........

If you have Camtasia 2019 installed, your user Libraries are automatically imported into Camtasia 2020 during installation. To import Libraries from previous versions, complete the steps below.

I took a closer look. There are some assets in Camtasia 2018 that stayed behind when updating. So I was mistaken about that.
I don't appreciate that we cannot relocate the library folder. And you can no longer link content to the Library. Creating duplicate assets as a result.
So I don't use the library as much these days. Link to library was removed in 2018.

My bad - I just went into C:\ProgramData\TechSmith and discovered that I had created "All Assets" and "Older Assets" as my own User Libraries.
Indeed, as you say Camtasia did import my User Library from 2019.

So, if Camtasia 2020 now contains Music, Lower Thirds, Icons, etc that were not in 2019, how do I know? And I didn't know from 2018-2019, so I copied the 2018 assets into a "Default" folder for 2019. And then I got the "Bonus" packages and integrated them into the 2019 Library which has now disappeared because 2020 is here --- it would be nice to have something more User Friendly, or at least an instruction book on how to use and integrate the bonuses (i.e., I have to learn how TechSmith thinks in order to use their product).
All in all, the Library feature and how it works has not changed significantly (or at all) from the previous version, and I'm left with searching for some Intro music whose name I can't remember - is it in Camtasia 2020, or Bonus-Music, or ....

sorry re the miss-memory involving install options

you are probably getting dups and trips of many assets because you had manually exported assets from previous versions after the install of a new version; the manual imports added to what was automatically brought over during an install

I'll mention that one major improvement in Library is the ability on 2020 to selectively export assets using the new "export package" function; it is quick and easy to now export all assets at same time, then later selectively import which ones you want [via minor workaround]; and, the packaged items carry their Library folder names

Kayakman, as always you are absolutely correct. I was told by TechSmith Support to export my Library from Camtasia 9 and import it into 2018, and from thence I have duplicates (actually now with 2020 I have 8 iterations of the same file in some places).
So to reduce the duplication (sexylication? octolication?) I went to uninstall Camtasia 2019 and arrived at the message:

"All my user data..." does that mean that Camtasia 2020 has imported all my assets, or that it's merely pointing to the 2019 folder and that if I uninstall 2019 I'll delete the User Library that I've taken 4 years to create?
It makes me hesitate to uninstall 2019 on my nice new laptop with limited SDD space on it.

With my upgrade from Camtasia 9 to 2018 I found I had none of my User assets.  Tech Support told me to re-install the old program, export the Library to zip, re-uninstall 9 and then import the zip to 2018 - which of course introduced the asset duplication. Because there was no notification of changes I did the same when I upgraded from 2018-2019. And I was about to do the same now....
When we have laptop (or wristwatch) computers with petabyte storage it won't matter, but right now I'm looking to save a megabyte here and a kilobyte there.
So kilobyte me!

Okay, answered my own question - 2020 copies the "Library 4.0\User Libraries" folder from Camtasia Studio 19 to Camtasia Studio 20 inside the ProgramData folder.
So it's okay to perform the "Delete Files" option when uninstallingd 2019.
What a headache!

Folks, read the "supplemental documentation" from Brooks' original post above:

My favorite part so far is the long discussion of Track Mattes including

  • TheBrooksDoctrine

My least favorite item: Dropped support for OSX10.12. Bummer but understandable.

Looks like a long awaited, quite substantial upgrade. Looking forward to seeing lots of user comments.

Dear Brooks,
After such a long time of complaints and whining (I'm talking about me), I must give credit where it's due.
Compared with all previous versions, 2020 has markedly improved in terms of exporting (zip) and sharing (render to mp4). I'm really enjoying looking at the "progress bar" race along and finish before I even have time to open Freecell!
I've seen the remarks about annotation boxes (I'm having my own teething problems about this) and I've marveled at your quick videos on new widgets and how-tos.
You deserve a vote of thanks. In addition, I'd like to compliment you on your recent response to someone, where you sound very sincere about listening to our suggestions and incorporating them.
I'm happy to be on the team with you!

I'm finding 2020 to be INCREDIBLY slow and unusable. I upgraded today to record a new video. It has become completely unresponsive 4 times today alone, where I had to ALT + TAB+ DELETE to shut it down. The spacebar doesn't play the video unless I click the play button, and then it will work (older versions didn't work like this, and I got very used to it). There's no way for me to export it to an older version so that I can go back to the version that worked correctly. New features aren't worth it if the basic system doesn't perform as well as previous versions. (Note: Support is of no help, even though I paid for the service plan and was supposed to get priority treatment.)

I just rebooted today, using all the settings Tech Support suggested, and version 2020 has already frozen once for a few seconds then later became completely unresponsive (wouldn't even automatically shut down), losing a few minutes of work.

Could you explain to me how to import my project into 2019? I've tried everything under the sun, and nothing seems to work. I can't simply import the video file, as I've already made significant edits to the video and audio (cut the audio from one long piece to heaps of smaller pieces to eliminate audio mess ups).

I also just checked and the annotations are now gone in my Camtasia 2019. What the heck!

Sounds like you may need tech support to straighten this out.
Or a graphics card update.

Another thought, Camtasia 2020 has the capability of deleting stock assets. There may a glitch that deleted yours ?
In 2020, try right clicking an open area of an annotations panel.See if you can restore any or all default annotations.

I realize this doesn't explain version 2019.
I've encountered instances where 2020 thought it was 2019. So theres a possibility having the 2 versions installed can create conflict.

Please contact tech support (https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us) and they should hopefully be able to help with this. These are stored in your appdata folder (C:\Users\[you]\AppData\Local\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\20.0\Features\Tools) but there may be something going wrong with that path that's stopping Camtasia from finding them.

Just tried (trial) of 2020, look nice easy to work with but...
Reading the forum, seems like for years people have asked for "Mouse Movements" to have ability to re-record or edit the movement after recording.  Not smoothing.
Will this ever come to Camtasia ?

They did the best they can to ignore this feature wish for 6 or 7 years.

Congrats for the release, I'm pretty excited about it. I waited to upgrade from ver. 9 to see the addition of more features and a general improvement of performances. While I'm eager to upgrade, I'm still a bit disappointed that we still have no Color Grading or LUTs import options to simulate cinematic looks or Instagram-like filters. This is something that has been available on a lot of video software (Sony Vegas, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Hitfilm Express, etc. even OBS studio can import LUTs) and would love to have it on Camtasia since I just love the workflow of this editor. Maybe in 2021?

Filippo, we are doing some early research and prototyping regarding 3D LUT support (CUBE format). If you are interested in sharing how you would use LUTs and demonstrating some of your current workflows we would love to talk. Please reach out directly to me: b[dot]andrus[at]techsmith[dot]com. Thanks.
