Camtasia 3 Mac can't open file error

Yesterday I opened a Version 2 file in Version 3. Today when I tried to open it, Camtasia said it couldn't open it. No other context. Chatted with support - they told me Camtasia only logs errors if it crashes. Support also didn't have any checks I could make myself to try to diagnose. Only option was to send them the file to debug!

Anyway, I decided to dig a little and found the following which might be of help to others experiencing the same error.

I created a new Version 3 file and imported some random media. Save and exit.
In the finder, I right-clicked on both the 'broken' file and the new file and selected "Show Package Contents" so I could compare them side-by-side.

Transpires that in the 'broken' file, there were 2 additional files: "project.xml.bak" and "~project.xml.bak". I moved them out (to the Desktop) and tried opening again - worked.

Thank you, Tony. I had that issue with one of my v2 files, too. Had no idea what to do. I'll give that a try.

That worked for some of the files but I just ran into one that wouldn't open in v3 no matter what I did.

Wow, that's interesting. Those files (the .bak files) are backups of the project we use to fall back on when something goes awry with the real project file. I can't say why deleting them would fix it, but I do hope you can send a busted project to TechSupport so we can take a look at it!

I had a problem today with a file "The document my-video-file.cmproj could not be opened". Freaked out, couldn't fix it. But found a hack. Saved the day for me and I thought I'd share incase it helps someone else.

I'm using Camtasia 3 Mac. I duplicated the file. Renamed it from my-video-file.cmproj to: my-video-file.zip . It'll ask you if you want to rename it. Say yes. The mac read the file now as a folder (weird). I found a file in there called 'project.tscproj.bak' which I think is you backup. I renamed it project.tscproj (without the .bak). This file can be opened by Camtasia. Hooray.

Note that it's a little easier to just right-click on the .cmproj file and choose "Show package contents" instead of renaming it to "*.zip", as tony above mentioned.
