Camtasia 8.5: project was created in an earlier version

Basically, I have Camtasia 8.5 from may 12th 2015. For a school project, I have been using Camtasia and it has worked perfectly fine for ages now. However, today I got an error message saying "This project was created in an earlier version of Camtasia Studio." which is bullshit, as I have not used any previous versions nor updated the version I have. https://gyazo.com/949ccba2249891bdc9ed6ba2d7b378f5 I just thought of it as some normal error message, so I pressed yes and got ready to edit. That's when just a small little box appeared and none of my clips showed up. All of it was gone. I went to my files and saw that this file became a file with just 5 kb in size which shocked me. The backup has 374 which I believe my original file was, but whenever I try to open that the same thing happens. Can someone please help me? I need this to work ASAP as I need to turn this in soon.

If you open the original project file in Note Pad.

Is the project data version "8.00">

perhaps uninstall Camtasia Studio 8.5, then download and install Camtasia Studio 8.6; I believe that was the last version 8 update; be sure you have the version 8 key

Download Older Versions

your project's media files should still be available, as Camtasia does not modify them in any way

you should be able to load the media files and redo the editing

You can't recover data that doesn't exist, so yeah. I would say the project is lost.
At least, I don't envision a recovery method.

I was merely suggesting that a re-install "May Help" with this error down the road.

However, we don't know what trashed the file to begin with.
It may have been corrupted since the day you last saved it long ago.

Okay, I have made up my mind. Since nothing works, I'm just going to start over again. It's going to be a lot of work in a short amount of time, but I'm going to do it. Thank you all for trying to help me though, it means a lot! If anyone else got this problem as well, I suggest starting over again. I guess there's really no fix to the error. Have a good day, everyone!

this issue has been brought up, on this forum, at least once before [if my memory serves me correctly]

as I recall, it was related to a system or Camtasia crash?  the blank project file is actually not empty; it is populated with nothing but null characters; lots of them

my guess is that the corruption is somehow caused by a glitch in the Windows file system actions ??

suggestion ... as a best practice going forward ... every so often, export your project as zip; that will preserve the project file, and all associated media files, in on place; each time you make a zip, use a serialized file name so as not to write over earlier, good copies

start your next editing session by importing the most recent zip

just something to consider ...
