Camtasia 9 and Camtasia 2018 Files Incompatible

I am working on a project with a friend and she just got the new Camtasia 2018. Turns out that 2018 upconverts all older projects and meanwhile, despite being only 1 version behind, I am unable to view anything from the 2018 version.

Needless to say, that's kinda lame.

This has always been true; the next generation always upgrades the files in a one-way direction.  Perhaps she can render previews to allow you to provide feedback until you get back in sync.

I have another colleague who uses Camtasia 7 and while some features are lost/broken when I send him projects, he can still open them. If he sends me projects, 9 generally has no issues with it.

I could at least create projects in a simplistic way and we could decide on who would produce videos depending on our limited resources/budget. This time, it's just a deadend and are forced to spend money if not be inconvenienced with piggy backing each other.

I suppose if this is how it is, then that's life.

Whenever possible, it's best to stay on the same version when collaborating on a project.  This ensures that the files being exchanged are compatible.

Here's another option for collaborating on a project...

You can have both 9.x and 2018.x installed at the same time.  With major version updates, we do the work to ensure that these versions can run side-by-side.  Further, if you have a license key for 2018, it will unlock prior versions, including 9.x.

So your colleague that has purchased 2018 could install the same version of Camtasia 9.x that you are running.  Prior versions of Camtasia can be downloaded from here.  Use the 2018 key to unlock version 9.x.  This should allow you to collaborate on a project using the same version of Camtasia.

Hope this helps.

That is true. I was just feeling leery about sharing my own license key with someone.

Thanks for the help from everyone

just to clarify ...

per the post above, you have 9, your associate has 2018

your associate can download 9 and unlock it using her 2018 key; no need to share your 9 key with her

but you would need to purchase an upgrade to 2018

or ... just do the conversions per the above tutorials

In my current 2018 Camtasia Testversion 2018.0.7 , the
"version" : "2.0" can be changed in "version" : "0.5"

But the second row "version" : "18.0" is now shown and so it can not be changed to "version" : "9.0".

--- assetproj file starts...

{
  "width" : 1920.0,
  "height" : 1080.0,
  "ident" : "",
  "version" : "0.5",
  "editRate" : 30,
  "sourceBin" : [
      {

Does the video depend on a different 2018 build number which is the reason for this missing row?

After changing only one row, the project can't be opened in Camtasia 9. and adding the missing rows also does not make a difference

... adding
"authoringClientName" : {
  "name" : "Camtasia",
  "platform" : "Windows",
  "version" : "9.0"
  }

Is there a know workflow in case the second row is missing?

I guess I should state the obvious here, which is that we appreciate the hardcore work of folks like kayakman to help you do this, but I still wouldn't recommend it. I fear you might end up with a corrupt project. Save often and don't be surprised if things go awry?
