Camtasia Mac 2019 crashing

  • Problem
  • Updated 1 week ago
Tried every type of fix suggested by support, Camtasia 2019 constantly crashes on my mac (16gb ram / latest Mohave OS)

Losing so many edits (even after saving constantly, the autosave doesn't always catch the crash and restore).

We use this every day for our business and it's impacting productivity REALLY badly, looks like we will switch to another editing solution if this isn't fixed.

Camtasia 2019 is UNUSABLE right now on mac...

I assume your support case is still open and you're still working with them, then? Constant crashes are not normal or expected behavior, so our support team should continue working with you on that.

I just installed the latest Camtasia Mac release. It now freezes when saving a recording or pressing the "New Project" button. Any ideas? Can I downgrade to the prior version?

Thanks,
Larry

Definitely contact support so we can figure out what's going on with your specific system. Freezes aren't normal/common so some investigation is needed.

I am also crashing with mac and Camtasia 2019 - only when I do Screen Recording. Other functions are working fine.  It's very frustrating.

I face the same problem with Catalina 10.15.4, where camtasia keeps crashing or freezing!!!! It's affecting deeply my ability to work (specially now where everything is remote only) and I am now using an very old Windows PC in order to do some (I can't do all as it is not as powerful from a processing and ram perspective) of my daily work!!!! You should definetely propose some solution to your Mac community!!!

It would help if you could contact our support department so that
  1. we can help you get it working
  2. we can get better diagnostics to see *why* it is crashing for you, to find a fix
In some cases where regular crashes happen like this, it is because of something else weird on the system. In other cases, we can find a problem with our software and fix it. Most people aren't getting these problems, so they are hard to diagnose without help from people like you.

Hi. I'm having the same issue. I have Catalina 10.15.5 and Camtasia is crashing all the time. I do have a video and I can't share it because of the crashing. Can you help?

I have the same issue with Camtasia 2019 on Mac. My video length is 20mins and it just now started to give me the spinning wheel of death for every.single.basic.edit. Even just moving a clip on the timeline it freezes on the spinning wheel. I only have 2 mins of editing left and so far I'm in hour 3 of editing because it keeps freezing!!!

That's not good... or normal. If you'd be willing to contact support we might be able to figure out what's going on there?

Hello jace, Helge-
It's really hard to figure out what's causing a crash through the forums, but if our support staff can ask questions, get diagnostics and crash files from you, then we can likely solve the issue and also learn more about any fixes we might need in the product:

Same here.  It is worse since the last update.  As soon as it starts to give spinlocks I close the app and reopen it to continue working.  Something is definitely wrong!

TEN (10) times I have had to force quit Camtasia today on a mac today b/c of the spinning wheel. Yesterday the same. SO unproductive and frustrating. @techsmith why can you still not get a stable mac version of Camtasia out. I'll take stability over new features any day in your next release.

11 months later, that’s rough. Have you contacted Tech Support? Have they been able to analyze crash dump files and your project to determine possible reasons for this instability?

Been through this multiple times, plist deletions etc, it always comes back whatever we've done. 2020 seems so much worse than 2019. My faith in Camtasia has never been so low. Thing is so many others are reporting it too which points to a software issue, not an individual issue. Camtasia seems to be an afterthought on Mac, although Mac users pay the same as windows with far less issues on Windows...

Oh and btw there are never any crash reports generated, I have to force quit as Camtasia physically hangs forever.

Simon,

Really appreciate your patience in answering all these questions. I assume your tickets have been escalated as far as they would go?

Because if you've spent 11 months with V.2019 and V.2020, which both yielded unacceptable performance and support tickets, and they haven't resolved your issue.

If it were me, I would talk to support about next steps, up to and including a refund so you can pursue a more stable screen recording/editing solution.

And I don't recommend moving from the Camtasia brand lightly, but if you've been at a resolution for this long and this product doesn't play nicely with your machine, I'm not sure what options remain for you.

I understand the forums don't represent the entire customer base, but it does seem like TSC for Mac would be the easier platform for which to develop TSC iterations, given how (comparatively) fewer model lines are in circulation.

The problem has only gotten worse. After updating my Mac and updating Camtasia, I now either get the wheel of death or my laptop completely shuts down. It has happend when I've saved, imported media or tried to open saved files.

I'm curious... I just installed Canon EOS Webcam utility that just came out... any chance you installed this too? Only thing I can think of that I've changed.

Nope. Not for me. If it helps at all, I find that Camtasia is more likely to crash if I group my video elements and if I try trimming a clip.

It's very frustrating because I have been working with Camtasia on and of for maybe 10 years. I really don't want to learn to use other software, such a hassle!

Today Camtasia completely crashed and rebooted my Mac. I've never had that happen with any other software before. All I did was drag a .mov file into the Media Bin. I'm using v20190.9 (109647) and MacOS Catalina 10.15.5. I think it's time to move away from Camtasia.

Yes, this has happened to me three times in the past 24 hours.  Unfortunately, removing the .plist file mentioned above did not work.  I had thought of upgrading to Camtasia 2020, but given how terrible the stability on Camtasia is right now, I am thinking of abandoning it for Final Cut.

My computer has just crashed two more times while editing- that's a hard crash with black screen and reboot.  In every case, as far as I can tell, it will crash when trimming a clip.  However, I seem to have better luck splitting and then deleting the unwanted material.  Can anyone else confirm if this is happening to you as well?  Perhaps the trim function is the culprit or indicative of some sort of GPU issue?

I have two days experiencing the same crashing. I don't know how I did finish a 5 minutes video. It took me hours because of the crashing. Every time restarts my macbook. It's really frustrating.

Historically, full system crashes that severe indicate a bigger problem like a bad video driver. Have you made sure your system is up to date?

I have a macbook pro 2018 16g with Catalina last update. I work with Finalcut, Filmora9 an other Adobe softwares. Never had any problem. Just with Camtasia. So system is not the problem here.

Generally, operating systems try to prevent user software from causing trouble. If you were to intentionally write software that tried to crash your computer, you'd find that you were unable to do so. However, if you write a device driver with that malicious intent, it'd be easy!
It's possible that Camtasia has a bug so bad it causes your whole system to crash. But, it's more likely that the particular technologies we use (vs those other apps you listed) is different, and pokes something they don't. So, I'm trying to help you find out the root cause.

Usually it's a device driver. But, it could be something else, or something that other software has as a bug that we could work around...
I think in this case you're best off working with our support staff; maybe we can get the system crash log and sniff out what it's related to?

Same here. I am running a 2017 macbook pro with 16gb of ram and the latest version of Catalina.  I can do the same work on Divinci Resolve without issue.  It only appears to be Camtasia that is bombing out on me. If it weren't for the learning curve with other software, I would have switched already.

Whats a good alternative to Camtasia?  Just got it and its crashing already.  Switching to another program that works would be great

Davinci Resolve is an excellent free alternative.  The tools are fantastic, but there is a bit of a learning curve.  If you are willing to go through a few YT tutorials, you should be able to cope.  It appears to be considerably more stable than Camtasia as well.

Sadly, because Techsmith appears unwilling or unable to resolve the problem, we will have to Davinci Resolve ;-).  If you are willing to spend $$ on an alternative, Final Cut Pro is brilliant, easy to use, and rock solid.  It's a real pity, because I have upgraded my Camtasia installation every year for the last three, but this is no longer viable with system crashes now a daily occurrence.

I went for Final Cut Pro and an education bundle from Ripple Training. Learning a lot and taking my editing skills to the next level.
