In Camtasia studio There is huge empty row above all the tracks. It wastes valuable space on my monitor. What is this wasted track-like space and how do I minimize it?

Try using the horizontal line just below the play triangle under the video. When you mouse over you can move it up or down. You can also balance things  by mousing over the top of the Track 1 text, just below the + sign.

Well that's embarrassing. I always thought of dragging that line as the way to resize the playback window, but I now see is also minimizes the space I pointed to in my picture. But I, AFAICT, I cannot eliminate that phantom track next to the Plus button underneath that weird dotted line. What is the purpose of this phantom track?

Hello,
You are correct, that area is part of the user interface and cannot be removed.

That section of the timeline is for quickly creating new tracks.
* Click the plus symbol to add a track.
-or-
* Drag a media clip to the timeline and drop on that area to automatically add the clip to a new track.

If you do not want to see that area, you can use the vertical scroll bar on the right side of the timeline to scroll past it so it will not be in view.

Thanks for using Camtasia Studio.
