Camtasia for iPad

Camtasia needs to be developed for Tablets too. For example I write on iPad Apps but there is now way I can record and then publish a video on Youtube. iPad like Tablets have good enough resolution for making screen recording and should not be a porblem.

As of now I use my handycam to produce a video in dark room and then undergo cumbersome processing and then upload.

If you can make an app for iPad....I would love to grab it. Also as of now there is no app to record on iPad so you have a good chance looking at the work TechSmith have done till now.

Great suggestion. I just got an iPad for the holidays. Amazing device.

Just curious, what are you trying to show/do on the iPad? Something generic (like how to change settings) or something specific to one app?

What's your goal in making a screencast from it?

Any other background info on what you're trying to accomplish will help inform the discussion internally at TechSmith.

The mobile app market is massive at the moment and you just need to scan demos on You Tube to see just how needed this would be!! So many shaky cameras showing new apps.

Hi there, Im currently making training videos for a university using Camtasia. It would be great to be able to record the screen for certain action - ie "How to setup your email". So far I have been taking screen captures on the ipad (press the home button and the power button at the same time) and then making the video of the screengrab. I have been able to make the Ipad screen come up on my computer also using VNC (this requires some setup) but its very slow and does not make the video look very nice.

I basically write on iPad Apps and tell them how to use it. That could be game or a To do note app.

Also from a App developer point of view I cannot create a demo of my product to explain people how my app work without a Handycam.

If there is camtasia for iPad, I can create a video and upload directly to youtube or any other video services.

Great point. Amen. I cannot believe that either Techsmith or the Screenflow people have not come up with a tool like this. It is such a huge opportunity for these companies.

I too have been doing screen captures in order to show some of my clients how to do certain things on my Ipad/Iphone. This is the whole reason for Camtasia for the PC/laptop.... to show others what I am doing on my screen.

I totally agree with your idea Ashish. I just got my entire sales team set up on iPads and would like to be able to create video tutorials for them to speed up deployment. They are located across the country so if i could make standard videos it would save my team a lot of individual phone calls.
Love the software and would like to use it on my iPad.

Yes, mostly for "how-to" sequences. That could be "how-to" get to certain features of apps...or "how-to" get to certain functions on the iPad/iPhone OS. Also INSIDE some of the apps, "how to" develop and generate documents, paintings, drawings, sketches, vector graphics...especially helpful for the more complicated programs.

For smart phones too how many app developers could demo their products properly on You Tube!

Love the idea!!

Every math teacher in the country would buy an iPad and this app if you'd make it. Using a tablet pc and camtasia is almost standard these days when making lectures to post online. We'd love to be able to use the iPad to do this.

I own a website that reviews iPad apps.

Right now I have to set up an external camcorder to make video reviews... it would be so great if I could record them right on the iPad, like I do when capturing video on my PC with my Camtasia Suite! Now that would be SWEET!

Right now one can do this if the iPad is jailbroken, but I don't think I should have to compromise my iPad to get the job done.

Call out loud and clear when you have an iPad app that will do this for us! I will be the 1st one in line!

Does any of this work with the iPad simulator in Apple's development tools? That obviously isn't the same but it is one way to screen capture activity.

The iPad 2 has an optional HDMI output adaptor, i believe that's how Apple creates their screen captures for iPad.

How does that work? (I'm old and a busy mother of 4 who works full time, so I never have time to really investigate things for myself anymore) Do you hook up the iPad 2 to a computer with camtasia to do a screen capture? What I'm really hoping for (before I buy the 2nd ipad) is to find out if it can make screen captures movies with audio independent from another computer. I would drop the ipad in a heartbeat for any other tablet that would allow me to do that. Thanks for the reply.

Beth, there is not currently a consumer solution that I am aware of that works like Snagit or Jing- with or without a connected computer. I'm afraid that everyone will need to be patient.

Thanks David.
How is it that jailbroken iPads can apparently do video capture? They do it, I believe, even on the original iPad. I am not willing to jailbreak my iPad but would love the capability!

One limitation of iOS is that only one program can be running at a time, unlike a desktop computer. Jailbreaking allows a user to do things that Apple doesn't allow in the stock software.

I'm not a developer but my understanding is that has been the problem keeping any screen capture programs off the devices.

Not sure that is the case any longer with the newer iOS releases. Multi-tasking on iPad and iPhone is now standard and works well based on my experience.

Yes I did wrote a review on note taking apps recently and I see many recording in background easily. So it should be possible.

Hmmm, but if great note taking iPad apps, like NotesPlus can continue to record audio while the user multi-tasks I would think that video screen capture should be doable too... at least I hope so!

I am following this thread with interest. I own an iPad and use it a fair bit for presentations with Keynote. I would love to bring the screen capture functionality for little teaching stints with a simple program like penultimate. The goal is to creat learning videos similar to those found & khanacademy.org, but all from the iPad. Am I dreaming?

I am interested in this feature, too. I teach economics, and I currently use Camtasia Studio with my tablet PC. I would like to be able to carry the ipad or galaxy tab or similar device around the room while I am lecturing so that I can make annotations (draw graphs, solve problems) without being tethered to the front podium. I would like to be able to capture my presentation using Camtasia Studio.

When I am speaking or training on iPad use and how to gain productivity in the sales arena, I would like to be able to "play" the Camtasia video of my screen activities to the audience. Whether live, webinar or within my blog, I provide good value to my audiences when able to show them the actual screen and what is happening during a sequence of events as I do from the PC for pc-based web tools.

As of now, I have to take screen shots of each step and incorporate each one into a PowerPoint slide. Not as effective or "sticky" as the actual video capture.

I do not even need to have it play back on the iPad as when speaking to a large audience or over the web, I present from my PC anyway.

Hope to hear your plans and any recommendations for us all.

There was some discussion about this recently in the Camtasia Users Group on LinkedIn. http://lnkd.in/mTUxfS

I thought it was worth sharing with y'all that outside of a couple of jailbreak solutions that were kindly offered, there were also a couple of workable alternate solutions including an external capture using an IPEVO document camera, as well as another creative use of VNC software.

In the latter, what the contributor showed was his use of VNC to remotely access his iPhone from his desktop. (By extension, it could conceivably work for iPad, too.) Then, he used Camtasia to capture the screencast from the remote login on his desktop.

For the cool Engineers at Techsmith, maybe one approach to consider is instead of creating a brand new product that runs on an iPad (or other tablet), that perhaps you create an add-on module to the existing Camtasia suite, along with a VNC type service (via a partnership?) that allows users to remotely view and manipulate their mobile device using the (yet to be developed) Camtasia add-on?

Just thinking outloud. Other thoughts?

If you're timid about jailbreaking your iPad, you might try a screengrabber from Epiphan. This device allows you to connect your iPad via a VGA dongle to your PC or Mac for screencapture. I'm about to try out the low-low end product in their lineup called the VGA2USB. ($299). The one I really wanted (higher frame rate) is too expensive for me ($799). You can see a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJcoJH...

Thanks for the suggestion, Rob. We have been looking at a hardware solution using mirroring and a capture device on a desktop computer to screen record from the iPad. We'll keep you posted if we come up with a good solution.

(Fraser's post was merged into a Snagit for iPad thread, but really belongs here. See below):

there are about 2000 people a month searching for iPhone screen recorder. The only app available to do this is a Cydia jail breaking app.

There is definitely potential for such an application. I am posting this because I wanted to record and show people how to blog from an iPhone using the iBlogger app.

As a web design and development company, we are constantly having to set up new email addresses for clients and it would save me money if i could video email set up on the iPhone

I also use the Keynote iPad to "pitch" and present to people. I have created some great templates. Again show people how to create and present on the iPad.

My kids have the iTouch and they are constantly googling how to get through different levels on games they play. You just need to go onto Youtube and search for how to videos on nintendo games etc

If anyone can develop this app, Techsmith can :)

I don't want Snagit for the iPad or iPhone, I can just hit the menu button & power button to capture the screen.

No, I want screen recording capabilities like Camtasia. Wondering why my post got moved into this thread.

If they can make an app like SyncPad that allows you to use your iPad as a whiteboard and have anyone at all watch it in real time in a browser surely they can project that same whiteboard with technology onto a PC for screen video capture.

The only way ppl are accomplishing it right now is by mirroring the iPad onto the PC and the part to do that costs $799! That's crazy... and there has to be an easier way.
