Hey guys,

Currently, Camtasia for Mac is running into issues with recording for those who have updated to OSX 10.9. As that was a free update, we expect many of you will be updating. We are working on a fix as we speak, and will be posting here when we have something for you all! As it stands, if you need to record with Camtasia for Mac today, hold off on updating to Mavericks until we get a patch released. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Update: 10/24/13 We are currently testing a fix for this.

Update: 10/30/13 Version 2.5.1 is now live, and will fix this issue. You can find it here: http://www.techsmith.com/download/licenses/camtasiamac.asp?ver=2 or click the Camtasia 2 menu, then Check for Updates. Thanks for your patience!

Hi all! Anyone else having trouble with the new OS X Mavericks?.

It seems like Camtasia can no longer capture applications like Maps or even Excel. When I open an application, the grab file just shows my mouse navigating a blank screen .

I experience problems when recording video and sound in full screen mode (1920x1200). I have tried several times today. The sound is recorded but video freezes after 15-40 seconds and throughout a total recording time of around 40 minutes the video (image) is just updated one or two times. I have just tried to record in area mode (1920x1080) and here it works perfect.

The title on top should say 10.9, not 1.9.0

So wait... Marvericks betas have been available to developers for months, and you guys are only doing this now? I expect much better from $100 software.
I mean, you don't even have the version number right. It's 10.9, not 1.9.

Is TechSmith a professional operation or isn't it?

We've just released version 2.5.1 with fixes for the OSX 10.9 issues we are aware of.  Please use the Check for Updates... function in the product to get the update.

I selected, "Check for Updates..." from the menu and nothing happened. This happened on the last version. Actually, 5 minutes later a dialog appeared and shows I have an update! Either I have a slow connection or something else is going on. Can you show the dialog to let people know you are checking for updates so we know its doing something? Also, thanks again for a great product.

I don't even get an update option on the Camtasia Menu so am reinstalling from the website.  As for TechSmith I have been using their software for years and am very pleased with their feedback and response to problems.

If you got your app from Apple App Store then there is no update option.. you need to log in to the apple store so you can get the new update.

With Mavericks (10.9) I was able to record Full Screen with Camtasia 2.5 for about 10 minutes before the recording crashed. Fortunately Camtasia saved the file, intact. I restarted the recorder and continued to record for another 10 minutes until it crashed again. Again, Camtasia was able to save the clip. Rinse, repeat. Fortunately, I had a separate video recorder running to capture continuous audio. The recording was done on a high-spec MacBookPro (SSD, 16 GB RAM, etc.)

If you have any pre-release updates that need field testing, please post info on how to get on board with that testing effort.

Has anyone had success recording with Camtasia on 10.9? This is the first time I've opened it up since downloading the update & I'm not able to record from a custom area at all. It records the first screen and all my mouse movements, but the screens I'm trying to record either don't change or get weird glitch effects in which parts of the screen update but other parts don't.

Chris,
I'm experiencing the exact same issue. I'm going to use a different computer or Jing in the mean time. Hoping Jing doesn't have the same issue since it is also a TechSmith product.

Thanks, Logan for letting everyone know. I understand how frustrating it can be to work with technology and updates. :)

FWIW, as soon as I updated to Camtasia 2.5 (didn't realize I was on an older version), I get the same thing that others have described above -- black screen with mouse movements but no video.

Thanks for the report.  We're aware of problems with CMac 2.5 where secondary screens are not recorded correctly.  We have a fix that's being tested now.  We will release a version that fixes this issue as soon as it completes our testing process.  Sorry for the trouble.

Secondary screens? Implying that primary displays should work? If there's a workaround I can use for now, I'm all over it.

Here's a workaround: Use SnagIt to record, then edit in Camtasia. Even if you don't purchase SnagIt, you can get a full working version for 30 days. Hope that helps!

Thanks Amy, great suggestion.  There are some frustrations with SnagIt (doesn't remember custom area, or audio input), but these are a lot less of an issue than the recorder crashing ever 2 minutes. Looking forward to a proper fix though.

I downgraded to Camtasia 2.4.2 to avoid the black-screen problem as mentioned elsewhere; thought it might be worth mentioning that 2.4.2 also seems to record OK from Mavericks, although the recording area selector doesn't work properly when trying to record from a second screen.

UPDATE.
well that didn't quite go as planned... i just finished a recording...and when I was watching it back I realized it wasn't recording everything...... it records the original screen and my mouse, but doesn't show the other images and actions I bring into the screen.... Ugh.

That's what it was doing for me before I upgraded to 2.5. I've been using Quicktime to record screens until this gets fixed.

I downloaded an earlier version (2.4.2) from their FTP site and tried that. I just noticed the same thing Kim. It all looks good but, when I go to edit the video, none of my mouse actions was captured. i.e. if I click a menu that has a sub-menu, the sub-menu is not captured on in the recording. - Bizarre. After just 6 days into my eval of the software (and really liking it) I'm looking at other options.

As I'm looking at the ScreenFlow app requirements, they specify that support for 10.9 mavericks is "coming soon". I think I'll take Chris's approach above and just stick it out till this gets sorted with Camtasia as I really like it.

I did try something: I AppZapped the app and install it again, I recorded more than 4 hours and so far everything good, I do recommend that you use an external app to recored the sound. also when I use my second screen I get quarter of the picture and the rest is black so I tested the main screen and it worked fine.

Hope it works for you guys :) cheers

Hey guys --

I can confirm what Dave O'Rourke alluded to above -- I can record screens in Camtasia 2.5 on my primary display but not my secondary display. If it makes any difference, I am using a custom area to record a single window (in this case a browser window) rather than the full screen -- but that's just because I haven't tested recording the full screen. I'm happily back to using Camtasia for my screen recording rather than Quicktime (or Jing, or SnagIt or anything else).

The only bummer is not being able to record from my secondary monitor but I'm happy working around that until this bug is fixed.

Both of these bugs (the secondary display issue, and the crash after 2.3 minutes) should now be fixed with version 2.5.1, which was just released.

Yep, I was using a secondary monitor attached to my iMac by a Thunderbolt controller. Works on the main iMac display. :)

Having trouble EDITING as well - selection of region is very tough. Current time head keeps snapping back to head of timeline when dragging elements. Thanks for adding edit function testing to your to-do list. Looking forward to a patch!

I too jumped too quickly on Mavericks and not only Camtasia is almost kaput; Keynote has been doing all kinds of funny stuff and my mouse is not always reacting like it should. It's been a bit hellish since last Friday...

Can we remove Mavericks until everyone finds ways to fix the bugs and Apple spends a bit more time on making sure that it works on MacBook Pro Retina?

Problems in Camtasia 2.4.0 (cannot use latest 2.5 on Retina' secondary monitor - so switched back to 2.4):
- image freezes and does not follow screen which mixes up 2 images together - not pretty
- won't allow me to use PinPoint as it totally freezes the screen when recording

Can we remove Mavericks until everyone finds ways to fix the bugs and Apple spends a bit more time on making sure that it works on MacBook Pro Retina?

I'll do what chris has suggested - try recording from my Retina display instead of secondary monitor.

I have the app store version and don't see the update option in my Camtasia menu since I think all app store updates have to got through the app store and downloading an update outside of the app store may affect your license.

Others who purchased from the app store may see the same lack of update option and may need to wait for the app store version to appear?
