Camtasia Studio 8 - Settings for multiple users

Hi

We are going to deploy Camtasia Studio 8 to 50-100 machines. I have figured out how to do the installation silent, but there is a couple of settings I want to set for the user.

When starting Camtasia Studio for the first time, it asks the user to register the product.
Is it possible to disable the "Register Camtasia Online" box?
Is it possible to disable opening "Thank you for purchasing..." website ?

Is it possible to disable auto update? - Our users does not have local administrative rights.
(It seems like this setting is controlled "per user" in the registry, if it could be controlled "per machine" instead, I could easily manipulate the reg key for all our machines.

Regards
Tommy

Hello,
I think you would be better and quicker served getting right over to our Technical Support team:
http://bit.ly/tschelp

You will need to create an account first with our support system if you don't already have one. It's fast, and free.

You can expect someone from Technical Support to get back with you within one day - but maybe two depending on how busy they are right now.

Thanks for using Camtasia Studio!
Kelly

PS: If your team routinely works on shared projects, or , you have intros, outros, surveys, etc that you want each person to use, you may benefit from this PDF guide called Project Collaboration:

Tommy,

Please see the Enterprise Installation documnet at http://techsmith.custhelp.com/ci/fattach/get/106290/0/filename/CS+Enterprise+Install.doc

This is admittdedly outdated (we're working on an update) but the general process for creating a custom installation transform still applies to CS 8.

The property to set for disabling the web is TSC_LAUNCH_TOUR with a value of 0.

The registration dialog and purchase thanks link can be bypassed by adding the registry entry RunCount (type REG_DWORD ) with a value of 1 under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\8.0\Camtasia Studio\8.0 key in your installation transform. This will also bypass the loading of the example project on first run.

To disable checking for updates, set the CheckForUpdateEnable (type REG_DWORD) entry with a value of 0 under the same key as above.

I have atached images of what your transform changes should look like in Orca.

I hope that helps!

Hi

Thanks a lot. It seems to work when deployed with Group Policies. :-)

Dan,

I work for a very large organization that needs to delpoy Camtasia Studio 8.0 via Microsoft Config Manager. I tried your suggestions above including the registry entries however they do not suppress the Check for Upgrades box when Camtasia Studio is started. I must suppress this message, as our user base is similar to Tommy's as he described above. I've attached a screenshot of the Check for Upgrades box.

Thanks

Jim

Does the Microsoft Config Manager produce a transform that is applied during deployment? if so, I could take a look at that to determine what mighht be going wrong.

Dan,

Thanks for the response... Its not the transform that is a problem.. I create a transform via Wise Package Studio.. It is that I do not seem to have to correct HKCU registry entries to suppress the Check for Upgrade message... I've tried what you've outlined above manually via regedit, as well as some other registry entries suggested to me by one of your tech support people. I'm able to disable updates from within the Camtasia application (I can get rid of the upgrade tab in Options)... However this box that I showed you pops up almost immediately after you start the application... It links to your website where a user could potentially download the latest full installer for Camtasia (which I don't want them to be aware of) - that's our job :O)

Thanks!

Jim

I looked into the code for this and it seems that the "CheckFoUpdateEnable" key only has an effect if a valid software key is present as well. Trial mode will always show the update dialog. Are you also setting the software key when you deploy?

Thanks Dan - That is our problem then.. I'm packaging in eval mode and the users are licensing on an individual basis.

Glad I could help! I'll have to investigate why it was implemented that way and perhaps get it changed in the future to support your scenario.

Dan,

I work for an organization and they use Camtasia Studio 8. I have installed software on a Windows 7 machine and updated license information.

Even after providing license, everytime I get an Check for Upgrade message prompt. It provides information that 8.0.4 is now available as a free upgrade.

As part of mass deployment, I need to ensure to suppress this upgrade message box. Tried with registry key CheckForUpdateEnable (type REG_DWORD) =0, but no luck. this message is prompted everytime I close and open the application. Users dont have admin rights to download and install the upgraded software, so need to suppress this

Please let me know, how can I suppress this message after applying license information

Phanendra and Vikas,
Sorry for the delay. We have a new deployment tool that has an interface for the installation options. It works with Snagit and Camtasia STudio. Can you download and see if it works for you?

Our support team can help you too: https://support.techsmith.com/home

Mike, This is not working for me either. I can install this application silently and suppress all the window boxes that comes during the launch except the "Check for Upgrade" pop-up box. I tried all the scenarios given above in this discussion forum but no luck.

When i install 8.0.3 version, it pops up to upgrade to 8.0.4 version and when i install 8.0.4, it pops up to upgrade to 8.0.1 version. Is there anyway to suppress this Upgrade box?

Please Help me if there is any solution from Camtasia.

Hi Mike,

I also used the new Deployment Tool you posted to create a new MST to no aval. After installing CS 8.0, the first time I run CS 8.0 a Upgrade window prompts to download CS v8.1.

I can't have this prompting my users to download and upgrade themselves. Please post a Reg punch that actually disables the upgrade please.

In Camtasia Studio v7, the "Check for Updates" dialog at launch appears to be controlled by the Tools -> Options "Upgrade Options tab" - "Enable automatic upgrade check" checkbox. This appears once every x-days.

However in v8, the above appears to have no effect on disabling this dialog which is a problem when deployed either via MSI or sequenced as AppV.

I believe this issue has been resolved in Camtasia Studio 8.1.2

Our (German) Camtasia Studio 8.1 hides its registry equivalent for the "Check for Upgrades" dialog in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\8.0\Camtasia Studio\8.0\AllowDateBasedCheck - setting this to "0" (DWORD!) stops Camtasia from bothering our students - many other (even by TechSmith) circulated registry keys for 8.0 do not seem to be supported in 8.1 anymore

Sorry, using 8.1.2, x86. I'm still getting the Update dialog appearing after every launch for an MSI installation, even with CheckForUpdateEnable set to 0 at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\8.0\Camtasia Studio\8
RunCount, though originally set to 1, is incremented every time Studio is launched.
It does this for both x64 and x32 versions of Win7
For x86, it is rightly using HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\8.0\Camtasia Studio\8 however I thought it would have been using HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wow6432Node\....
Under HKLM, it is utilising HKLM\Software\Wow6423Node.
I also have ShowRegisterOnlineDialog set to false under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\8.0

Anyways, I'm still having the issue, which is causing our AppV version to hang after selecting New Project after launch. On relaunch, it then indicates its trying to contact the validation server.
