Whenever the Camtasia editor starts (currently version 8, but earlier versions were the same) the web cam is switched on. This is regardless of whether the cam is selected in the Capture function or not. Is there any way that this can be configured not to occur so that the web cam is switched on ONLY when it is required?

Hi Paphian,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. I'd be happy to help you sort this out. When you say that the web cam is switched on, do you mean it's automatically selected in the Recorder (shown below)?

Or do you mean that Camtasia is recording the webcam and adding it to your project regardless of whether it's turned on the the Recorder.

Sincerely,

Cait Ryan

No - the Webcam on check box remains off and the (USB connected Microsoft LifeCam VX6000) web cam is not recorded, but the web cam itself is switched on as indicated by its activity light.

My concern is that this may potentially leave the cam open for viewing by others. I recall all too vividly experimenting with Windows Messenger some time ago and finding myself looking into my Brother's bedroom 2000 mile away, as his web cam had been inadvertently left active.

Other applications that may access the web cam do not activate it until it is called and this is preferred behaviour.

The cam activation relates to the Camtasia Studio editor rather than the screen capture function which works well.

When a screen capture is completed, you get the option to edit the capture you have just recorded. As the editor is loaded, the web cam becomes active. As the recording is finished, the use of the web cam is not required

If you start the editor without first running screen capture, then that also activates the web cam.

The only way to turn it off appears to be to select Camera Recording and thus display the cam's setup window then switch back to the Clip Bin.

If Camtasia Studio is closed without cancelling the web cam, the web cam remains active.

Hi Paphian,

I've spoken with our development team and confirmed that on start-up of the Camtasia Studio Editor, it does create a web cam control. However, this does not create a security risk due to the fact that Camtasia Studio is only programmed to record the webcam if selected and not to broadcast it, unlike an instant messaging system.

I'm unsure why the webcam remains activated after closing Camtasia Studio, and I have not been able to duplicate it. We would expect the camera light to turn off when the application is shut down, even if you were actively recording the camera. If you are interested, our Tech Support team would be happy to work with you to see if there is a setting specific to your set-up that can be changed. To submit a ticket with them, please visit http://techsmith.custhelp.com/app/uti.... If it's your first time contacting Tech. Support, you will need to create a free login with their system. They're typically able to respond to questions within one business day.

Thank you for posting!

Sincerely,

Cait Ryan

Another week and some more tests grabbing video from ITV Player (which the application does very well), but as soon as the Studio Editor is started the web cam lights up. Frankly I see no reason why it should do this until it is requested - and as I was not recording from the web cam or its microphone, it was not requested.

I took you at your word and left it illuminated (but covered) while I edited the material, and then having saved and closed out of the application the cam remained active. I had to access the cam software to close it.

If the cam activation light is lit, when your application is no longer running, your application can no longer be responsible for controlling any security issues that may be present.

The only application I use with the web cam is Skype and that does not find it necessary to start the cam until a video call (or video setup) is requested.

In future I will disconnect the web cam from the PC when using the product, but I would ask that you consult with your software engineers to see if the next update can be used to change when the cam is loaded to when it is required, to avoid this issue.

Hi Paphian,

As I mentioned, it's not expected behavior for the camera to remain activated after you quit Camtasia Studio. Would you be willing to submit a ticket with our Tech Support team? They would be able to work 1:1 with you to try to determine why Camtasia Studio is interacting with your Webcam in an unexpected manner. To do this, please visit http://techsmith.custhelp.com/app/uti.... If it's your first time contacting Tech. Support, you will need to create a free login with their system. They're typically able to respond to questions within one business day.

Thanks,
