Can users with "Viewer" role in TechSmith Relay download videos?

We have a large body of student users on our campus that view videos created by their instructors in TechSmith relay. A student contacted me recently and wanted to know if there was a way for her to download the video to her laptop so that she could watch it later (while on a plane with no internet connection). I directed her to look in the bottom-right corner just below the video playbar to see if there was an icon for a down arrow. I see it on my screen (but I'm an admin) - but they could not see it on theirs.   Is there a special setting that needs to be set in order for a video to be downloadable by users that are under the role "Viewer"?  Or is it just Administrators and Creators that can do this?  I've looked and can't seem to find anything!  Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi there.

What you're seeing is as designed. However, most browsers will allow you to download the video simply by starting video playback and then right clicking on the video. This should bring up an option to "Save video as..." or something similar, depending on the browser.

I do have to point out though that if your student downloads the video and watches it offline:

1. Any quiz that the creator may have added to the video will not display. (That's part of the web page, not the video itself.)
2. There will be no record of how much of the video your student watched. (It will show that she started the video, though.)

Depending on how your instructors are utilizing those features, you can see that it may cause a problem.

Hope that helps!

John, thank you so much!  That is exactly the response I was looking for!  I could swear that we'd had viewers downloading videos before - but I couldn't remember how we'd done it. And I will make sure to pass that information along to the viewer and the instructor about the quiz and analytic data not being captured if the video is downloaded.  =)

Thank you so much for your quick response!
