If your media has been imported into the clip bin.

Left click and Drag will do it.
You can also right click on your media and select>>> Add to timeline at Playhead.

If trying to make room in the middle of your timeline clips to import a clip on the same track, it would be necessary to highlight all the clips to the right (holding down Shift while clicking on each) and then they will drag over together. The click elsewhere once to release the selection highlight.

yes the media is imported to the clip bin but nothing seems to work  - when I right click and add to timeline at playhead it does insert it but over writes what is already there it does not shift the content to the right - left click and drag just moves the needles like it's playing the video

Something's amiss; it usually refuses to place a clip where another one already exists. I've never seen it "overwrite" anything as described. Save your project, close Camtasia and re-open the project to see if behavior improves.

The procedure for inserting media into the center of a project is a fairly easy operation. I didn't understand your question the first time around.

First you position the playhead exactly where you want to add the new media. You need to drag all the media far enough to the right to accommodate the new clip, image, etc.

It's easier to just drag the media into the timeline in this situation.

To move the media further then the timeline allows. As an example, far enough to accommodate a long video clip.
You may need to adjust timeline zooming.

I've opened and closed camtasia and tried it again. When I position the timeline slider to where I want to insert the media and hold down the shift key it does nothing except play what's in the timeline..... it does not move anything....are there any known bugs?

Hi Denise,
There are no known bugs for the behavior you are describing.
Your clips on the timeline should never be overwritten with other clips you are dropping on the timeline.
And, as Joe mentioned, moving your clips on the timeline is pretty straightforward functionality.

Can you make a recording of your timeline and this behavior so we can see what is going on? I think that will be the best approach to giving you some help.

Thanks,
Kelly

honestly there is nothing to record.....when I place the cursor over the play head and I hold down the shift key to drag the tracks as shown above in 1 and 2 red call outs .... it just plays the recording as if the shift key is not being held down.....

try this ...

with playhead where you want to insert more media, put the new media on an empty top track, make a timeline selection that is the same as the new media duration, right click the selection, execute "insert time", pull the new media over and down into the gap that was created

Also, here is a video of expected behavior so you can see what the timeline should look like:

That's odd behavior Denise.
Normally, when you hit the space bar playback begins.
Maybe something has Hi-Jacked your shift key somehow? But I'm guessing here.
