Can't update snagit 2018 on mac

On a macAir, with macOS 10.13.3, the attempt to update Snagit 2018.0.1 receives this error:

"Snagit can’t be updated when it’s running from a read-only volume like a disk image or an optical drive. Move Snagit to your Applications folder, relaunch it from there, and try again."

However, Snagit *is* being launched from the applications folder. (To be sure, I closed it down and re-launched from there.)

Note:
PC is my normal vehicle, so "pilot error" is a definitely a possibility, when flying Apple.

Hello Eric;

Are you running Time Machine backup? On rare occasion it can make duplicates of applications/shortcuts and redirects them to the backup location which can cause this issue. Also, have you opened a support ticket yet?

I did open a ticket. Thanks. But I'm getting good info here, too!

Another possibility: Since you sound like you might be a newbie on Macs, there are two Application folders. One is on the System level; the other is under Users > YourName. Snagit must be in the System level Applications folder. I only mention this because I've seen newbies do this.

Yow. I had no idea. I open Finder, and there is an applications folder on the left. How do I figure out which it is?? (big thanks, btw. Ignorance kills...)

Many thanks for the helpful explanation! I can now confirm that SnagIt is in the correct Applications folder. (So reason, Google apps show up in the user Applications folder. Nothing else does.)

The helpful folks at support gave me a lengthy process for deleting everything, rebooting, and reinstalling. That's next...

thanks again.
