Can't use Start or Taskbar shortcuts to SnagIt or SnagIt Editor

I'm using Snagit v13.1.2 (32 Bit) Build 7933.

I had shortcuts to both the Snagit program and the Snagit Editor on Start. Now when I click either of these, it tries (and fails) to reinstall Snagit. I've removed and re-added the shortcuts to no avail. Same problem with shortcuts on the Taskbar.

Print Screen is my hotkey to start Snagit and this is still working. If I navigate to Program Files (x86) and double-click SnagitEditor.exe, it works. Also fine is clicking the "Open Editor" link while in Snagit. Interestingly, a shortcut on my desktop works fine. It just seems to be shortcuts on Start and Taskbar that both have become allergic to.

I installed Windows updates today - could this be it? It's a telling point that I haven't yet run these updates on my laptop and these shortcuts are still working correctly.

It's not a huge drama, just annoying.

Curiouser and curiouser ... I take the shortcut I've created on my desktop and put it on my Taskbar - it works. I put that same shortcut on Start - it fails.

I have had this behavior with other programs and it seems to be related to Windows 10
tweaking.com has an excellent repair utility to help fix Windows issues (It will run the Dism.exe commands an a bunch more
You might try safe mode and see if they work there (even if the program can't load, it shows that the shortcut tried to invoke it)

First though, delete all the snagit icons, reboot, and then go to the program folder and recreate them from the program folder
Short story ... that is probably a WIndows 10 issues and the Microsoft answer is to reinstall windows

Yeah I agree.Rick Grunwald
Deleting the  shortcuts and creating new ones from the program folder is the reasonable solution.

SnagIt 13 updates have been notorious for updating into my SnagIt 12 & 13 folder and changing my SnagIt 13 Icons to 12 styled Icons.

I've gotten to the point where I expect a SnagIt 13 upgrade to Break Version 12.

It's actually easier to uninstall SnagIt 12 first. Then reinstall it after 13 is updated.

That's the easiest. I would shut down the computer and drain the energy before rebooting and making the icons to make sure their are no caching issues.
Your issue with version 12 and 13. Wisecare has a folder hiding utility. I wonder if that would make the  folder invisible to the installer that is crashing your snagit install. Just a thought

Interesting thought.I used to keep SnagIt7,8, 9,10,11 and 12 installed. Then 12 updates started interfering with 10's functionality.
To be honest I think it could be a TechSmith poison pill. There was a lot of forum advise being passed around back then.It was about running more than one version of SnagIt. People really hated SnagIt 12, the dark UI, the loss of text capture and a number of other things. SnagIt updates have been breaking previous versions ever since. "Jaws background music playing"
I've even reformatted my HD and reinstalled Win 10 within the last 30 days. It  recurred with this last update. April 18
It could be a new licensing protection attempt as well.

Joe, I hope you are wrong as that sort of dirty dealing is usually the sign of a company out of ideas and trying to consolidate profits. It actually sounds EXACTLY what Miscro$oft is doing with windows 10

Agreed, everytime I have to deal with Windows 10 (or Office 2016, for that matter), I tear my hair for these same very reasons: Menus have been changed for no justifiable reason, feature names have been changed for no justifiable or apparent reason, screen layout has been changed. Just like what many people have been complaining here for months.

Techsmith I feel must be having lunch with Microsoft to much and decided to do things the Microsoft way. Turn it upside down and all around a say "That's the way people want it"

Thanks for all the replies.

Rick and Joe, I've already tried deleting the shortcuts and re-doing them. I tried this both from right-clicking the exe files, and (in the case of the Taskbar) by starting the apps from Program Files and pinning the resulting Taskbar icon. I must admit I hadn't thought of switching off my computer between deleting the old shortcuts and creating the new ones.

There was a suggestion that it may have happened because of multiple versions of Snagit being installed. Nope, this version is the only one.

Since my hotkey still kicks off the main app, and I've managed to put the editor in my Taskbar by placing an existing shortcut there, I'm going to call it quits.

Thanks again for all the help. :-)

You said you just did a Win 10 update?

If yes than I would do a roll back myself.

I know the creators update caused a lot of problems.

If stuff  ie; your shortcuts .. work, than You know it was the update and to wait a bit for a fix update.

The creators update has caused a lot of problems.

However, in my case it didn't break any of my shortcuts.
It did corrupt my graphics card software.
